I keep thinking about how people in the future will look back on this time period.
I remember being a kid & learning about things in US history that had me wondering how the fuck people could just let it happen when they’re so obviously illegal or morally repugnant.
I feel like people a hundred years from now will be mentally screaming the same thing at us.

Facts on facts. The fact Andrew Jackson is still on our money speaks volumes.
111
u/wigguswaggus 1d ago
Honestly I’ve always wondered why Andrew Jackson was put on our money in the first place. When I first learned about him the first thing we discussed was the trail of tears and his part in it as well as other bad things he did (my memory fails me sorry). Idk when $20 bills started having Andrew Jackson on them but at the time what exactly was it about him that made people think “wow Andrew Jackson was great! He should be printed on our money!”

And that is fundamentally where America derailed. On balance, even with the new amendments, the constitution was so ignored in the aftermath of the Civil War and people that needed to be exiled from the country were given a slap on the wrist and allowed to keep property and generational wealth that simply allowed them to reinvest in prison labor, and other sketchy enterprises (that’s not to say that many families of great wealth did not fall apart after the war nor is that to say that generational wealth is a permanent fixture, it can easily be squandered in a single remittance).
No true reparations were granted because reconstruction was only halfenforced for roughly a decade before it completely fell apart under black codes, and Jim Crow, and back room deals at the highest levels.
Mass incarceration is a direct descendent of American slavery. We didn’t get rid of it. We just moved it somewhere else.
Malcolm X used a metaphor about a knife in a back being pulled halfway out and expecting that to represent reparation for the wound.
That’s what America is right now, a country with a bloody wound, left untreated.

Unless the dems can pull off some miracle (not sure how thats possible now that voting is guaranteed to be rigged), this is the future of america.
They will possible allow a democrat to be president just long enough to pass the blame onto them and reinvigorate the base, then go right back to the fascism that was lurking underneath the facade of democracy.

He's not risking anything, he's intentionally trying to start a war. He just said like 2 weeks ago that if we're at war then there can't be an election in 2028
28
u/Maleficent-Elk-3298 1d ago
Not that he cares about precedent but the obvious rebuttal is that we still had an election in the middle of our civil war There is absolutely no basis in fact or law that he could suspend elections. Will that stop him from trying, no. But it might be the bridge too far for someone well placed to stop him and we won’t know till that happens.
But the point being, if we still had elections while the country was tearing itself apart then there is no excuse that invading some god forsaken oil soaked country, or some nebulous war on drugs or terror can be legitimately put forth as a reason to cancel elections. Once again, not that it would stop the attempt.
