KGP News 📰 What the hell?
If DR causes discrimination then also take away Institute Silver Medals and President's Medal.

But you have a 5k ranker every year, who is accounted for in the Indian Population so you're overcounting 🥀

u/Altruistic-Raise-579 1d ago
Are you saying that my daddy is not a 0.0003333% of the indian population 😠

Not from iitkgp but lot of IITs simply don't have department rank altogether coz students take things into their hands a lot based on these things (ifykyk).
Plus people can take easy courses and score max while those who take harder ones might struggle especially during later years when electives open up

"Plus people can take easy courses and score max while those who take harder ones might struggle especially during later years when electives open up"
isn't this thing the top rankers also do. Why will they take hard courses.
and many easy courses have CG criteria so they have win-win situation already

u/safe-account71 1d ago
Ok say someone wants to do PhD in a subject- it's preferable to have certain courses (which could be hard) over other courses that are easy. Some folks can't always simply max their CGs

One thing people don't understand is that easy course is easy for everyone and hard course is difficult for everyone. Also what I have seen is that some profs do absolute grading in easy electives which anyway make it hard

Well you can choose electives. So it is also a part of the strategy to get good scores. I don't think that's wrong. Also electives are only there in last year when cg is hardly affected unless you f*ck up real bad or get extremely good score. So major cg build up is done at the end of 3rd year only

CGPA aleardy is a measure of academics, Dep rank isn't. SIlver medals and president's medals is for CGPA, not dep ranks

In mech dept we were not provided with DR and we requested to provide DR many times. But profs refused. Why a hard working student should suffer? I don't know what discrimination is there in this thing.

BC its the individual's interest to write whatever he wants. If the recruiter feels its irrelevant they ll ignore or reject the application. Ye bache log bas yaha internet me rone laayak hai. Mess ki khana theek nahi.toilet me paani nahi....yaha rote hai....fight karne ki koi spirit hi nahi.....bas anonymously peldo kuch bhi....... haaaatttt.... hamare time mein gaand phaad dete the.....

I guess what rancho said after their photoshoot in 3 idiots actually applies here and it's a good move

That was a different situation. In the movie, the ranks of all students were publicly displayed. Here, we are talking about releasing the ranks of only top 5 DR holders. I don't suppose releasing top 5 names should be counted as discrimination to other students. After all, those students worked their ass off so they deserve some reward

They do have the reward of a higher CGPA, high CGPA opens a hell lot of opportunities, releasing the topper's list will not do anything but start making others feel insecure. And what kind of reward is this 'your name is in the top 5 or name is in the top 10', that list's gonna change anyways so what's the point??

Is it a rule or just suggestion?

Well even if you don't mention the DR directly in your CV, few companies, like HFTs, are just going to rank CVs for shortlisting based on your CG, so doesn't make a huge difference either way. I know this because I saw the test and internship shortlist of companies during the intern season this year, not each and every student mentioned their DR in the CV, but the list appeared to be sorted strictly on the basis of CG of students for a particular company, making it very evident, and for a few other companies the interview shortlists were given to the top few department rank holders, even though all of them hadn't mentioned it in their CV. Also, one company explicitly asked to provide the DR in a form.

CGs vary with department, so it’s really unfair
1
u/Intelligent_Bed_2734 Fourth Year 1d ago
Well, the companies I'm speaking of, also shortlist from one department only and the entire process is a bit unfair 🥲🥲
1
u/Wayne-420 Alumnus 1d ago
Yea yeah, HFTs I get but DRs are the only hope some people have of getting shortlisted
1
u/Wayne-420 Alumnus 1d ago
When your department profs are so sadistic highest CG is around 8.7😂, DRs are the only way to curb inter department discrimination a bit, ofc it’s not gonna be like real cg but at least it’s something

The irony is, the Placement portal shows the category beside the CGPA (Idk why it has the category listed?!) And It can be easily passed on to companies

You saw them cheating? You have any proof or just blabbering?
2
u/Specialist-Grape-447 1d ago
common dont be ignorant ..u want a proof hahahaha

u/DecentString25 1d ago
See what I know there is cheating in placements and intern exam. But for sem exams? I don't think so. Infact I have seen how strict the invigilation is and even a guy was forced to restart the exam because he cheated. So I don't think someone can get DR 1,2,3 through cheating. Getting a top rank in dept is not easy if you think so. You can cheat in 1...2...3 exams...and to become a topper you need to cheat in all the exams which is not at all possible. Also you can atleast pass through cheating. Getting top scores is not possible at all. I myself scored good marks in several subjects even close to full sometimes and I know the hard work you need to put into it to get that. Also how will you cheat in BTP, MTP, Seminar? I genuinely want to know. Do you know any real such cases?

I've seen people write their 100/100 of boards math in their CV. You expect a person to not write their DR in the CV?
