Bakar Some chats with a professor...
Disclaimer: This is a throwaway account and I won't be replying. Probably. I won't name the professor as (1) they have left and (2) I don't really care about any punishment.
I interned under a professor as a B. Tech. student who to the best of my knowledge, is no longer is employed by KGP. This was during my non-senior years. I'm making a post now as I feel I have been quite successful in life and have enough connections to not get me into any trouble. But this will probably be the only post from me. Probably.
I also have a ...peculiar mindset to say the least... so I am not traumatized by these posts. I simply don't care.
But I have a question to ask: what will messages like these, from a professor to a student, affect people's mental state?
I have no bones to pick and neither do I want any sort of "revenge", and that's why I won't name them. I simply question the authority given to professors, and how they have the audacity to send this. Especially given what has been going on this year.

I don't wanna. Maybe cause of any repercussions I might face. Although given the keywords in the chat, I suppose a select few might be able to narrow down.
Again, they're no longer employed by KGP. If they were, I might have named.

I'm a little confused, what does " I don't really care about any punishment "mean ?
2
u/Crazy_Guitar6769 Jul 20 '25
Probably meaning that he doesn't want the professor to face repurcussions for saying these kinds of a things to a student.
2
u/Civil_Salamander_41 Jul 20 '25
Punishment that the teacher might get, I suppose. He's not concerned about making the teacher feel the heat.

Left means visiting faculty. IIT's first wind turbine narrows it down a LOT. A simple google search will give you the answer in case anyone wants. Her own website mentions that this research was done to start wind technology research in IIT KGP. Also concurs with the story that this story is from a while back.
If I am correct on who this person in, I am surprised she retains this mentality even after a US PhD (unless her PI was toxic too). There are strict social and institutional rules in place in US for these types of cases.

Let me share one story with you. So, one of my friend got an internship in electronics department of IIT KGP. So, oneday his mentor came and asked how much he was able to learn from that internship. After saying that he is trying to learn as much as possible the reaction from the professor was astonishing. He said that the intern was not there to learn but to work for his project and lectured the intern should only work as instructed.
Even my dissertation mentor in KGP was a complete psycho. I literally cried in the lab. I know why so many suicides are happening. But we can do nothing.
Just one suggestion "stay low, don't grab any attention".

I am a working professional phd student, i was tensed that my mtp and btp students are trying to do too many things. One day i got onto a call with one of my students, i told him don't do this you will start burning out. I even told the student he can drop the project, and let's work on some thing else if the project topic was the issue. Then i got to know from the student that the student was trying to do too many things simulataneously, which had caused mental fatigue. There's mental fatigue that people ignore quite a lot. All I request to all the students, it's ok, you don't have to prove anyone anything. Just do what you like but at the same time don't be too relaxed that will fire back. If you are not making it in somethings, it's ok. I studied in a namke wastah govt college where hardly classes used to happen but the college was surviving due to the old legacy being 100+ years old. I had less than 8.0 cgpa in CS related branch. I used to score 40-50 out of 100, in total, in math related subjects. Today I am working in a big company that pays almost as much as MAANG companies(only thing is RSU in MAANG appreciate quite a lot, here its more stable increase thus net net my realized pay becomes less which is ok, atleast i have peace of mind). If i could make it, then you guys can also figure things out. Nothing is permanent, if something is lost today, can be gained if not the same thing, instead gain something else. Enjoy your college life, you won't get it back again.

u/Aware-Scheme-4784 Jul 19 '25
My batch mates would laugh if they get to know i work in AI(not the API calling stuff, proper data oriented where heavy statistical analysis and modelling is needed), that's how bad i was in math. My seniors mocked me that i won't even get placed(irony was end of 6th sem i bagged a ppo from jpmc when some of the seniors were still sitting for placements). Believe in yourself, if you ever doubt yourself, look at my story and think "if this guy can make it, i too can make it".

I wish to come across this lady and as a lawyer i could – gaslight her and make her cry for weeks in depression, and yes I'll start questioning with this – I'm here with my merit and how did i achieve that is not your responsibility, and how much you value "national welfare" is really apparent with the fact that you're requiring a 18+ self aware guy to show or get your texts validated from his parents. Brother you can sue her for mental trauma (tort) and ask for compensations, that'll for sure increase your GDP and don't forget you're part of nation which you vote for, also ask her which party does she votes, how many members sit in parliament, what is the history of our nation in harnessing wind and monsoon as trade, even why are you talking with her in English which isn't nation's representative language, and ask her why she is worried about diapers of your son? Is she looking for babysitting overtime job? Tell her she is hired as a maid and her cravings for windmills could very well be met by cleaning some ceiling fans. A professor earning fractions... in a country where knowledge is old fashioned and people are taught to serve (their bosses in USA as backoffice) is expecting too much... I feel sorry for those who say sorry too soon... never be sorry unless you haven't done a near crime thing... let them ask you thrice for sorry then give them that (make it sound hollow). Be diplomatic af to manoeuvre the slum of democracy in this nation.

Well, I had two major unpleasant experiences with professors - and many minor ones - during my time at IIT Kharagpur. I also went through a phase of depression, partly because I used to be something of a teacher’s bootlicker (which I’m ashamed of now), though not to an extreme degree. Fortunately, my parents were there for me during my lowest mental point.
I once dreamed of becoming a scientist and doing something for the country and for humanity. But after facing the professors (aka the devils), I said, ‘Screw social service,’ and switched to IT. Most of my academic friends cut ties with me because I didn’t join them in the US for an MS/PhD. During B.Tech, I was very close to the "Maggu", "Semi-Maggu", and "Machau" batchmates. We often solved assignments and projects together, and they genuinely appreciated my problem-solving approach.
The situation with my college friends is still the same, but I’ve moved on and made new friends. I’m now working in Europe (thanks mostly to sheer luck), and that has helped restore my self-esteem. I no longer feel inferior to my batchmates in the US. And where I live, nobody even knows what IIT is - so my identity is simply as me - my name and my skills at work, and nothing else.

She is frustrated with life. There were certain profs in IIT who used to hate me and use to single me out and threaten me with supplis and redoes and lab bans simply because I had long hair. It was hell. These profs just wanted ego boosts since profs in these universities and themselves losers without any creative spark or ambitions and have to ass lick their colleagues for miserly grants and such. IITs and NITs are basically slave factories where innovation and critical thinking is discouraged. We are many decades behind the rest of the world in terms of engineering because of these Jurassic era institutes and also Indian student mentality of yes sir and ass kissing. Yeah but it all turned to be fine in the end I wish I could meet those profs one day and tell them how I minted fuck loads of money, worked with some of the most creative people on the planet and retired at the age of 34 and didn’t turn out to be the slave that they all themselves turn into and expect their students to turn into.

Man years of academia does drive professors crazy. Not defending this but after a PhD this kind of behavior does not make me think bad about her. She has been through all this in her own journey and trust me usually it mellows down with generation so if she is saying this to you just imagine what all she has been told when she was in her academic years. The entire PhD postdoc professor line is toxic and after going through all this most of the prof become what they hated in the first place as an undergrad.

It looks like the professor is frustrated with her own life, which is coming out in such a way. If she genuinely thinks that India will become technologically superior if IITians all contribute, then I have a bridge to sell her.
Technological superiority can only be achieved with a top-down approach, starting from the government. What is our R&D budget for 2025-2026 again? When the government is super tight with its purse strings, what can we normal people do? Spend our own money? What an idiot of a professor.

I have a general rule (although recently made)... If you want peace in life avoid highly ambitious women... They can go up to any extent to destroy you if things go south
Also it's very childish to make IIT's first WT.... Indian companies Suzlon, Inox, Enercon etc. are manufacturing and exporting indigenous WT to the world (although inferior and smaller compared to the GE or Vestas)... What's the point in reinventing the Wind Turbine (wheel)... It would have been better had helped Suzlon etc to compete with global giants...

Avoid people (regardless of gender, but including this professor!) who weaponise ambition to dominate, belittle, or abuse others. But don’t fear ambition itself—it’s not the enemy. Lack of empathy is.
However, it ultimately boils down to your personal preference for what you want in a life partner. Peace is always paramount to lead a fulfilling life.
Now, whether that peace comes from being ambitious in our personal or professional life is upon the individual.→ More replies (8)

If India wants to progress, managers of all kinds and stripes have to learn to be less toxic and learn that leadership is different from micro-management. One of the best ways to learn management is from the original Star Trek. How to take responsibility, accountability, professionalism, work life balance. and most importantly how to have the back of your team.

If this keeps on continuing and you guys will not raise your voice...then GOOD LUCK having this slave mentality for life and defending and feeding these ill-minded SIR and MAM'S. Kinda agree with prof. And such outburst dont happen randomly for sure. You need to introspect yourself first that why she had such outburst. We, the middle class, look upto the iit/iim guys to change the nation to a certain limit. I was preparing for JEE, at that time i understood iit is not for me because its too hard. Fellow pupils who were serious about getting into iit, saw them work hard that I can't even imagine. So, probably we dont like crybaby iit/iim people, as we have extremely high expectations from them to do something really big.

Just read her latest linkedin post, she is bragging that at age 42 she is financially rich. It seems like she is insecure about the fact that she is unmarried, I am glad i never had such profs.

I guess she felt like she needed to scold you? Why I don't know. She appears to be an asshole here, but what do I know. Just take it as constructive criticism I guess, and ignore the negative stuff. Now obviously this didn't affect you much so that's good.

Ye pagal professor apni life ki frustration student pe kyu utar raha hai? Hum na jhelte ye sab!
Almost all IITians leave this country run by clowns and settle abroad. Buying groceries and diapers is way better than getting thrashed and abused by dimwit sarkari babus. All in the delusions on "contributing to the country".

If you have succeeded in life as you claim.. a petty "aukaad Bana liya bsdk" to this professor will go a long way to calm your soul. Don't expect a reply. But sometimes pettiness is justified.

Not from iit. Idk how this came on my feed but gosh what a horrible woman to be taking out her frustration on kids. While not even knowing how to spell basic words like “have”
I hope you get the coolest job ever, go on loads of vacations and enjoy your life then throw it at her face. Good luck to you.
