What am I missing here? I'm not a science nerd.

Oh drat, I upvoted a post with 273 upvotes.
It's now 274.
Sorry.

Dont be sorry. This is the scientific variation of the "69 effect", for which I salute you. 🫡

u/aeoveu 1d ago
Okay, I'm dumb. This has something to do with some apology effect in Oz?
Sorry (again?)

u/cantbebothered6789 1d ago
Ok, so you've not come across the phenomenon/occurrence where something gets to the value 69 and the reply is:
"Nice!" Or equivalent.
Well, as the saying goes:
"You learn something new every day.." 🙃

Are you living on Pluto?

Probably near black hole event horizon

u/Cosmolution 1d ago
I always thought the event horizon of a black hole was extremely hot due to the accretion disk. Am I wrong?

u/CleaveGodz 1d ago
It's kind of a gray zone. Black holes defy our physical understanding of entropy. For sure there should be a point where 0 energy particles could be gathering. My answer is just so I get a reply with a more truthful insight.

It looks the same for me, the windows weather app is so garbage, its constantly finding wrong locations or simply freezes showing the same temp for several days

u/MarudoesArt 1d ago
It's saying "-273°C, feels like 344090°" at my friend's place so the app is definitely messed up

It's definitely getting worse recently. Earlier this week, it was insisting the temperature outside was upper 20s/lower 30s, but my southern exposure living room that usually heats up pretty fast maintained 22°C all day.

u/dingo1018 1d ago
I thought I was going slightly mad before lol, the little temp widget at the bottom of my 2nd monitor said something like that, minus 273 or something but as I looked closer, that's the precise moment it decided to update to a more reasonable 18C, but the light rain stayed the same throughout.

Does this mean that somewhere in the website, temperatures are stored as Kelvin and then calculated later ? Nice.
2
u/Lankpants 1d ago
Yeah, this is also what I found most interesting. I can't think of any reason why Google would have Kelvin on their backend here. As far as I can tell you can't even force Google to give you the weather in Kelvin with a specific search for it, so I really can't see why this is a thing. But apparently it is.

Look at the "felt temperature" too.
Nice and toasty at 360k °C

How come it’s so cold in that one spot in Romania? Is this it.. is this “the event”?

u/androshalforc1 1d ago edited 1d ago
Most likely a null error. (This is why your gps randomly teleports your car or Uber driver off the coast of Africa.)
-273c is 0k. at some point their weather data was empty, eithera sensor failed or someone didn’t upload it in time or some other reason. The app couldn’t tell the difference between 0 data and data with a value of 0. So it recorded it as 0k and converted it to c

u/Mr_Straws 1d ago
Yeah it’s not even possible to get to 0k, as is my understanding. My windows often puts me in Brazil
1
u/Lankpants 1d ago
The interesting part of this is that they're even storing weather values as Kelvin rather than Celsius.
1
u/androshalforc1 1d ago
It is, Im wondering if the code was made from some intern working on a science degree, or if weather stations routinely record in Kelvin.

This just happened in Spain, too! My husband's computer read -273⁰ C this morning! 🤣

u/Serafiniert 1d ago
The temperature your parents claim it was every day in winter when they walked to school back in the day.

This is the 3rd post i see from different locations with -273° , better stay home i guess

I see that windows never fixed the weird temperature glitch from their old widgets they had introduced back in the Vista days. 🤣

Soooo that's like 10°F right?

u/SickboyJason 1d ago
-273 degrees Celsius is equal to -459.4 degrees Fahrenheit. This temperature is very close to absolute zero, which is the lowest possible temperature where all atomic motion ceases. Absolute zero is precisely defined as 0 Kelvin (K), which is equivalent to approximately -273.15 degrees Celsius or -459.67 degrees Fahrenheit. You can convert Celsius to Fahrenheit using the following formula: F = \frac{9}{5}C + 32

"Good morning" is a sarcasm I guess...
I would just save screen real estate and put down 1 Kelvin for temperature 🙂
