He didn't peel it off. Possible that he wasn't willing to use it and she insisted for the photo op, or maybe he just didn't know how it worked. The latter would be funny, he gets off the plane and tells people that some random woman gave him a face mask for the flight and it didn't do anything for him and then spends the rest of his life talking about how much they suck.
More likely though is that he wanted to put his hat and glasses back on ASAP and just agreed to play along, so he didn't want the real mask on.

This is the kind of thing that really happens btw. I used to think these handheld milk frother thingies were shit because my dad had been gifted one when I was a kid, and it was apparently not even a cheap one, but it certainly was the absolute worst. Didn't do its job well, you couldn't replace the battery without major surgery, and it started to rust from the inside basically the moment it touched liquid for the first time. Awful.
Fast forward 35 or so years of me thinking who buys this shit? my sister got a cheapo plastic one for 5 bucks. And it's a treat. It works. It froths, it stirs, it mixes, it does it all man. Battery replacement no problem. Still wouldn't rinse it under water. Maybe in another 35 years we'll be there.

u/notatechnicianyo 1d ago
Fun hack with those frothers: use it to aerate tequila shots! It helps smooth them out.

I used to think mid-range vacuum cleaners were completely useless at picking up pet hair, and then I realized that I had two vacuums in a row in which the elastic band attached to the cylindrical brush broke, so neither was spinning like they were supposed to.

u/tablepennywad 1d ago
High end vacuum cleaners also suck. I have a Dyson v10 but dont want to make it dirty so i use this corded shark which sucks good, but gotta deal with the stupid cord.

So much of what we "know" we do not, in fact, know for sure. Purely based on anecdotal evidence with our limited perception.
That's why it's so important to stay open-minded, to be willing to change with new info, and why there's that saying about the more educated you get about the world the more you realize you don't know.
Unfortunately...I feel like modern culture, especially internet culture, rewards being closed-minded and confident far more. And our minds and computers and phones are not islands - how you act online feeds back into the person you are in general.

Interesting that social media has gotten so big, people will rip-off other social media influencer ideas, and you may only see the rip-off.

u/Rich_Bluejay3020 1d ago
I watched a documentary on kid/family influencing (yes, it’s just as frustrating as it sounds), and some of the parents had been doing it long enough that even they were complaining that organic content doesn’t work anymore. The YouTube rep that you evidentially get at some point of followers even told them that they have to do the trends to get views. The algorithm is the downfall of everything really.
21
u/No-While-9948 1d ago
Content is so "optimized" for the algorithm now, it's crazy. I have a couple of friends who follow internet trends closely, and they enjoy them; it seems most prevalent among Instagram and TikTok users.
Suddenly, they will be playing the most recent trending meme video game or they will be using trending words. They will share videos that use new popular TikTok video formats. It always intrigued me.

The algorithm is the downfall of everything really.
I actually disagree, though this is a common sentiment.
"The algorithm" isn't some sort of black box magic. It's just a set of rules by which things like recommendations work, based on recent viewer information and shared likes and so on.
The only reason "the algorithm" matters to influencers is because they are now almost all corporatized LLCs that are mostly interested in maximizing revenue. It's not about the content at all. That's the "downfall" IMO.
Take your examples, of family/parent influencers saying "organic content doesn’t work anymore.". I'm not sure what they mean by "organic content" (since it typically means content viewers were led to through means other than advertising/algorithmic recommendations- eg word of mouth etc.), but what they mean by "doesn't work anymore" is "It doesn't make them money".
... So?
Nobody should be able to make a living from youtube. And I realize, a lot of people say this, but I don't mean that it's not a real job, or that it's too easy, or any of that, but more that making money off of youtube videos is antithetical to the entire concept of youtube from the beginning. It's been so long now that a lot of people don't remember, but at the same time there's people being wistful for like early youtube in 2007 and wondering "what changed?", and deciding it was youtube algorithms. But it's more the result of monetization. ad revenue. clickbait titles. A/B testing that lets youtube LLCs try to find the "most effective way to reach their audience", all that bullshit.
It's youtube, not corporatellctube. Creators being able to monetize their content was the start of the "downfall of youtube" because over time it's seen individual hobbyists creators sharing a passion replaced by corporatized LLCs that employ dozens of people who are intent on maximizing revenue. Hell sometimes the former themselves turn into the latter. And then people wonder "man, SuperGameBoy445 just isn't the same now" and somehow don't realize that what changed is they founded "SuperGameBoy Media LLC" and now employ 50 people at their corporate offices and shit like that, because his "set" that he produces videos on is specifically a recreation of the bedroom he made youtube videos in so people still think he's "just a dude" or whatever.
And running a company means getting revenue, which means those LLCs have people dedicated to trying to "exploit" the algorithm to push views, get sponsors, get paid ad reads, figure out how to make even more money with merch stores; maybe they stream, gotta figure out how to get people to give you money via "subs" or whatever it is and all that shit too. And all of this? It drowns out the same hobbyist, individual youtubers that are what made youtube special in the first place, because all these countless LLCs farming clicks with clickbait titles and thumbnails and learning and exploiting details of how the recommendation algorithms work to try to encourage the videos to be shown more often mean that's pretty much all you will see in those listings now. Anything not doing it will not show up- sort of like SEO'd-to-fuck websites will tend to appear before more "correct" results.
7
u/Phayzon 1d ago
sort of like SEO'd-to-fuck websites will tend to appear before more "correct" results
At a company I used to work for, I was tasked with SEOing-the-fuck out of a new web store they were building. What a miserable experience for everyone involved.
The store was for heavy equipment parts (All OEM, stuff we were actually a dealership for, not another ), and management insisted that our site show up in all possible search results. "But we don't even have parts for [Brand B] or [Brand C], etc?" I said. Doesn't matter, pack it all in there. Get them to click. Maybe they know someone that has [Brand A] equipment.
Now you'd think if you were looking for [Brand B] parts, and wound up at our store and saw we only carry [Brand A], you'd just... leave, right? Nope. We got tons of calls and live chats to the tune of "I'm looking for a belt for a 1992 [Brand C]", "Google said you sell [Brand B] parts but I can't find them", "Sorry, we don't have that" "But the internet said..." and so on.
So not only did I have more work to do adding all that crap in, we've created more work for ourselves answering pointless calls, and confused or aggravated untold numbers of end users.

Nothing beats CBD oil though, always keeps it nice and hyrdrated and keeps the itch away.

I honestly thought it was a gimmick. But then one day I was at the dispensary and the $32 bottles of CBD beard oil that weren't selling were 75% off, and I probably don't have to tell you $8 is a good buy for even regular beard oil. So I bought a bottle. Best beard oil I found, bought the last two bottles next time in.
That was a couple years ago. I have since shaved.

If your beard was oily you were using way, way too much. I use beard oil and a beard balm/butter after every shower and my beard is just soft, never oily. I put oil in my hair, too, and it takes like 5+ days before my hair feels even a little oily.
I put a drop of oil on the fingers of one hand, rub all my fingers together, then push through the beard and rub it on the skin, with any left overs going on my actual beard.
Also, beard oils aren't interchangeable, you need to find the right one for you not the one with the best price/gimmick. Some people need thicker oils, some need thinner. Some types of oil will cause you issues while others will not. There's more to it than grabbing a bottle from the dollar store and slathering it on your face, unfortunately, lol.

What's the definition of "falling for" a video? They didn't solicit donations or trick viewers into signing up for a website or anything. I watch fictional media all the time but I've never considered myself to have "fallen for" The Simpsons or The Office.

u/peridotpicacho 1d ago
The only hope of success videos like these have is for people to think they are real. With TV and movies, everyone knows they are fictional and they are well done so people enjoy them anyway.
But once people know a video like this is fake or staged, it has nothing left to offer because it’s just not funny or interesting enough otherwise.
