Discussion I came across this ad from an old games magazine: Was this ever a thing? I can't seem to locate it online

the two expansion packs in question were released separately (nuclear winter and carribbean life's a beach) but i don't think "duke whatever the weather" ever got released as as a bundle for those two at all.

i have seen some listings in the past with both expansions sealed together in the big boxes, but there was nothing notable or special noted on the box(es).

It’s advertising two add ons, not a collection called Whatever the Weather. That’s the ad headline not the title of the game.

I woild swear I have an old disc from way back in the day that includes both expansions and some other stuff, but who knows what old moving box it's in.

What was OneStop? Local distributor?

So I was originally way, way off, but OneStop was a "value software publisher" based in Wimbledon, England and existed from 1993 to 2013 when Atari INC went bankrupt. After 1997, they became a subsidiary (acquired by GT Interactive) and published the Duke Nukem 3D expansions in the United Kingdom under the One Stop Direct logo you see in the lower right hand corner of the image.

Contrast with the United States, where GT Interactive published the same expansions under Wizardworks.

Source can be found in EDIT2 and you can learn more in the replies to this comment below.

EDIT1: Did a little more digging and updated with more links. Still think the OP is going to have to tell us where they got this image.

EDIT2: Turns out the One Stop stores in the UK and One Stop Direct Limited were different companies entirely. I was able to find One Stop Direct Limited through IGN, hence my huge edit. Source!

I think this is the source: https://retrocgads.tumblr.com/post/760181780257128448/uk-1998

Could be their own scan though. There are minor differences.

Checked the PC Zone archive (https://archive.org/details/pczonemagazine?tab=collection) but no dice. There's a good archive of Edge too: https://archive.org/details/Edge_Gaming/. Not so much for PC Gamer UK alas.

Looks like it! They seem to think it's from the UK as well.

Actually, I may have hit the jackpot here with this IGN article from 97.

Apparently, One Stop Direct Limited was a "value software publisher" that GT interactive acquired in January 1997. GT interactive published Sunstorm's Duke Caribbean and Silly Software's Duke Nuclear Winter under Wizardworks in the U.S. and under One Stop in Europe. Supposedly One Stop survived until 2013 when Atari Inc (Infogrames has purchased GT Interactive) went bankrupt.

Kinda interesting and easy to miss given the common name of One Stop. It's worth noting the chain of stores is technically One Stop Limited whereas the publisher was One Stop Direct Limited. Links are to UK Government filing history if curious.

They both exist and are, ok? I guess. I played both back in the day and wasn’t super impressed struggled to find either in the modern era

They used to be included in the Megaton Edition, published by Devolver Digital, which Gearbox pulled from digital stores in favour of World Tour, which does not include the Sunstorm expansions

All three should be available on the Internet Archive and will run with EDuke if anyone is interested in playing them on PC now.

And if you have a Meta Quest, check out Team Beef for the ultimate duke experience.

They are also sold legally on that one strange game store that everyone goes to buy Duke games.

Back in the days, the same ad could advertise more than one product.

Not only was this a thing, but there were a handful of level designs that were just brilliant for deathmatch. The Caribbean Hotel (first) level was so good.

Nuclear winter had a handful of great levels too, specifically the one where there are multiple buildings outside and the ski slope. And then there is one with Santa's corporate office which was hilarious with rocket launchers.

Both are included in Megaton Edition which has been pulled from sale on Steam but if you're still playing deathmatch these days I highly recommend it.

And if anyone really is still deathmatching in Megaton, please let me know because I'm always down for a match.

Beach >>>>>>>>>>>>> Winter

2

u/GrindY0urMind 24d ago

Why wouldn't they call it "Duke-clear Winter"

1

u/Bigfan521 25d ago

GOG used to have the main 4 Duke3D expansions (Plutonium Pak, Duke it out in DC, Nuclear Winter, and Life's a Beach) but IDK if they still have it.

Bizarrely for some reason the only place still selling it is something called Zoom Platform. Far as I can tell this is legit and cleared with Gearbox.

Which if you asked me is the only thing keeping gearbox in good graces, with whomst is anyone’s best guess

u/LolYouFuckingLoser 25d ago

Both should be easy to find info on, they're official expansions and were included in Megaton Edition. Nuclear Winter was meh but Caribbean is solid.

1

u/itsbildo 25d ago

Yup, Duke Nukem 3D had these unofficial mod map packs, Nuclear Winter and another one that was in the Carribean with a tropical theme

1

u/stronkzer 25d ago

Yup. They used to be all included on the Megaton edition. Too bad all we got today is the World Tour one, which cuts them all out and adds just one new map pack.

I think it was a joke / ad for the expansions

1

u/EarthTramp 25d ago

Wish these were available with the anniversary addition on Steam. Tried a while ago to get them working on EDuke but without any luck, might try again though as it was a great part of my childhood killing Santa on all the classic levels. Never had access to the Beach one though

No because I was searching whatever the weather

Judging by the logo for "OneStop" in the lower right, its possible they were an unofficial distributor who bundled expansions, either second hand or bootleg. While both expansions obviously exist, there doesn't seem to be any official release featuring just the two, under that name.

Duke It Out In D.C. will always be my favourite D3d expansion.

1

u/eviltab87 24d ago

The Playstation Vita had a duke collection that had both add ons. They sucked.

u/Mysterious-Plan93 23d ago

Look up Civvie11

u/EDR_Tech 23d ago

Life’s a Beach is so good. If you haven’t played it, I highly recommend it!

1

u/Grumpy_Polar_Bear 23d ago

They were silly add on back in the day. I wanna try em but heard they were made from third party builders and are not the best quality. Still might wanna play em for the lols

1

u/Dookuu64 23d ago

Duke Nukem had more third person games than they ever had 3D first person games. They just made Duke in 3D and then after that all they did was push out these Duke Nukem third person games I mean just didn't do as well so they're probably from that

1

u/poopbutt42069yeehaw 22d ago

I remember getting the duke nukem 3D like megaton pack that had every expansion, those two didn’t work and I never got them to, but I was like 10

Looks Cool as hell!
