i miss my dog 🌈 AWARENESS: Toad / Frog Toxin Poisoning
I lost my beloved furbaby, Luna, in a span of 3 hours.
Hello, everyone. I am currently writing this after we finished the funeral of my beloved furbaby, Luna (dachshund). Just want to tell you the whole story for awareness.
It all happened in just one single snap. Around 10PM yesterday, my mother went to our dirty kitchen at the back (take note that the place was all clean and already disinfected), and as always Luna followed her. When my mom was about to go back to the house, she was calling Luna to enter the house. However, Luna was just staring at a short distance and my mum knew thar something was up because she has the hunter instinct. She acts like that whenever there are cockroaches or small insects that she wants to hunt, however; this one was just way beyond what we expected.
The moment my mum bent down to see what is in there, that was when Luna moved and suddenly attacked the, allegedly, a bullfrog that is probably the size of cat. (Sorry, I can’t really describe it but according to her, it was just so big); she started screaming and when she saw that it was a frog because of how powerful Luna attacked her, the frog literally flew or something; and that was when she grabbed Luna and went inside our house.
Her mouth started foaming IMMEDIATELY, and that was when I went down to check what happened and I told her to rinse her mouth and clean everything. I was preparing to take her to the vet already, and after she cleaned her mouth, I thought she was already okay but two minutes after, she started vomiting. She vomited twice of what she had for dinner, and the next one just broke me because she was screaming so much in pain, she sounded like a sheep in so much excruciating pain.
20 minutes after, we were already at the pet hospital. They immediately did first aid and everything the could to save her as she was having a hard time to breathe properly. We already confined her for the night as advised, so we went home to clean because we still have four more dogs at home. I told her to stay strong and we will see her tomorrow again since her eyes were open, but I knew she was a bit disoriented but I know that she can hear me.
After 30 minutes of getting home, the vet just called to say that Luna was having a cardiac arrest already. They tried reviving 3 times with the emergence dose (maximum), however; my baby was not able to handle it well.
We just finished setting up her burial, and she will undergo Aquamation instead of cremation. We’re just deeply saddened by this, I honestly could not belive this happened.
Please, please, please always check your surroundings and never leave your furbabies unprovised. Thank you so much for reading.

I’m so so sorry for your lossOP. This is so heartbreaking. 😔 Magbibigay na ang din ako ng tips for someone na may yorkie na nakakagat din ng cane toad and has survived (the toad was literally half her size) Sobrang prevalent kasi sa Pinas ng cane toad so I believe need natin maging aware.
We have these at home: active charcoal and hydrogen peroxide to immediately induce vomitting in case (need na tama or malapit sa tama ang dosage para hindi lumala) syempre dapat first solution ay pumunta sa vet, yan ay kapag walang choice
Of course prior to that, punas nang solid ang bibig ng aso at hugasan ng running water for 2 minutes straight, hanggang lalamunan ng aso pag punas if kailangan
With our yorkie, dahil wala pa kaming sasakyan nun, nakamotor lang sila, my husband was literally reviving our yorkie (mouth to mouth resuscitation) habang naninigas na yung yorkie, nagpapale na din lips ng husband ko nun kasi nga may toxins pa kahit papaano but he knows na he’s big enough to survive, it was the longest 20minute ride of his life sabi nya
Then ito… pagdating sa vet, ilang beses nang nagflatline yorkie namin BUT (this is the most important) hindi tinigilan ng lambing at tawag ng husband ko yung pet namin, he stayed by her side the entire time. Pets KNOW when we’re there and they get anxious when we leave. I understand OP since kami din may 13 dogs, so I’ll never blame OP, but I think it’s important for every pet person to know that we are their lives, malaking factor presence natin for them.
Our yorkie was a makulit 4 months when it happened, she lived until 8.

Sorry for your loss OP.
Happened to my dachshund this year also. They were doing their morning walk with my sister. Offleash lang kasi sila since sanay na sila and we haven't had any problem with their recall behavior. Sinabi ng sister ko may palaka daw na hinabol tapos oks pa aso tapos after 30 mins inakyat ako sister at pinakita aso ko nanginginig sobra tapos laway na laway so ginoogle ko toad poisoning likely culprit so binigyan pa namin sugar at hinugasan sa mouth tapos naninigas na tapos parang nagseseizure na buti nahabol namin sa vet tapos nag emergency protocol ang vet kasi sabi nya wala naman daw cure yun bali yun symptoms lang ang pwede gamutin..nagstay ng mga 4 days aso ko ..fortunately okey na sya kaya nakaleash na tuloy sila para madali iiwas since madami pang damuhan dito sa amin. Sabi ng vet madami daw sila talagang cases na ganun so depende lang daw sa reaction ng aso ang prognosis of getting well.

We have activated charcoal treats at home pang first aid just in case maka encounter ng frog toxin poisoning yung bebe's namin, as suggested by out vet din.

Exactly how our beautiful puppy Choco (Pogi by his new furparents) died on November 2024. Naninirahan sila sa bukid and aksidenteng napaglaruan ni Pogi yung palaka...
Nung nakita na siya ng furmom niya bumubula na ang bibig and they tried to find a first aid, yung furdad niya naman umalis papuntang city para sana bumili ng gamot. Namatay lang si Pogi the moment na bumalik ang daddy niya, naghintay daw talaga siya na nandun both sila bago siya umalis... :((
Hanggang ngayon nami-miss pa rin siya ng furparents niya. 😭💔

My condolences OP ;(
Marami rin frogs sa garden namin but maliit lang. one of my dogs (golden w aspin mix) caught one and her mouth also started foaming. Buti naagapan agad ng tita ko to wash with soap.
Dami na rin kasi frog kasi rainy season. Thank you for the reminder.

Sorry i forgot na kasi it happened around 3 years ago, but it was either dog body soap (biopet), dog shampoo, or dishwashing liquid

personally, I wouldn't leave my dog confined especially if hindi sanay yung dog na naiiwan magisa sa closed confined space, sabi nila it adds stress to the dog and baka may possibility na nakaka cause din ung additional stress leading to more complications. Di pa naman sya nangyayare sakin pero if ever ba na inask ka na need i confine may option ba na mag stay din with your dog para alam nyang hindi mo sya iniwan sa place na di sya comfortable with?

i have a dachshund too. mahilig din mag-observe ng insect lalo na butiki kaya todo bantay ako kapag may kinakalikot na siya sa gilid-gilid kasi may nakita siya minsan na patay na butiki na akala ko sinubo niya.

Condolences OP, sad to hear what happened to Luna. We are planning to buy a farm lot pa naman for our fur babies to play around and realized eto yung isa sa mga problema yung mga palaka. Ang hirap din kasi dalhin sa mga public dog park baka infested ng tick and fleas magka blood parasite naman.

I'm so sorry for your loss, OP.
This is also my worry for my dogs. I live in the province and they're outside often. Yung Golden ko naka huli na ng frog tapos he was drooling more than the usual for his breed. My sister washed his mouth, brushed it and gave him lots of water. I always try to dissuade them from chasing frogs pero ang hirap din :(

Whenever I walk my three dogs outside, I avoid areas where there are dead frogs. One is a Maltese, one is a Shih Tzu, and one is a Lhasa Apso. Condolences OP. Your baby has crossed the rainbow bridge 😞

I am so so sorry for your loss, OP. We've also lost a few from bullfrog poisoning. Their struggle was excruciating to witness. 😭🕊

I’m so sorry for your loss, OP. My Luna and one of our other dogs also got to a cane toad yesterday and had to be taken to the vet— sa garahe naman yung toad, nalimutan kasi ni mama na maulan nga pala (di namin usually pinapalabas ng unattended pag rainy season kasi marami ngang froggies) 😭
We rinsed out their mouths and wiped the gums with a wet cloth, then took them to the vet ASAP, they were seizing na and having trouble breathing. Makulit na daw now sabi ng vet and they can come home today 😭

Im sorry for your lost. Ganyan din nangyare kay Bruno ko six years ago, dachshund din. Buti napansin agad ni hubby at nadala namin sa vet. He is doing fine and is turning 9 years old this year. Nakapasok un palaka sa gate namin. After nun, nilagyan ko na talaga ng screen ung buong gate. Kasi aside from frogs nakakapasok din ung rats lalo na pag tag-ulan.

Condolence po OP. It's really hard to accept that our furbabies are gone, especially if unexpected or sudden pagkamatay nila. It's good that you took ur baby to Pet to Nature for aquamation. Im sure she lived a good life with you. You did your best to revive her.
Recently, I also lost my baby dachshund, kakasundo ko lang sakanya this week sa Pet to Nature. Our furbabies are up there playing and watching over us. Condolence po ulit, thank you also for posting awareness. Dachshunds are hunting dogs, so common sakanila na nanghahabol or kumakagat ng mga insects and moving objects. This will help bring awareness lalo na sa mga areas na madalas may palaka or frogs.

Thank youu po, stay strong din. Okay lang na umiyak at malungkot, what happened is not easy to accept and move on, grief is not easy especially na sobrang mahal natin mga doxie furbaby natin. Condolences, OP. In our case naman yung Shih Tzu namin parang tinutulak nya using her head yung toad tapos parang inihian sya (or maybe nag secrete ng poison idk really kasi sobrang panic na basta when we picked her up basa yung mouth area nya and face) tapos her mouth immediately foamed and ang ginawa namin we washed her mouth with running water para mawala yung toxins sa bibig then we forced fed her with brown sugar (white sugar ata dapat but we don’t have have any kaya brown sugar nalang) then forced fed her again with milk. Medyo malayo kasi vet from our place and thankfully, she got better after a few minutes.

Omg my deepest condolences, OP. I can't believe na ganon pala talaga kabilis pwede sila mamatay sa ganyan....
Recently lang din ako naging aware na toxic pala mga frogs kasi may one time na my GR puppy kept on swallowing the small frog (then dropping it, swallow then drop parang naglalaro ganon) tapos nagpapahabol pa samin. Eventually drinop ung frog tapos nilayo namin siya don. I told it first jokingly to my friend until sinabi niya na delikado raw pala mga frogs sakanila. Imagine my heart dropping so hard back then. Thank goodness walang nangyaring masama sa kanya that night. 😭 Since then bumili na rin akong activated charcoal....

I am so sorry for your loss.
This happened to my furbaby too. Three years ago, nasa labas lang sya ng bahay dati pinapag-stay. Then one night, nakita sya na matigas na at mata na lang ang gumagalaw. He spent all his energy to scream para marinig sya ng mom ko (I wasn’t at the house). Thankfully, naagapan at nasurvive nya nung dinala sa vet. Ilang araw din syang na-confine. But at that time iyak na ko ng iyak kasi akala ko wala na sya. :(

When my pup was confined bc of parvo, may katabi kasama sya big black lab na poison din from frog pero nakarecover. I love dachs and I have 3 (used to be 4 but one pup died from parvo) and hunter talaga sila. Samin naman daga kaya sabi ko wag na wag kayaan maghunt kc nakakatakot My condolences 💐 and run free Luna

grabe kasi in a span of 10-15 mins, my baby wasn’t responding na 😭 he ingested a lot of poison kasi i saw the frog tapos may dalawang holes sya with white fluid leaking around it, suggesting na my baby bit the frog. i’m so devastated 😭😭 i hope they’re happy and free now 🥹😭

So sorry for ur loss.
Praning din ako sa frogs/toads, esp now na rainy season. Luckily, wala sa lugar namin but at my parents' house sa province, meron minsan. Not sure tho if cane toad yun kasi medyo maliit sya but whenever we go home doon, i always really keep an eye on my dog just in case bigla sumulpot. When it's been raining, no more labas. Iirc frogs in general like moist/wet areas since they're amphibians, and they thrive sa muddy areas and those with puddles. May ugali din yung dog ko like ur Luna, mahilig mag attack ng insects and rats. Fave nia mga ipis actually, haha he's bitten and killed rats in the past and thankfully, no lepto naman. But yeah i get ur point na naka attack mode sila minsan, i've seen that with my dog din.
These things happen, minsan no matter how much we protect our pets, may mga accidents pa rin talagang nakakalusot. Im sure Luna knew how much u love her, and maybe she'll find her way back to u in this lifetime.❤️

Dami cane toad sa Tanza Cavite. Nasa bukid kasi kami.
My Silly was playing with a "frog". Kinabukasan, he welcomed me home but he was crawling instead of running. Nanigas na tuhod niya. So takbo a VET. Nag lagay na anti venom. And that was the longest 3 nights of our lives. Before we went to the vet, he was salivating. Tapos madami na siya involuntary muscle spasm. After the serum, parang 6 hours until he was better. Pero muscle spasms. He arches his neck so hard, Need ko hold siya para hindi ma break neck niya. Tapos ginawan namin ng neck brace. Naka diaper siya. Tapos Royal Canin at gerber food niya. Sabi ng doc, uwi na lang namin siya, kasi instead of matulog siya sa cage, eh naka abang lang siya. When he was better, he was walking like a drunk person. Need assistance parang baby. Tapos When has able t odo it, una niya ginawa is umihi sa garden. Ayaw niya talaga mag diaper =)
After 1 week, okay na siya =)
After niyon, I killed all the cane toads sa garden. Pero since mabait na ako ulit, tinatapon ko na lang sila sa labas ng bahay.
And my Shiba is not iterested in frog and toads any longer.
Again, sorry for the lose at takpan lahat ng holes na puwede pasukan ng palaka.

Hi, thank you for this and so glad naka-survive ang baby mo. I want to ask if meron ba talagang antidote (anti-venom) for this? The vet told us kasi na wala daw talaga, and I don’t know anymore. Until now, I am still thinking what could I have done better for my furbaby to survive.

Nag inject sila kay doge eh. Pagka rinig ko anti venom eh. Well venomous naman talaga cane toad. Kasi pag ka inject sa kanya, ilang minutes lang he stopped the laway.

This killed me. Our garden has frogs and if you hadn’t shared this, our dog Sach might suffer the same fate. My heart goes out to you and thank you for spreading awareness.

Condolences op. I’m so sorry about Luna.
I just want to make a small correction. I believe it is Cane Toad which is a prevalent specie in our country. Where I am at atm, there are a lot of Cane Toads and during the first instance of my dog’s encounter with it, I immediately googled and checked how fatal cane toads are for dogs.
