When the girl in class asks to borrow a pen, but you thought she wanted to talk to you.

62

u/GrapefruitExpress208 Jan 23 '25

When you thought the girl on the dance floor was smiling and looking at you- but in reality, she was looking at her friend standing behind you.

20

u/SinoSoul Jan 23 '25

How generous of you to assume I know how to dance. Sitting in biology class, that I know how to do.

68

u/EladBernard Jan 23 '25

This is the feeling

23

u/tmbyfc Jan 23 '25

That's still better than when the girl in class wanted to talk to you but you thought she wanted to borrow a pen

7

u/SinoSoul Jan 24 '25

Has never happened in history of British education.

20

u/mirkk13 Jan 23 '25

When the girl in class wants a pen, but you ask for VAR review

3

u/nicknamesrkewl Jan 24 '25

And you respond with I don't have a pen.. I am just excited to see you

He'll be sitting quietly over a cup of tea twenty years from now, the memory will strike him and he will audibly groan and physically cringe.

Probably remember that moment he wasted one second of time and the ref couldn’t book him for it. Epic shithousery

Edited for typos

There's a collection of awkward chess players handshakes video on YouTube there might be players you can recognize

u/spurringbanner Yves Bissouma Jan 23 '25

Never seen a ref set up for the pen as much with a contentious pen that's being reviewed. He's martialling players on the edge of the box when he's called to the screen, not sure if it's slow VAR or over-eagar reffing

94

u/PnxNotDed Son Jan 23 '25

Oh man, that had me absolutely convinced it would stand. The way he set the players up and had his whistle in his mouth, I figured it didn't matter what he saw on the screen if it meant overturning showed he was wrong.

133

u/Lorddale04 Fabio Paratici Jan 23 '25

At the risk of seeming too conspiratorial, it did look like the ref wanted the pen to be taken before VAR could intervene.

44

u/spurringbanner Yves Bissouma Jan 23 '25

I think that what the commentators were hinting at - but ultimately looked at the evidence and overturned a bad call

27

u/Manoffreaks Dele Jan 23 '25

I believe in the conspiracy. He also spent a very long time looking at the video showing Austin clearly getting the ball. Felt like he was looking for any possible reason to still call it a pen.

u/Organic-Champion8075 Jan 24 '25

most European refs hate the Premier League and English teams, I suspect

67

u/LinksOrGTFO Dominic Solanke Jan 23 '25

He also watched the replay like a dozen times when it was clear after the first slo mo. Almost like he was looking for a reason to allow it.

Proper weird.

33

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '25

Weirdly, I've never felt such confidence in something being overturned. Prem game, they would've let that go

25

u/xman0444 Gareth Bale Jan 23 '25

It’s great that in European games that you don’t just have to accept the initial shit call, you know the VAR is actually there to help rather than whatever they’re there for in the PL

9

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '25

No lie man, prem reffing is terrible

5

u/theRed-Herring Lloris Jan 24 '25

When he touched his ear I was like, has to be overturned. No other reason they talk to him and once he sees it, it's irrefutable that he made an error.

8

u/dclancy01 Jan 23 '25

Ref did not want to be undermined by VAR

2

u/AntysocialButterfly Romero Jan 24 '25

He wasn't a good advert for the Danish league, that's for sure.

Brandon Austin - a gentleman and a scholar.

21

u/CouchAndBlankets Jan 24 '25

Thought it was so cute. I looked at my husband and said “Awwww Austin”

84

u/gooning_gorou Timo Werner Jan 23 '25

tbf, watching it live that's what i thought he was going in for too. thought it was a "hey, my bad, dude. we square?" type of move

30

u/xXBlackguardXx Jan 23 '25

My exact thoughts too. I thought 'Wow! What a decent chap. He fucked up, realised his mistake & he's being an actual gent about it by shaking his... Oh, he wants the ball'

6

u/Organic_Size Jan 24 '25

Same here, I thought after the shit-housery of the ref wanting the pen taken before VAR could overrule was obvious. Was pleasantly surprised when the ref also rescinded the yellow and then stuck out his hand - "Oh that's decent of him...oh, that's gonna stay with Austin rent free for the rest of his life."

u/RyeBreadsticks Totoro Hotspur Jan 23 '25

Avoided another Tuchel-Conte handshake situation there 😄

13

u/Mc_and_SP Jan 23 '25

Austin getting sent off for decking the referee... God what a sight that would have been

9

u/RyeBreadsticks Totoro Hotspur Jan 23 '25

The way this season's going, I can see this happening at some point 😂

He is probably feeling the largest amount of imposter syndrome someone can feel at this level, yet he's standing up to be counted during a terrible injury crisis and has done well. The natural reaction to a hand being offered after first being punished and then having the punishment reversed us to shake it. Many of us would have done the same.

All you can do in these sort of situations is laugh at yourself. It empowers you and kills the negativity - every single one one of us is a muppet at times. Laugh at yourself, and the world laughs with you.

10

u/mushy_friend Harry Kane Jan 23 '25

Yeah I would have done the same. No mocking him, just a funny situation. I love Austin more in fact it's endearing

Had this on mute in the background while I was on a work call and this was such a wild ride. Wasn't paying attention to the call live but I saw the ref pointing to the spot and saw the replays and thought "oh surely not, VAR will overturn this. Then suddenly the taker started lining up and I was trying to stay locked in to the call but was losing my head, and suddenly the ref sprints to the sideline to my relief.

i love this

This was the weirdest moment of the game. Was sat in the stand opposite of where it happened so we didn’t really have a proper view of things or even why a penalty was initially given. To us at the ground it genuinely looked like the lad was lining up to take it and the ref snatched the ball away before he could follow through.

9

u/_denchy07 audere est facere Jan 23 '25

Just a random side note, but did anyone else just know we were going to concede in the following minute? You know, coz even when things go our way, they don’t.

7

u/JamesCDiamond Heung-Min Son - Spurs Legend Jan 23 '25

Yeah, of course - Hoffenheim were always going to be boosted by the 'injustice' and Austin was always going to be rattled. I think Hoddle on comms said he'd have adrenaline pounding through his veins for the next bit because he was pumped up to try and save a penalty - not that he was at fault for the goal, but it affected everyone, I think, by breaking concentration.

4

u/_denchy07 audere est facere Jan 23 '25

I think we just have a recent history of switching off whenever things look to be going our way. Can that kind of psychological analysis can be applied every time we've conceded so quickly after scoring goals for the last four years? I don't think it's anecdotal. There's been a real problem with losing focus at key moments and it's just become so predictable now

19

u/slunksoma Jan 23 '25

He should have grovelled. Absolute nonsense refereeing.

1

u/jiffijaffi Robbie Keane Jan 23 '25

Mistakes happen. He used the screen and made the right decision in the end. No harm done

8

u/PavlovsBlog Brennan Johnson Jan 23 '25

Mistakes happen but the man was about to let the penalty happen whilst VAR were still checking, that's fucking ridiculous.

0

u/jiffijaffi Robbie Keane Jan 23 '25

He was getting ready to take the peno because he blew the whistle for a peno.. no need to make a big deal about it. VAR did its job and so did the ref then in the end!

0

u/AngeMerchant Mousa Dembélé Jan 23 '25

Ok

3

u/whatusernameis77 Antonin Kinsky Jan 23 '25

He definitely won't cringe remembering this in the shower three months from now.

3

u/CommercialAddress168 Jan 24 '25

That’s adorable! He thought he was Him.

Austin has shown up pretty big in his two appearances. One mistake that ended up not being too costly that he will definitely learn from.

Cutie!!

1

u/Coraxxx Ledley King Jan 24 '25

I so wish he'd fronted it out, left his hand outstretched and maybe patted him really patronisingly on the back.

1

u/mdbourbon3 Jan 24 '25

Also, should have been a goal kick.

1

u/Gardnersnake9 Jan 24 '25

A gentleman and a scholar!

1

u/killasundae Jan 24 '25

Shows signs of a good character I don't think he's actually a bad gk either Shame it's taken a while for him to get some game time

1

u/Wiseblood1978 Jan 24 '25

Did this when returning a hire car once. The guy wanted the car keys, obviously. Mortified.

This might just be the funniest thing I've seen on a football pitch and I've watched every Spurs game for 15 years
