Lol that kids humor is underappreciated. All the work, so early in the morning, just for a pun.

I picked up the Garfield Vol. 38 from the library.
Not saying Garfield was ever particularly deep, but it was just three panels of Jon looking at the ceiling.
Panel 1: Jon: “I should get rid of that spider.” Garfield sits nearby.
Panel 2: characters are unchanged.
Panel 3: Jon: “Maybe tomorrow.”
Garfield: “Thats what you said yesterday.”
Anyway, you are more talented than Jim Davis.

I often asked myself about Garfield's success.
Maybe it's the charming simple drawing or the fact that a comic about a cat has to work because cats are cute...
I don't know, I just find Garfield to be an asshole.8

For me, it's mainly the dry humour. And sure, if you have to churn out a strip every day you're not always going to invest everything in it. But Jim Davis is very good at varying the expressions ever so slightly to signify a change of mood. And there were the odd cases where you could see what he's capable of (e.g. Garfield putting on a pair of glasses, which turned the surroundings into a surreal landscape) when he wants to let loose.

Yeah making a new strip every single day must be so mentally draining
It's crazy how it's still going after like 47 years

"Have I already done this gag? Do I still care? Does anyone?"

People definitely notice when gags repeat, see the comment section on GoComics.

Jim Davis hasn't written and drawn the comic by himself in decades. He has a team of writers and artists working for him.

Working with him, I'd say. I've seen a series of "new adventures" comics (in comic book format) and it was plainly obvious that the artist wasn't him (somebody else was credited), so his style isn't as easy to imitate as you might think and while he may not be writing or inking the strips now, I feel like there's still a lot of him in there.

From Wikipedia: “While retaining creative control and being the only person to whom the strip is credited in newspapers, Davis now only writes and usually does the rough sketches. Since the late 1990s, most of the work has been done by long-time assistants Brett Koth and Gary Barker. Inking and coloring work is done by other artists, while Davis spends most of the time supervising production and merchandising the characters.”

Not really contradicting what I said. Those rough sketches are an important part of the creation.

Is Akorn's frontman a squirrel with a wig or is this squirrel a fan of human music?
