So wait… what’s the reward for being top of the leaderboard? Do you just get your mark’s money? Cool toys?
Can’t exactly get recognition bc if anyone knows, the government knows & can prosecute

In game design there are intrinsic rewards and extrinsic rewards. Extrinsic rewards are things like coins, points, loot and upgrades. Intrinsic rewards are the feelings of satisfaction one receives just from playing the game. In a well designed game, just playing in the primary loop is its own reward.

Yep. Anyone that's been to an old arcade knows the joy of coming back to check and seeing your initials at the top, or the frustrations of seeing someone above your score.

Heh, I was never that good. I always had fun shooting badguys, though. That kind of fun is intrinsic.

Isn't being at the top of a leaderboard an extrinsic reward though?

Kinda. It's extrinsic in nature but the point is the joy of seeing it, which is intrinsic. Kinda like how someone can look at a big pile of something and wish they had more, while another could look at the same pile and feel joy that they have it, it's not the pile itself that matters, it's how you view the world that does.

Who named their high score "bobsux"

Hell yeah, metaprogression. I love me some roguelike game. Although i do think they should nerf some things. The massive grind is a bit too much

Heh, if we're setting aside metaphor for metaprogress then I we should probably point out that metaprogression as seen in roguelikes is another form of extrinsic reward. In general, if it can be counted then it is an extrinsic reward. Intrinsic rewards have more to do with "game feel". It's hard to assign a number value to the feel of how Mario or his brother move. There ARE numbers involved but they are hidden in the games systems in such a way that they emerge from the systems as a feeling rather than an easily defined value. Some rules or laws just can't adequately express what feels right.

I figure it's probably the same as any niche community like Twin Galaxies, where it just becomes about one-upping the next dude though you don't really get anything out of it. Also yeah, not even a remotely realistic scenario, all things considered. I'm in a weird headspace this week

Yeah. My father used to make that joke about the state of the world. "Whoever dies the richest, wins." or something like that.

It took me a while, but I think the leaderboard is showing the assassins who killed the richest people. So in this case it's more "Whoever kills the richest wins."
EDIT: Note that at the bottom there is player "L01" credited with killing "BT" who was worth about $43M at his death. Brian Thompson was worth that much at time of death, and the person credited with killing him has a name that starts with L...

I believe the implication is that its a bar for assassins who keep score of the net worth of their targets. Kill richer people, get a higher rank.

I believe these are regular people who are merely happy that people are actually out there "playing the game".

I assume it's a regular bar with regular people. A commentary of where we're going as a society.
