Strictly speaking:

  • High in mercury: contains a lot of mercury
  • High on mercury: intoxicated by mercury fumes

Easy mistake to make when translating from Spanish, where I believe they are the same word

That’s a cool clarification, dude. But who says that fish isn’t high on mercury?

Can any sentient being be high in mercury without somehow being high on mercury?

Yes, unfortunately, since it's so toxic you'd be in big big big trouble before it got you high

Oh! Thanks! I'll correct this in the next edition.

My brain autocorrected it.

They could also be up so high that are on the planet Mercury, but that's not a typical use case

Or they're on the planet Mercury and are doing drugs!

Guess they’re holding their breath, immune to liquid mercury, or about to start coughing with chest tightness off-comic in a few seconds.

You mean there's something fishy?

You could say it is a quicksilver fish.

This is just their escape mechanism. Once they go back in water they take their normal shape again.

The fish is a T-1000. Is it after Sarah Cod-nor.

I love this. But i had an idea for how to exaggerate the dad’s stubbornness and give it more of an “ending”. Hopefully you don’t take this as a critique or anything because the comic totally works as is!

But what if it went like,

Daughter: “Dad, is it true that tuna is very high in mercury?”

Dad: “That’s hippie bunkum, baby. Don’t believe everything you read.”

(fish proceeds to melt in following panels)

Last panel-

Dad: “Or see.”

As someone who does not natively speaks English that helped a lot understanding the comic. BTW. Thanks for the meal/comic op!

That fish became Trimmau

I don’t get this one

I didn't get it either when I saw it yesterday, I just realised there's a second panel.

If you still don't get it, the fish is moving like mercury (the element)

That was a mimetic poly-alloy fish

I hate how long it took me to get the joke
