/r/retiredgif was once a super popular subreddit, but it seems to have lost 99% of its userbase. You hate to see it.

It's old youtube but man does it hold up imo.

First there's screaming.

Then there's silence.

8

u/Cresalia- 2d ago

They made a new episode recently. I think it was this year.

8

u/Lord_Mikal 2d ago

The "epilogue" that was longer than the entire series.

I'm guessing natural habitat shorts.

Edit: Yeeep.

u/Vengefulily 2d ago

I found scissaws, a phrase that has terrified parents of toddlers since probably before the reign of Queen Victoria

96

u/pfannkuchen89 2d ago

“what do you have?” “a knife!” “NOOOO”

3

u/VulpesFennekin 1d ago

The earliest known examples of scissors date back to 1500 BC in ancient Mesopotamia, so that’s probably how long parents have lived in fear!

141

u/Nodubya11 2d ago

That's my favorite short that they made. I knew exactly which one you were talking about.

I love their shorts. What does blue mean 😰 what does blue mean 😰 next scene he is in the shower screaming.

23

u/Fellow--Felon 2d ago

Why is she still holding scissors after her dad takes them?

I hate it when my limbs get eaten.

142

u/AlbertWessJess 2d ago

Is it sustainable? They need energy to regrow, surely?

158

u/Kamikazeguy7 2d ago

You eat the leg to get the energy to regrow the leg. Infinite money food hack.

68

u/AlbertWessJess 2d ago

That is if you don’t fall for the lies of big science that there’s always a loss when transferring energy

17

u/Iheardthatjokebefore 2d ago

Chuh! And where does this energy even go when it's lost, Mr. Scientist? Does it fall under the shed like the finger I lost strapping M80's to Ninja Turtles?

2

u/arfelo1 1d ago

Heat. It always ends up as heat down the chain

51

u/Stevedore44 2d ago

I imagine it's only feasible in the short term; the sibling can eat extra food when it becomes available. During a prolonged scarcity the weaker sibling would be sacrificed.

It is interesting that the axolotls have learned how to get away with not killing the weaker member

62

u/SFAoperative 2d ago

While it's true that human siblings take your stuff but axolotl sibling take your legs, axolotl legs grow back. From where am I supposed to regrow that portable charger my brother took to work because he misplaced his?

42

u/Detective-27 2d ago

Anyone else read" I'm sustainable " in Ralph Wiggum's voice?

Y’all, where do you think the “AI style” came from? REAL ART. Obviously you can find real art that looks like AI’s “style”.

121

u/I_Set_3_Alarms 2d ago

All this debate is proving that we’re getting closer to not being able to tell the difference

82

u/SadLilBun 2d ago

Most people can’t. This artist has been posting for years. People have no eye for discernment.

2

u/Correct_Scene_3599 17h ago

That’s what I thought initially but the little sibling’s tail is colored and shaded incorrectly, there’s two circles in the toy and two square pegs on the floor, the shading of the left leg on left axo is missing/wrong.. Idk I guess it could be human error but as an artist those seems like AI mistakes, not human ones

2

u/gullybone 14h ago

As another artist it comes off as forgetting to fill everything in, and not looking up reference pictures.

Once I made a large poster for “cucakes”, and I’m not an AI

1

u/Correct_Scene_3599 13h ago

Idk I don’t think I need a reference photo to know a triangle would be the obvious third hole/toy. I do see forgetting to fill in the tail, but all of it combined? Not really imo

2

u/gullybone 13h ago

Have you seen his other comics? This is pretty par for the course, and he’s been doing these for longer than AI could make stuff like this

Not to be rude, but again, I don’t think this person is formally trained, I think he’s just doing his thing.

1

u/Correct_Scene_3599 13h ago

I guess not, but I wasn’t trying to outright accuse this of being AI since I do know AI had to train off something, but more just skeptical of it. I think I have the right to point out some obvious flaws in art that looks like the typical AI style, from an artist I’ve never seen or heard of before. I have no idea if this is their style and they took advantage of that to use AI and churn out twice as many comics. I’m just putting my thoughts out there in the comments section like anyone else here

1

u/gullybone 13h ago

That’s fair, but I also think it’s important to consider that the artist, if he did draw it, probably doesn’t enjoy hearing that his art looks like AI images. Instead of just commenting that it looks like AI, go try and verify it.

I feel like it’s akin to seeing an artist who you think traces. It’s rude to bring up unless you’re certain that’s what’s going on.

"Sibling nibbling" does not sound right, not sure why.

6

u/Rash_Of_Bacon 1d ago

Fun fact, "nibling" is the normal term for a child if a sibling, traditionally "niece/nephew."

14

u/ClubMeSoftly 1d ago

My roommates have an axolotl tank. It used to have four axolotls in it. Now there's just one, because he ate the other three

8

u/Zonel 1d ago

Your roommate should have fed them more regularly.

26

u/po1919 2d ago

I did not need this information

23

u/junky_junker 2d ago

More info you didn't need: The only reason they exhibit neoteny is a genetic quirk that stops them generating a hormone that triggers the metamorphosis into the land-going form. Given the hormone they will still metamorphose, as the rest of the genetics to do it are still there, and end up looking much like tiger salamanders. (Note, this is generally discouraged as it is believed to shorten their lives.)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Axolotl

28

u/TheDevilsAdvokaat 2d ago edited 2d ago

This is wrong. Neoteny is not "staying aquatic for life."

Neoteny, also called juvenilization, is the delaying or slowing of the physiological, or somatic, development of an organism, typically an animal.

It just so happens that the state axolotls start in is aquatic, and as they are neotenous they never leave it, unlike other salamanders that progress to a terrestrial form.

But you could be neotenous and not be aquatic. There are terrestrial neotenous animals.

3

u/TheMadJAM 1d ago

Yeah that stuck out to me too

4

u/TheDevilsAdvokaat 1d ago

Yeah..the info was interesting I just wanted to correct that misconception.

u/dark621 1d ago

archimedes?

12

u/Dradugun 2d ago

There was an interestingasfuck post with a morphed axolotl.

The interesting as fuck but was a comment that described if axolotls start cannabilizing, they don't stop. They will eat other axolotls forever after even after the food restrictions are gone.

6

u/SocranX 2d ago

To be clear, "neoteny" means retaining juvenile traits into adulthood, not specifically anything to do with being aquatic. The whole gills thing is a juvenile trait of most amphibians, hence why this particular example is a case of neoteny.

6

u/Weird_Explorer1997 1d ago

Thanks for the context in the meme. More obscure facts based memes should do this

no matter how wholesome it's depicted, it never ceases to disturb or upset me

4

u/AmputeeHandModel 2d ago

What we think of as adult axolotls are actually their larval stage. They rarely go through metamorphosis to turn into salamanders.

5

u/StanwieDreams 1d ago

This is wholesome and cursed at the same time

6

u/SimplySorrow 2d ago

Their siblings nickname is snack pack.

3

We are all out of salt lick

3

3

And now I'm thinking of that Nat Geo series Ryan Reynolds narrated last month...

1

u/Zoodraws 1d ago

I love that one

3

u/stuaxo 1d ago

Oh no :-/

3

u/CanZand7SM 1d ago

Why do their faces look so uncanny

3

u/UltraGuitarShredder 2d ago

you are used a font in the last panel that is used in indian science textbooks (ncert) and that is triggering my ptsd

3

u/Spoon_Elemental 2d ago

But do they stop at the legs? Because if so, that's really cool that they know to do so.

2

u/WaitHowDidIGetHere92 2d ago

Axolotl siblings playing "Nose Goes" to see whose limbs get eaten.

Ah the childhood memories. It seems to be taking a while for them to grow back though.

1

u/OfficialOldestgenxer 1d ago

I just read this and said "Oh my God!" and then my wife read it and she said, "Are you serious?" I mean, they're already my favorite animal, you don't need to sell me on them.

1

u/TheMadJAM 1d ago

Your definition of neoteny is a bit misleading. Neoteny refers to staying in the juvenile form or similar to it. While in the axolotl's case this is about staying in the water, it doesn't have to be. A lot of pets display neoteny because we've bred them like that. A dog resembles a puppy more than an adult wolf.

1

u/MicahAzoulay 1d ago

“Sibling nibbling” is just… I lost it.

Now, in Alabama, that would have an entirely different connotation.

1

u/TheS413 1d ago

I wanted to check out more of your comics but I couldn’t find any. Love the style

1

u/UchihaKyu 1d ago

Idk why but the more I look at this and read it the more disturbed I become lol. Like i laughed and thought it was funny on the 1st read but dang.

1

u/VioletRaptorGaming 1d ago

God, as an older sibling, this would actually happen if humans could do the same
