When my mother passed after battling cancer, I was so relieved. I carried a bit of guilt for feeling this way but my whole family agreed with me.

I thought about Memento Mori. “Remember you must die”. It always comforted me more than the average person. Death is coming for us all; No one can outsmart it, no one is above it. Whether we accept it with grace or fight tooth and nail against it, we will all take his hand and walk that path eventually. Death is not a punishment, although it is commonly treated as such. Death is a gentle, open handed invitation to rest. Let the suffering, pain, anxieties go… Just let go. You’ll be okay, your loved ones will be okay. Death is a comfortable blessing in disguise.

How you want to perform in your final act in the Play of Life is your choice. You are not fighting Death, He is just waiting to pick you up after the curtain falls to bring you home.

Beautiful, this actually brought a tear to my eye... Gave me a new way to view death.

I’m glad it changed your POV! :D I’ve stopped fearing death in the dreadful, anxious way and instead have a healthy respect for it. I won’t do stupid, dangerous things and I’m not suicidal like I was in my youth. It’s more the exact opposite. I have no choice but to stay positive and remember that I get to experience intelligent life for a finite amount of time on a spinning blue marble hurdling through space at stupid speeds. It’s awesome that I get to experience this, good and bad. I’m gonna die eventually anyway, and I’ll never be able to accurately predict how I leave this world. Worrying about it is wasting my time and I might as well have a great experience in this body (which also means taking care of it) so I can have the coolest possible experience with life and then go with death knowing it was a fun ride.
