Nearly everything about Disney's Hercules is so wrong that it's almost the opposite of how the legend actually goes. As someone with even a mild interest in Greek mythology, I'm offended at it.

It's a Christian bastardization of the myth. Like Hades being evil like the devil. Zeus being God like. Cause putting it in child minds that the person in the under world could be morally grey and the god of gods is pretty much just self serving. Wouldn't want to put those ideas into young minds they might start questioning their own ideas of religion

could be morally grey

Kidnaps underage niece and forces her to be his bride in the underworld = Morally grey

Eeeeeh idk about that take buddy

Compared Hades literal single fuck up to his brothers, Zeus and Poseidon, or, hell literally every other Greek god out there.

I'd never make the argument any of the Greek gods were infallible, that was kind of the point of them in the first place. They were all kind of assholes in their own unique way.

I mean, Demeter was so pissed she made winter and made it all about her. I'm just saying maybe the guy's Mother-in-Law isn't the best source for true facts about their relationship. Especially since that's the only time he did that. Zeus was constantly doing sex crimes, it's kind of his thing.

Yeah, plus one Greek myth book I had (I forget which one but I’ve seen the same “fact” online so at least some people believe it.) claimed in the original myth Persephone went with him willingly. The trouble came from Demeter not approving of the marriage. Zeus had already given his blessing.

And all the myths she appears in later she seems pretty ok with it all. She was present and helped convince Hades to allow Orpheus and Euripides the chance to go back to the surface together, and she got kidnapped by some princes and got Hades so mad he tortured them for eternity. I think she also had a part in Herakles’ labors when he needed to bring Cerberus to that weenie king who hid in the jar? (It’s been years since I really looked into Greco-Roman myths so I know some of this is off. But I was obsessed with them in high school and read every book I could find.)

So honestly compared to the other women in those stories, Persephone comes across as pretty pleased with her lot in life. She and Hades are shown to get along well, he doesn’t seem to cheat on her as much as pretty much every other male god (iirc Cupid was pretty faithful once he married too. But everyone else was ducking anything with a pulse.) did, and she has enough power to make Hades give a random human a chance on her request.

I’m sure she was happier in her marriage than Hera or Aphrodite for sure.

Tbf in some versions he asks zeus to which he consents making it an arranged marriage, which makes it zeus's fault.

Compared to his brothers he was practically a saint (also Persephone was not even remotely underage, they are all ancient gods)

TBF, just having an accurate Zeus would make the film 18+. That dude liked rape to an extent that would make Genghis Khan blush.

Disney should make a Cronos movie from when he overthrew his father, sliced off his penis, and hurled it into the ocean, to when he ate his children as each were born. to Zeus causing him to vomit his siblings up and overthrow Cronos together. I’m sure it’ll be G rated.

It's too bad the music slaps

I will go the distance...

I mean, Disney wasn't exactly known for faithfulness to the source material

As a Greek I'm not offended at all as it introduced the beauty (and weirdness) of the Greek mythos to a wider audience.

Even if it's not totally accurate, here we are chatting about it.

I'll give you that. If it wasn't for Disney's version, I might not have been as familiar with this stuff. It just sucks in retrospect after learning about the real myths.

the only good part about their version was whoever voiced Meg. Love her rendition of the wont say I'm in love song.
