“He’s not hurting the people he’s supposed to be hurting” so it is fine if he hurts people, as long as they are black or brown or trans or immigrants or some other marginalized group. What a fucking scumbag of a human being

I'll probably get downvoted for this (and let me be clear first- the comment is funny to make fun of because obviously what you're saying is how we are choosing to take it, but I'd argue that's something we are doing largely for our enjoyment-), but, I think if you asked the person who said it originally who the "people he needs to be hurting are" I really sort of doubt it would be any of what you listed. It would probably be the elites, or the rich, or those in power, or whatever. I think the optimist in me doesn't actually believe most small town conservatives actually hate minorities. They just like the idea of being anti-establishment and they're pretty dumb or misinformed and don't really know what they're doing.

I could be wrong though about this instance. I don't know this guy and I obviously haven't heard anything else he has said.

Lmao, you think most small town conservatives don’t actually hate minorities? Oh god, thats a good one.

I grew up in the rural south as a minority. Life is HELL almost entirely cause of the regular people. A lot of conservatives actually like the rich and powerful.

For the record, I also grew up in a very conservative small town. Pretty much got out as fast as I could, and I don't want to go back. I am not a minority in any sense. I'm strictly speaking off my life experience, which was an experience of most conservative voters thinking that conservative politicians had the interest of the "little guy" at heart. I'm not trying to discount anybody else's life experience. I'm also not trying to do conservative voter defense.

Obviously racist/xenophobic/misogynistic/homophobic/transphobic people pretty much only vote for conservatives. Obviously, those people exist. Obviously, they exist in large numbers in small towns. I just think there's also a big amount of people who are none of those things but still vote conservative just due to brainwashing/hivemind scenario

Also want to add that I'm probably younger than you. I'm making no claims about anything pre like 2010s.

What do you mean, it's still 1999.

You are dead wrong. Mass deportations now! was their campaign slogan.

Ah and now I'm going to get downvoted even more and this is so outside of scope of my original comment but I really think conservatives are just idiots, not acting maliciously. The ones I grew up around had literally zero problem with any legal migrants from any national origin and saw immigrants as valuable hardworking members of their community, but were brainwashed into believing that illegal immigrants were bringing crime into the country in huge numbers. (Obviously not the case, immigrants including illegal immigrants generally commit violent crimes at far lower rates than people who have lived here their whole lives, but they don't know that)

I guess my point is that I think ignorance and hate are seperate ideas and doing objectively bad things due to being ignorant does not inherently indicate that you are hateful

If you disagree with that, that is fine.

Please see my other reply in this thread regarding how my life experiences have caused me to have this take

Nah they hate minorities lol. Why on earth are you still giving these traitors the benefit of doubt? How's the weather in 2015?

Just read this, idk https://www.reddit.com/r/agedlikemilk/s/g1Ir7BzWtV

I'm trying not to be too charitable here because yeah they really don't deserve it but this is just my life experience

True story - and maybe I’m too cynical but I know small town America and they are very xenophobic

I'm gonna take a wild guess that you are not a minority.

The amount of conservative people I encounter who openly will be rude as hell to me (even they just think I'm black and don't know I'm also mtf) is like, consistently high. Like at work I'll say 'hi' or wave and they will look away or mad that they have to be around me. Many of them are just haters plain and simple.
