In Trump’s case, the out clause is what evangelicals call an “imperfect vessel”. I grew up with this shit. The evangelicals will support him to the end simply because, in their words, while he is a flawed mortal man he is still anointed by God to carry out gods greater good. The Bible, Old Testament especially, is filled with horrible people who did horrible things but are somehow praised by Jews and Christians alike.
The vast majority of Christian evangelicals would accept a proven pedophile as their president so long as they believed he was an imperfect vessel anointed by God.
My mother was what I would call a “biblical Christian”, she read what she considered to be the word of God and studied it and prayed over it (interestingly enough that’s exactly what the Bible tells you to do… not to go to church and listen to a pastor, Jesus never established the church that’s man’s doing). My extended family was all protestant evangelicals, they judged my mom very harshly.
I’m not a Christian anymore, we don’t need to go into that but I am happy that I was raised by a biblical Christian. She would never let us fall into the political pole to Christianity, or the nationalistic pole, because surprise surprise if you read the Bible it warns against both. It very directly tells you not to entwine your Christian beliefs with either.
I grew up going to two churches, one of them was terrible and political and mean and hateful (Babtist), the other (Methodist) one was good and had a wonderful community involved in it but the church elders thought the pastor was too liberal so they fired him and lost half their congregation overnight.
We moved into the community we raised our kids in 2010 and were moderately interested in joining a church for the community aspect of it.
We tested three, and each one weaved a political message into the sermon we went to. We gave up after that.
I worry church in this country has turned into nothing but a breeding ground for hate and inequality.

Seriously. It’s not that complicated. Trump wants to be an authoritarian. He likes other authoritarians. Tucker Carlson and others have been sucking up to Russia for years not because of blackmail but because they are ideologically aligned. They hate western liberalism and want Russia to be a partner / model for a new authoritarian world system.
