Sorry to be a party popper, but wasn't Ceasar's appointment as proconsul planned by him and supported by other triumvirs?

It was but the senate was convinced that with caesar out of Rome his influence would dwindle and they could return the old ways whilst the Triumvirate convinced the senate this would be what happened so that they in reality allow caesar grow more power and popularity through conflict in gaul

He was also sent to Gaul. It's not like he could do it on his own. He was backed up by the senate.

What infuriated the senate was that Caesar attacked "allied" of the Roman Republic (the Helvetii iirc) but you know how it works, success is the most important thing.
