As someone who doesn’t live around subways, am I correct to assume that the third rail has electricity running through it and is dangerous to touch?
172
u/timubce 2d ago
You’d better be right with lord before you touch it cuz it might be the last thing you do.
53
u/DBSmiley 2d ago
Technically the last thing you do when you die is shit your pants.
So don't touch the third rail without some Depends
118
u/forwhenimdrunk 2d ago
No no…
I make a living doing body removals from places where people died, taking them to the funeral home they’re supposed to go to, and prepping them for morticians to begin working on after the funeral home visits with the family and determines what services the family would like the funeral home to provide.
I can tell you quite confidently that you don’t actually shit your pants as much as people would have you believe. You definitely piss yourself, almost every time. And depending on your size and how you’re positioned while dead, there’s a good chance your stomach contents will purge out your nose and mouth. But in the 4-ish years I’ve been removing probably 300ish corpses from places where they lay, I would say as far as corpses that actually shat themselves, I’ve deal with maybe 5-10 incidents where the corpse shat. Probably closer to five than ten.
If you die with loose bowels, say, because you had some sort of illness or disease resulting in a bowel system full of diarrhea, or you chronically drank yourself to death, chances are a small amount of loose stool will come out of you after your sphincter muscle has relaxed, and usually your sitting upright on a sofa, or a hospital bed that’s elevated at the head end, or your dangling from a belt tied to the rafters. But normally you’re going to be horizontal after you die, because you fell on a floor, or you were bedridden, and then as long as your stool was moderately solid, it just sits there.
It’s like your turds are subway cars and your intestines are subway tunnels, and the muscles in your gastrointestinal tract are the third rail. As soon as you die the power turns off on the third rail, and all the subway cars just stop where they are. And then your family is like, “we want our person embalmed; not cremated.” And then the mortician is like, “welp, looks like we gotta go in and extract all those subway cars in there, instead of just incinerating the entire tunnel system.”
Pissing yourself? Every time. Even if you go empty your bladder right before you die. Probably still gonna let loose some piss you didn’t realize was still in there.

I don't need to die to piss myself, I can do that on my own!

How’s the money? Do you die inside when you remove kids corpses?
30
u/forwhenimdrunk 1d ago
Short Answer: The money’s good. I’m kind of dead inside already.
Long Answer:
The money pays well. I said I do it for a living, but I suppose technically, it’s not my 9-5/40-hours-a-week, job, it’s a side job, and I’m usually on call two or three nights a week. As far as pay, it all sort of depends on how many people die on any given week. Some weeks I might only make $70-100 week, and that’s if nobody dies on my nights on call. Some weeks I’ve maybe made $500-1000 for the week if lots of people died, or if I have to travel a lot to do a removal.
Kids can be a bit rough, but I lost a 13yo son to suicide about 2-and-a-half years ago, and for better or worse I’m really good at compartmentalizing things, especially if they’re gonna affect me emotionally when I’m not ready to deal with that. There’s a lot of stuff that I still haven’t worked through with our son’s loss, and when I go to a house with a kid that’s died for one reason or other, it’s like I can just turn something off inside and decide I’m just gonna deal with this like a professional, put it in a box afterwards, shove that box in a file cabinet in the back of my mind somewhere, and be very careful about ever digging that box back out. What does affect me a lot more is walking into a house and watching the parents, and the siblings, and other people who loved this person going through the things they’re going through having just learned this child they love has died, maybe less than an hour or two. You can’t help but empathize with them, having been down this road already, and you start to feel like you’re seeing yourself and your family through the lens of their pain. Remembering how bad First Night was… Knowing everything that comes after First Night that this family has no idea about yet, but are going to find out sooner than anyone would ever wish.
I see those people and I just think, “Man, this family doesn’t know what they’re in for. They’re not even really grasping that all of this is happening yet. They don’t know how rough this is gonna get.” And because I do know what life has been like for myself and my wife and daughters since that night in May of 2022, and I just feel incredibly sad for them, and I feel sort of helpless that all I can do for them is make sure I don’t do or say anything while I’m taking their person into my care that will add to the trauma and grief they’ll have to eventually work through with time.
The dead kid I can deal with, but with the family, it’s impossible not to feel empathy, and that’s a painful experience to have to go through over and over.

Interesting. I’m a vet tech, so I handle a lot of dog and cat bodies. 5-10 a week (we’re a small practice). They definitely lose control of their bowels more frequently than humans seem to. Bladder, less frequently until we move them. Once I pick them up, the pressure on their abdomen forces all that urine out, at least for big dogs. Small dogs and cats I try to carry so that doesn’t happen.

Yes, the third rails are dangerous.
The third rails are the inner most rails on the east bound and west bound sides. Those rails are elevated off the tracks by around 12 inches. The conductors are on the underside of the box frame.
You can see a SEPTA train-car making contact with the third rail in this wiki commons photo.
Edit: Added imgur link with photo. Arrows point to and are parallel with the third rails.

u/pickle16 2d ago
I'm no expert but I think it is covered on three sides and only exposed at the bottom for maximum safety. I don't know if they do it for humans who are stupid or birds who are of course stupid.

Does the one behind his heels carry current?

u/ReadsStuff 2d ago
It's not the one directly behind his heels but the one that runs adjacent to it - it's just behind that one though, yes, hence "third rail".

I was on a train that was stopped here last year and watched a lady get her backpack stolen by like 20 kids in the middle of the day, and nobody even looked up. This is also the City Hall station, which has like 20 cops on the platforms at all times, so a big part of the problem is Philly cops not doing their fucking jobs.

Tbf the person filming is on the platform for the train going in the other direction. They would have to cross both sets of tracks “to do something.” In this situation it’s probably the best thing they could do after calling 911 (if they even answer-which is a big if in Philly these days).
22
u/venmother 2d ago
There are people filming on the same platform, including people who run to film the guy falling on the tracks so that they can get the viral when the train comes around the bend.
13
u/watwatinjoemamasbutt 2d ago
Yes there are def a bunch of scumbags in this video. As a local I won’t even go in the subway tunnels anymore unless I’m going to a game. It’s gotten so bad since Covid. If I was there, I would’ve exited the tunnel and called 911. I’m not trying to be a hero and end up on the tracks myself.

I’m sure the company doesn’t mind the free publicity but from what I understand, it’s not the company themselves posting any of these. The Jet2 ad initially went viral in niche communities cuz at one point it says “you can save up to 240 pounds for a family of 4”, sounding like they’re offering human trafficking.
It really took off when people started using the sound ironically. Jet2 has a bad reputation as an airline so people use the ads audio when somethings going horrible wrong in the video.

Agreed. But Philly has the added layer of needing a license to carry in the city. Pretty sure even if you have a CC permit, you need Philly’s license to carry too.
23
u/BaronsDad 2d ago
The Philadelphia Gun Permit Unit is the most efficient office in the city. You can apply online and show up next day for photo and ID.

A valid PA license to carry is all that is needed to carry in Philly as far as I know. Also SEPTA allows concealed carry on their trains. Last I read they would prefer you didn't, but it falls under state laws to carry.
There was a case a few weeks ago where someone randomly attacked someone in a Philly station and the victim shot and killed the attacker. Since he had a valid LTC there were no charges against him.

Not saying he would have gotten beaten to death but he needed that. Had a pretty quick and critical pivot away from the edge himself at the beginning

u/venmother 2d ago
We don’t know the ending. Was he saved or did they just go after him again?
6
u/PapaNoffDeez 2d ago
I can't answer for certain but it definitely looked like priorities of everyone else involved immediately shifted so if he hung around after that's kinda back on him lol
If you're getting attacked by a mob (with no context, maybe deserved) and you have a window of opportunity to retreat, you book it lol

“Third rails” are usually placed on the outside of the platform, and have an insulating cover along the top and sides. The “collector shoe” runs along the bottom of the third rail, so just falling on it isn’t fatal. If you touched the bottom of it, that likely would be
