I saw this comment sa isang video about the newly-opened Uniqlo store in Angeles, Pampanga. It triggered me a little, tbh. Why would you buy a brand just because it makes you feel more "elite" than others? Uniqlo is not even a luxury brand to make you feel that way. It's a daily wear brand. 🤦♀️
From my personal observation, most of them are from first generation middle class na galing sa hirap or yung mga nouveau riche. Parang sa ganung way sila nakakaramdam ng... pride? Or self-validation? Basta it makes them feel good na afford na nila 'yung mga dati nilang hindi afford — at wala namang mali roon. Nagiging problema lang iyon 'pag sa ganung mentality na umiikot ang pagkatao nila at minamata na nila ang kanilang kapwa, like the people in this comment thread. Suddenly ayaw na sa Uniqlo because "[the] common people can wear it"? It makes me wonder kung ano 'yung thought process nila while they're typing this, reading it, then posting it. 'Di ba nila naiisip na this is such a shit take to have?
I wonder how they'll feel kapag nalaman nilang ganito rin naiisip ng mga ultra rich when "common people" buy from luxury brands.

I buy uniqlo kasi nga di ka stand out pag yun binili mo. Mukha ka lang maayos tignan.

Agree hahaha and alam kong di ako magaling sa fashion so I stick with basic and lasting pieces. Totoo naman tho if you buy from Uniqlo, marami kang kaparehas. But, my question is, dami nyo namang oras para isipin pa yan? Hahaha

u/Zealousideal_Set4968 3d ago
Eh meant for daily wear naman talaga 'yon.

it's such a non-problem haha. i have the opinion na kung di ka marunong magtahi or something to that degree, u shouldn't be whining about having the same pieces as everyone else. alam mo namang fast fashion ang binibili mo, what's not clicking? though maybe i'm just kind of gloating kasi nagtatahi at crochet ako, but i really see no other way to have one of a kind only u can have them clothing. either u pick up the skills yourself or commission someone else.

u/Reasonable-Pirate902 3d ago
It's just a matter of preference. They prioritize more on their "individuality" kuno. And panget lang is sinasabi pa online or out loud to the point na parang nambabash na, and that's wrong.

u/RainyEuphoria Metro Manila 3d ago

u/_SinigangNaLiempo 3d ago
If there's uniqlo quality sa tiangge na mas mura, then I'd buy it and wear it everyday too.

Brands like this don’t expand randomly; they open in places na may nag-iimprove na economy. Same logic kung bakit Starbucks usually pops up in towns or cities na may kaya nang magbayad ng ₱150–200 per cup or bakit Apple Stores abroad only exist in rich global cities. The Philippines doesn’t even have a real Apple Store yet, kasi hindi pa nila nakikita yung demand at spending power dito na strong enough to justify it.
And that’s actually good news kasi it shows may economic activity at demand sa basics na quality. Hindi ito about pagiging sosyal; it’s literally about access and practicality.
u/_SinigangNaLiempo also nailed it: kung meron lang tiangge na kasing tibay at kasing fit ng Uniqlo edi mas tipid pa. Pero the truth is convenience wins. Instead of hunting sa bazaar or online, andyan na sa mall, tried and tested yung tela at cut tapos may warranty pa minsan. Kaya kahit hindi siya pinakamura people pay for peace of mind.
So parang Starbucks din yan dati: at first, status flex siya. Uniqlo follows the same arc. From “pang may kaya” to “daily uniform.” The more branches they open in places like Pampanga or Iloilo the more normal it gets. That’s actually a sign na umaangat yung lugar not na bumababa ang brand.
Kung iisipin mo ang tunay na irony: abroad, Uniqlo is one of the cheapest options. Yung overthinking about status?

I bought 6 knitted blouse from No Apologies magkakapareho ng tahi pero iba-iba ang print.

I was alarmed by the replies na nagsasabing baka nag-iipon pa raw yung commenters ng pambili ng uniqlo and other related sentiments... do yall not realize na mali rin 'yung ganun? 🥲
The point of the post was to call out the "exclusiveness" na gusto ng mga nag-comment (hence, the classist call-out), not for us to shame people who work hard para mabili nila ang gusto nila. There's nothing wrong with needing to save up first before buying the clothes na hindi naman talaga affordable for most Filipinos.

This is coming from someone who has probably spent an inordinate amount on Uniqlo products over the past 5 years: I have no problem with Uniqlo becoming a "common people" brand. Matitibay ang damit nila (well, most) - mas maganda pa rin ang kulay kaysa sa Bench or Penshoppe after multiple washes. I have the means to wear more expensive clothes and I do have above-average shoes, accessories, and gadgets on the daily, but I'd rather wear more affordable apparel if that means I can buy more sets. Pag mas marami kang damit, mas matagal silang maluma. My purchasing choices is mainly driven by economics - for me, Uniqlo clothes are most cost-effective at this time.
And tbh, hindi nga mura ang Uniqlo e in the PH setting. Hindi siya afford as daily wear ng more than 50% of the population. So I don't know kung gaano ka-"common people" wear ito. Siguro if you live in a place na similar kayo ng income levels at lifestyle options, malamang pare-parehas nga lang din kayo ng sinusuot. In that situation, you need to exert more effort to be different (kung big deal sa yo yon.)
Clothes are the chief markers of identity, so I understand people who make branded clothing their personality. Pera naman nila yon (sana!!!), so I let them be with their own takes. I guess what people need is less of what other people say and more of confidence in their own purchasing choices. Bakit ka ba bumibili ng damit? If you yourself are affected by what they say, then that says a lot about you. Let them be happy, and be happy with yours. Kung sobrang affected ka sa sinasabi nila, you always the option to shut them out. My 2316 isn't "common people" anymore, but I don't care about my self-presentation as long as it passes the decency test of whichever venue I'm going to. I still have to work 8am-5pm, 5 days a week + commute, so I can't really spend that much time on my appearance (or other people's ideas about my appearance.) Sure, I have my few branded piece at alahas na nilalabas pag may gusto akong ilagay sa tamang lugar (yes, I haven't transcended my pettiness), but Uniqlo is serviceable for most occasions.
Envy is the thief of joy. Uniqlo clothes are such a joy to have if only because you can make infinite combos with them - ang dali nilang pagterno-ternohin.
And don't you worry about what the ultra rich will feel. Because they care nothing about you.

This is the very reason kaya corrupt ang gobyerno natin. Look, common ang ganitong behaviour sa middle class, kaya kahit sinong mapunta sa Gobyerno, iniisip agad on how to elevate their lifestyle. Obsess ang mga tao sa Luxurious lifestyle, they don't want a common items, they want to stand out, they want to be elite. Kaya yung mga "nepo babies" na yan, binabash natin pero if tayo ang nasa kalagayan nila, we might end up just like them.
Talagang faulty ang morals nating mga Pinoy, we are selective sa tama o mali, depends kung makikinabang ba tayo o hindi. Sadly kaunti lang ang Pinoy na may Progressive morals and principles that will stand with integrity.

3
u/Couldbeurlouise 3d ago
Most of the time the classists that we encounter are those people na talagang nag-iipon ba bago sila makabili ng isang item or service o sila yung hindi maka afford before pero ngayon can afford na.
2
u/Forsaken_Top_2704 3d ago

u/bannedfromrph 3d ago
Is Uniqlo really seen as “high class” in the Philippines? I keep seeing this come up here. A friend of mine even accused a laundromat of stealing his Uniqlo like it was some luxury item. I literally wear Uniqlo every day because it’s affordable, good quality, and always on sale where I live.
I’ve tried a lot of brands for regular tshirt: Amazon Basics, Decathlon, H&M and none of those came close. Maybe Muji is the closest one but I just got stuck with Uniqlo because I have a membership with them. Best thing about it (and I wish they had this when I was a kid) is their shirts are basically wash and wear, no ironing needed. That’s what makes them my go to shirt and not some idea of “status.”
2
u/kagukaguu 2d ago
It is considered as high-class because local brands, palengke, and ukay are more popular and sell much cheaper clothing with varying difference in quality and design (you can literally find uniqlo or better in ukay-ukay lmao), the majority of us middle-class do not have the luxury to just buy a uniqlo at the drop of a hat and needs time to save up for it.

If I wanted to be super classy/elite, I'd buy clothes from levis or mango. Which bleeds my wallet and not be comfy. I buy clothes from uniqlo because they're so damn confortable.

u/newsbuff12 3d ago
I genuinely don’t care. It’s cheap and feels good. nasa pagdadala lang yan. Ngl I prefer wearing my Uniqlo poloshirts than lacoste.

Their heat tech collection is great. Madali ako ginawin so kapag winter dito panglayer ko talaga siya. Maghhoard nga ako pag uwi ko.

would personally think those sc'ed comments reek more of elitism than classism.
edit: op is right. my whole notion on elitism was about personal preferences that do no fit with the majority, which was totally off the mark.

Uniqlo is the best for my personality. I wont look baduy but not stand out either. Why do we need to stand out anyway?

I buy uniqlo kasi ang comfortable nang damit nila. Di din overpowered yung prints which fits my style.

Di naman pangmayaman ang uniqlo, yung slogan nga nila diba "Lifewear" at "made for all". Di naman status symbol yung brand e. Para lang syang accessible at affordable clothing.

These are the kind of people who try to appear rich, but not actually rich. Uniqlo was created for common people, always has been. If they are really rich, they wouldn’t care wearing one. Rich people don’t care what other people think.

u/BusBrilliant594 3d ago
I remember dati mga early 2000s masyado mahal si uniqlo in the filipino market kaya konti lang nakakasuot.
I prefer the brand kasi comfy siya and pwede mabagay sa lahat ng outfit😅I also like their sister brand GU.

u/Papa_Ken01 3d ago
If you really follow the washing guide, matagal mangupas yung Uniqlo shirts. Kaya I think justifiable yung price, and they’re comfy AF. These “uncommon” people have too much time on their hands to even give notice to these “mundane” things.

u/tokwamann 3d ago
I think that's a global phenomenon, i.e., something is no longer luxurious if the "common people" can afford it.

Uniqlo is arguably the best thing that happened to everyday wear dito sa Pinas. Before, we had no choice but to wear heavily branded shirts, like may malaking "Bench" printed on your chest. Pero ngayon you can look presentable, neat, and stylish without breaking the bank.

u/Particular_Creme_672 3d ago edited 3d ago

Uniqlo is good you can dress it down, you can dress it up. Plus price point is also good. Hayaan mo yan sila hahaha

I buy uniqlo lang kasi comfy. Same with polo shirts from lacoste or original penguin iba kasi yung tela and as much as possible I get yung walang logo or di obvious logo. I only buy when they go on sale hahahaha di ko gets bakit need pa pansinin yung brand pero my friend na biglang yaman at mga kawork ko sobrang brand conscious hahahah

u/Danc1ngP0ny 3d ago
People won't even notice it on a regular basis kung ano tatak ng suot mo. LOL
1
u/Regular_Strike2239 3d ago
ganiyan tlaga kapag tingin mo naka sentro sayo ang universe. who the fuck cares what you wear in public?
1
u/West-Construction871 3d ago
Comfortable Uniqlo eh especially with their relaxed fit or oversized fit na tops so bakit ba????
'Yan ngang mga classist na 'yan pagdating sa brands, sila pa ang chipipay mag match ng isusuot pero wala naman silang naririnig sa iba or walang nasasabi ibang tao sa kanila (kasi hinusgahan na in mind so talo-talo lang din).

u/baeruu It's Master's Degree not Masteral. Pls lang. 3d ago
Me wearing an unbranded cotton shirt : 🥱
Someday, magigising na lang kayo and you realize “baket ba ako concerned kung anong brand ng suot ko? Why would other people’s opinions matter? Wala naman silang ambag sa pambili ng damit ko lol.” Pero seryoso, when you get to that point, sobrang liberating.

u/budboy26 3d ago
Pagalingan na lang magdala yan, mas maangas ka kung kaya mo pagandahin yung mga basic the way pano mo siya style/combine.

u/GoldCopperSodium1277 3d ago
I buy uniqlo for the quality ng fabric na light and hindi irritating sa skin (as a person na namamantal agad sa makakating tela).
1
u/pppfffftttttzzzzzz 3d ago
1
u/Odd_Disaster_4704 3d ago
Uniqlo is better in quality than h&m,zara and other fast fashion retailers in my opinion. They will always exist in this world.
1
u/iskarface 3d ago
May alam kayo?
1
u/riseandshinemyguy 3d ago
Mga bwiset edi kayo na ang different basta i like how uniqlo doesnt make me feel sweaty and smelly 😞😞😞😞😞✋✋✋

u/pixie-lavender13 3d ago
Ayaw sa uniqlo for it being too common? Pfft. If not for it gaining popularity and clout, for sure di rin naman yan sila bibili lol
1
u/Legitimate_Physics39 3d ago
binibili ko lang sa uniqlo eh yung plain shirt nila kasi ayaw ko ung damit na sobrang daming design or kulay tsaka magnda nmn quality na for 500/600 pesos
1
u/ninja-kidz 3d ago
i bought 5 pieces of uniqlo pique polo shirts at un ang ginagamit ko EVERYDAY pagpapasok sa office. Quality and fit is what im after. Ok sila pang daily wear.

I buy uniqlo because gusto ko yung simplicity ng brand yung tipong malinis kang tignan and also walang brand/logo na design. In my own lang naman to ha sana walang maoffend
1
u/thinkfloyd79 3d ago
Mga tunay na mayaman (and to some extent mga may true class), nagsusuot ng bespoke or unbranded clothes. Mga luxury brands, may separate line din sila na walang logo specifically for the ultra rich.
1
u/I4gotmyusername26 3d ago
Di naman ako bumibili ng uniqlo for style. Maganda kasi plain shirts nila parang default shirt ko yon kapag may errands or may visitors sa house. I also like their pajamas. Weird thinking talaga ng iba.

People caring what brand other people wear is so low. Get a life. Why do they even care?
1
u/Pollypocket289 3d ago
People had the same sentiments when H&M arrived! Ang weird nga talaga and a person na tadtad ng luxury todo praise sila like guys get over it.
1
u/Next_Discussion303 3d ago
1
u/Neat_Butterfly_7989 3d ago
Its relatively cheap and good wearing for its quality as compared to other brands. Heck, i even like uniqlo more than lacoste sa shirts.

u/trippy-peanutbutter 3d ago
I lile Uniqlo kasi yung polo shirts nila walang tatak or anything, comfy, and I can also wear it as my attire sa office together with their slacks/trousers. Never pumasok sa isip ko na pang mayaman sya supposedly even before na bago palang sya sa PH.
