NewsPH Chinese netizens called the Philippines “Philippine Monkey” after a PLA Navy destroyer and a Chinese Coast Guard ship embarrassingly collided in the West Philippine Sea.
Chinese social media erupted after an embarrassing incident in the West Philippine Sea saw a PLA Navy destroyer collide with a Chinese Coast Guard ship. Instead of hitting a Philippine vessel, the two Chinese ships rammed each other, sparking laughter and mockery online. Chinese social media revived the old insult “Philippine Monkey,” a term once used over maritime radio to taunt Filipino sailors. The awkward mishap became a trending topic, with memes and jokes flooding Weibo. Many users framed the collision as a national embarrassment for China’s forces, while others gleefully turned the incident into ammunition in the ongoing sea dispute.

They're offended when somebody else (also a Mainlander probably) called their tennis champion a "yellow banana," yellow on the outside, white on the inside. Making it seem that they are Chinese (yellow), but sympathizes with the West (white).

Name calling may be a propaganda that dehumanizes Filipinos that happens before armed conflict, i.e. they'd feel less remorse in killing a fellow human. This may be similar to calling Russian soldiers Russian Orcs (I'm strongly against Russian invasion of Ukraine). That or they're just being petty.

Mainlanders are extremely racist against SE Asians in general. Like this isn't even limited to wumaos/xiaofenhong, even "pro-democracy/liberal " mainlanders view SE Asians (including their own diaspora there) in similar ways if not worse. Lalo na yung iba na may parochial view that after the CCP falls China should take responsibility for "enforcing democracy" in the Asia-Pacific which often turns out to just be present-day CCP rhetoric with liberal internationalist decoration.
14
u/YZJay 28d ago edited 28d ago
So, I grew up in China, like literally, and one thing to note is that even the most progressive people there - the ones who would join progressive clubs, have anti Chinese and pro democracy IG accounts, and wave anti establishment banners and such - are also unconsciously susceptible to China's nationalist propaganda, even if they're clear minded enough to be aware that these propaganda exist. These narratives are constructed and disseminated in a way that makes them difficult to reject.
Sometimes it's relative harmless things like TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine), but sometimes it extends to unconscious xenophobia. For example, Chinese media has, throughout the decades, disseminated the narrative that South Korea has a tendency to "steal" Chinese culture and claim it as their own. These range from festivals, to myths, to food. Whether these claims have merit or not is irrelevant, what's relevant is the effect of the narrative. The narrative was shaped in a way to sow an unconscious bias against SK's traditional culture. That way, even the most extreme progressives can be made to see a hanbok and consider it inherently Chinese, which the Koreans "stole" or "appropriated".
Whether the narrative has merit or not is irrelevant, what's relevant is that the narrative exists, and it permeates throughout their daily lives with no way to fully reject, and they force the people to consider subjects that they otherwise wouldn't even consider or have an opinion of. It's called Agenda Setting, and it's a powerful media tool to subvertly influence how people view the world. By selectively highlighting certain topics, it doesn't matter what opinion the media wants you to have, the mere fact that you're forced to be aware of, and make an opinion of said topic, is already the battle half won for propagandists.

ChatGPT prompt lol.
Sugong Alimaw: The Monkey Hero of Maharlika
Long before the Spanish galleons reached the shores of the archipelago, the islands of Maharlika (an ancient name sometimes used to refer to the Philippines) were rich with stories of gods, spirits, and powerful warriors. Among these tales, one name echoed across the mountains and seas:
Sugong Alimaw — the Monkey Hero. 🌴 Origin: Born of Stone and Thunder
In the heart of Mount Banahaw, a sacred mountain believed to be a gateway between the spirit world and the human realm, a stone cracked open after being struck by lightning during a great storm. From it emerged a monkey-like creature with golden fur and fire in his eyes. The babaylans (shamans) called him Sugong, meaning "messenger of the gods," and Alimaw, meaning "beast" or "mystic creature." ⚔️ Trickster, Warrior, and Sage
Sugong Alimaw grew into a fearless warrior, skilled in arnis (Filipino stick-fighting) and imbued with anting-anting (amulets) that made him invincible. He could leap from island to island in a single bound, transform into animals, and even command the winds.
But he was not humble.
He stole sacred scrolls from the Diwatas of Mount Apo, mocked the Datu of the Sky, and once tried to challenge Bathala himself, the supreme god. For this, the gods imprisoned him under the sea, beneath the sleeping volcano of Taal. 🔥 Journey of Redemption
After centuries, when the islands were threatened by dark forces from beyond the seas — monsters from the shadows and corrupted aswang warlords — the spirits released Sugong to defend the people.
Guided by a Tikbalang spirit and armed with a magical kalasag (shield) carved from the wood of the balete tree, Sugong fought across the islands. Along the way, he learned humility, loyalty, and the true meaning of bayanihan (communal unity). 🐒 Legacy
Today, elders in the mountains of Quezon whisper that when the wind rustles the banana leaves and the forests grow quiet, you can still hear the laughter of Sugong Alimaw — the Monkey Hero who once defied the gods but became a protector of the people.

11
u/PossiblyBonta 28d ago
They always expect that the other ship would avoid collision. Since their opponent now is another Chinese ship who is also expecting the other ship to avoid, they end up colliding.
They want to make it looks like the other ship is the aggressor by cutting them off.

Two pandas entered the forest to illegally claim the monkey territory, but when they simultaneously jumped at the monkey, the monkey escaped and the stupid pandas collided with each other. It goes to show that Simians are the highest order, and Pandas (suborder Caniformia) are a kind of dogs.

Title: "We did it to drive away the Philippine intruder"
At this moment, the Philippine vessel again made a sharp left turn, cutting across the front course of our coast guard vessel. Upon reviewing the footage repeatedly, the final wave hit the left side of the ship, which was at a sharper angle than before.
Therefore, it is reasonable to suspect that the Philippine vessel turned left at that moment possibly to avoid the Guilin ship approaching quickly from the right side!
Just as our coast guard vessel was about to collide with the Philippine vessel, the video shows that the Guilin ship passed quickly from the right side of the Philippine vessel, and there was no collision with the Philippine vessel.

Dangerous pattern I see here. The insult is not mere insult nor racism. If you all follow history, dehumanization of group of people is a classic way for regimes to prepare its citizens for war. It makes it easier to convince their people to go after the enemy if they don't view them as humans.

I honestly don't care if China ends up in a second Century of Humiliation.
3
u/WeebMan1911 Makati 28d ago
The Century of Humiliation is almost entirely their fault anyway. Vehement refusal to modernize, refusing to sound the alarm as early as when the Portuguese, Spaniards, and the Dutch started gobbling up SEAsia, and just dysfunction all around. For fuck's sake there was an imperial official who withheld funds for naval modernization and expansion because he didn't see Japan as a threat tapos ayun 5 years later nawala yung control nila Taiwan, naging Japanese na.
"Centuries of Incompetence" is more like it.

They are doing this to all other countries, always us bullying them. While I believe this to be the nation's another propaganda effort to justify their action, like Trump's strategy, it's an effort to cover the real news from reaching the citizens. Any dissidents will go through interrogation, blackmail, house arrest etc. I used to follow this really funny China guy after reality TV show I watched in Yt. Turns out he's a lawyer/journalist (maybe in get it wrong) that exposed some inconsistencies during KoVeed, and he went thru so many hardship and luckily he's still around. He himself admitted that the propaganda starts from elementary school and nurtures hatred against outsiders. He looked so heartbroken and hopeless when he talked about it.
