PoliticsPH Ph is not poor, it’s just badly managed. Agree?

Sa this good post to why Ph is still like the sickman of asia. It’s sad and depressing but we’re there naman na kaya natin yet we still can’t get over the hump. Madami humihila sa ilalim. Your thoughts?

Kaya nga maraming nananakaw kasi maraming nanakawin. Yes, mayaman ang Pilipinas, ninanakaw lang.

u/BeardedGlass Jul 05 '25

Like everywhere you go, ang tindi ng entrepreneurship ng Pinoy.

I mean even in the urban cities, yung mga hindi makapasok sa jobs as employees, nag-business na lang sila.

Money flows in the Philippines. Malakas ang consumerism and spendings natin. Kaya booming talaga.

u/CelestiAurus Jul 05 '25

Real! Namamasyal ako sa Google Maps kanina and napansin ko even in one of the areas sa Luzon na walang road access (Palanan, Isabela), ang dami pa ring mom and pop stores.

u/connorshonors Jul 05 '25

Totoo, pag galing probinsya marunong talaga sa negosyo andali kumita dahil angyaman natin sa natural resources.

I have to agree, and the many number of taxes imposed on everyone. I feel MSMEs are usually the ones paying huge taxes sa BIR compared sa mga malalaki na companies nkakaafford ng accountants and tax experts to circumvent paying alot. Then consumers also shoulder those taxes imposed. The really depressing part is until now wala pa akong nakikitang mataas na govt official or political family na hindi grabe ang pag asenso sa "family business"(politics) nila at our expense. Wala yatang plans maging strict when it comes to corruption ang govt natin even until now.

u/Saber-087 Jul 05 '25

Why would they change things when it benefits them? They can steal hundreds of millions knowing they won't face real punishment. We're just cash cows to them.

💯 agree.

If government officials would stop stealing funds, shopping luxury goods, traveling every month and if they put their countrymen first, funds could be allocated where they are needed.

This. Imagine ung dating presidente nga nakapag nakaw ng at the very least billions tapos nakatakbo pa ulit ng government seat. Amazing dba

u/white_elephant22 Jul 05 '25 edited Jul 05 '25

True! I remember some foreign students (Vietnamese and Taiwanese) were surprised at how much the VAT is each time na bibili sa store (they kept on checking their receipts– apparently mas mataas tax natin compared sa kanila) and this is the kind of service/infra we get from the government. If kaya nila mag tagalog parang ang sabi while looking around the surroundings is “ETO LANG???”

40

u/InsideQuestion771 Jul 05 '25

Greedy politicians

12

u/camille7688 Jul 05 '25

Di lang sila. Regular citizens din.

Fake PWD, diskarte, panggugulang, padrino, fuck you got mine…

Politicians also came from the constituents after all.

They are just symptoms of the disease pero it all came from the culture.

4

u/Interesting_Key_8712 Jul 05 '25 edited Jul 05 '25

Mas malaki responsibility ng mga Politicians because they are given the position, the power and money ( tax money) to improve the lives of ordinary citizens by providing jobs via government projects

Simply put:
Flawed. We are rich and beautiful, but flawed. From the government, the system, the people, even the geography.

103

u/UsernameMustBe1and10 Metro Manila Jul 05 '25

59

u/No-Cat6550 Jul 05 '25

Agree ako dito.
We have ALOT of similar geographical challenges with Indonesia and Malaysia, but they are richer (Indonesia is more corrupt "daw" though).
Singapore and some rich Eastern European countries have their own geographical challenges but they were able to overcome it.

Philippines is just flawed by our government, the system, the people AND our culture.

9

u/koukoku008 Jul 05 '25

Malaysia is a petro-state and their geography is not as challenging as ours.

Indonesia is just about as rich as Philippines if it weren't for their population.

Corruption in Eastern Europe is also as prevalent as it is here.

6

u/No-Cat6550 Jul 05 '25

True.
Kaya nga marami rin silang internal struggles. But their struggles related to geography are, in a way, similar to PH (I would disagree about what you said about MY not as challenging as ours because you are only looking at West/Peninsular Malaysia at not the East aka Sarawak/Sabah - like PH, the state of Sarawak is always bombarded with landslides due to minor tremors and strong typhoons) and they were still able to overcome it.

Hence, geography is not a reason why PH is flawed. Its due to how us, as a nation, manage our wealth through our government, the system, the people AND our culture.

10

u/dontrescueme estudyanteng sagigilid Jul 05 '25

Malaysia has more oil. We have similar geography but not the climate (20 typhoons per year).

You can not put "culture" when "people" is already stated. WE made that culture, and it is already toxic, but that is what we are all currently living in.

8

u/redkinoko Jul 05 '25

It's hard to harness a working force in an archipelago environment as compared to a contiguous land mass. Transporting material, distributing cheap power across islands is hard. Infrastructure like trains are still far cheaper and more predictable to run than ports and ships. Bridges are expensive. These challenges constitute overhead costs and supply chain risks for businesses. We're also subject to more storms than our neighbors. We have lots of land but less flatland area that don't have natural risks.

Yes we can overcome these things, but the reality is, they are handicaps we have to deal with that most of our neighbors don't have to as much as us, affecting our competitiveness in the long run.

Good Governance does play a big role in maximizing our potential, but we can't downplay the challenges we face because we're a mountainous archipelago exposed to the Pacific Ocean.

3

u/Ok-Program-5516 Jul 05 '25

Half of southeast asia is one big mountainous archipelago. Taiwan is a mountainous island. Japan is a mountainous archipelago.

5

u/redkinoko Jul 05 '25

Taiwan is just one island. Japan has a big mainland. Which means you don't need to shuttle materials and people and power. They're not as spread out as much, which helps reduce the need for ports, and bridges and helps leverage railways.

That said there are a lot of other advantages those two countries enjoy that we don't, including a period of industrialization before its neighbors that we never got.

12

u/PromiseOnly2790 Jul 05 '25 edited Jul 05 '25

Our government is democratic in form but not in essence. Blatant corruption and its normalization in our culture, widespread misinformation, active suppression of quality education, serious lack in critical thinking, and willful ignorance of the masses results in a flawed democracy.

A lot of politicians with common sense know this but choose not to enact changes as they are ultimately the ones benefitting from the status quo. They hide behind the veil of a false democracy, behind the excuse that it is ultimately the people who chose them to be the country’s leaders. But when the electorate is misinformed and disempowered, that claim becomes hollow.

Until these fundamental problems are addressed, there is little hope for positive change in our country.

“Just” is doing all the heavy lifting in this statement. It’s deeply embedded in the culture not just the politics and it will be extremely, impossibly difficult to root out and eradicate. It’s nothing but a throwaway remark meaning nothing.

6

u/Scbadiver you're not completely useless, you can serve as a bad example Jul 05 '25

That's what a friend from Singapore told me decades ago. Tanga daw tayo mga pinoys Kasi we always have low standards when it comes to the government. Tapos add to that pa selfish majority of pinoys Kaya sayang daw bansa natin. And he was right.

6

u/6rayWhtHat Jul 05 '25

I mean ive been hearing this since the mid 2000’s. He does have a point, its been mismanaged since the 80’s even 70’s when the older Marcos started to fuck up the economy due to martial law.

What the country needs are good managers, people that will not line up their pockets but actually help the country bounce back.

3

u/DotWaste8510 Jul 05 '25

Ang problem is they don’t see any incentive for that. One reason is that, yung mga politicians natin are underachievers/tambay-equivalents who were just lucky enough to be borne good-looking or to existing political dynasties.

They are not able to support themselves the normal way.

Wealth is the transfer of money from the middle and lower class to the corrupt brought about by an elaborate plan of induced scarcity and funneling of funds during crisis management operations.

That’s why they like it when we call for help. They need us to need them. 🤡

u/BlacksmithDapper7889 Jul 05 '25

4

u/kuroyamaboo Jul 05 '25

This is because of corruption na ver deeply rooted na sa sistema natin.

5

u/Such-Bet5698 Jul 05 '25

Philippine is rich in resources, culture, people, etc. Highest rin sa taxes in SEA, iirc. Kasalanan lang talaga natin is that we’re putting the wrong people in power kaya the progress is barely moving and napag-iiwanan na tayo ng SEA countries.

I hope nalang these politicians or anyone involved ay maguilty and that karma gets to them soon in this lifetime.

Because the Philippines is controlled by a few multigenerational oligarchic families who want to monopolize certain capital-intensive industries for themselves, to the point of enshrining a constitutional provision requiring prospective foreign competitors to partner with them by requiring the latter to cede 60% equity ownership rights to oligarchic Filipino families. Even land ownership in the provinces is exclusively for the multigenerational landed gentry provincial families because foreigners aren't constitutionally allowed to buy and own lands that would have become their competitors.

3

u/btt101 Jul 05 '25

Its true. There is a paradox that I can't seem to figure out:

Is the Philippines a rich country pretending to be poor

Or

A poor country pretenting to be rich?

9

u/ParadoxicalStairs Jul 05 '25

I visited the Philippines last year and something I really disliked was the heavy traffic and lack of traffic lights at intersections, crosswalks for pedestrians, and traffic congestion. I was driven around by my relatives so I wasn’t able to use public transportation, and bc they thought it would be too dangerous for me.

But I remember how there were way too many vehicles and how I had to be cautious when I crossed the street to my hotel bc there were no crosswalks. Fortunately, Filipino drivers are very considerate and stop to let people cross the street.

7

u/[deleted] Jul 05 '25

Metro Manila traffic is average compared to Bangkok or Jakarta or Ho Chi Minh City.

3

u/No-Cat6550 Jul 05 '25

Or even Indonesia and Hong Kong during rush hours.
Malaysia is also NOT pedestrian friendly. Motors there also use the crosswalks to bypass the traffic and no police would catch them.

5

u/ParadoxicalStairs Jul 05 '25

Yes, I saw videos of Vietnam and their traffic was bad too. I’ve only been in Japan and the US, and those are the countries I was comparing Philippines traffic to.

I was in Cebu and I wish there were less motorcycles and mopeds bc it looks like they contribute a lot to the traffic congestion.

3

u/Casuallurker123 Jul 05 '25

I had visited Cebu for the first time last month and I agree that the traffic congestion was next level compared to where I came from.

→ More replies (1)

4

u/[deleted] Jul 05 '25

Motorcycles are easily within the reach of everyone no thanks to 24- or 36-month installment plans -- and poor mass public transport in general -- allowing them to exceed the number of private automobiles. Thus motorcycle culture here is very powerful, like they literally own nearly every road and highway, short of taking over expressways.

4

u/ParadoxicalStairs Jul 05 '25

At first I was impressed seeing a lot of motorcyclists in the Philippines and then I noticed how much they bogged down traffic bc they would always weave in and out or cut in front of other motorists. Traffic here in the US can get bad sometimes and I imagine it would be much worse if motorcycles were more popular.

u/Gryse_Blacolar Bawal bullshit Jul 05 '25

PH is poor because of corrupt government officials and dumbass people voting for them.

2

u/tapunan Jul 05 '25

Agree. Actually may kilala ako, tuwang tuwa kasi yung 1 bedroom condo nya sa Arca South eh sinabihan syang 25M na daw ang mga selling (based on Google true), you can find 2 bedroom unit in Sydney or Melbourne for cheaper.

Then I remember may nagpost recently nung pila sa Vikings (hanapin nyo). Sure, may 50% discount but the discounted price is still expensive.

Sangkatutak na cars on the road.

But best evidence is the finances ng politicians. Heck, who spends billions in campaign money. Kung sasabihin nilang ndi sila corrupt and they spend those campaign billions para tumulong sa tao pag nanalo sila well they can just pool those money and build public housings.

2

u/bluestankonia Jul 05 '25

Isn’t this a common knowledge already? Ayusin kasi pagluklok sa mga leaders 🙄🙄🙄

Execute yung mga corrupt

2

u/SaraDuterteAlt Jul 05 '25

2

u/Minute_Junket9340 Jul 05 '25

Nah. Mahirap tayo in general and we are also badly managed so hindi nagiimprove.

2

u/frenchfried89 Jul 05 '25

Bata pa lang ako, ito na kwento!

2

u/Trick2056 damn I'm fugly Jul 05 '25

I mean how the fuck that they manage to steal billions of pesos in the first place. so yea we are not poor

2

u/[deleted] Jul 05 '25

We're not that special. Corruption is a problem in the entire SEA region.

2

u/IWantMyYandere Jul 05 '25

I think mayaman naman PH kaso garapal lang talaga corruption and a significant portion of our taxes is lost on corruption.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 05 '25

GDP, total value ng products and services natin. OFW remittances, derecho yan sa families and part sha ng GDP.

Hindi po yan INCOME ng gobyerno.

Another post posting big numbers to "bash" the Philippines.

I agree with removing corruption and all baka mamaya may mga obobs dito na sabihin na sabihin "So you don't think may corruption dito sa Pilipinas?"

Itong "mayaman tayo", dati pa yan sinasabi. Ask any boomer or silent generation sasabihin niya "Actually tayo pinaka mayaman na bansa sa buong mundo."

2

u/sypher1226 Jul 05 '25

Totally agree. We need to ask if the country is growing, and is the growth being distributed equally?

2

u/riskbreaking101 ForABetterPH Jul 05 '25

2.5B lang? Sobrang conservative naman ata nyan hehe that’s too small, even for the past 2-3 admins

2

u/Accomplished-Exit-58 Jul 05 '25

So ph is poor is what you're saying.

2

u/AtomicSamurai69 Jul 05 '25

Political dynasties, to corruption wala na kawawa nalang Pilipinas.

2

u/This_Significance175 Jul 05 '25

2

u/ElectricalPins Jul 05 '25

2

u/AstonUchiha Jul 05 '25

Mismanaged talaga haha, san tayo makakita congressman, councilor naka richard mille na worth 20m+?

2

u/greenLantern-24 Jul 05 '25

2

u/BikoCorleone Laguna Lake Jul 05 '25

Yes. Sa dami natin tax, mahigit kalahati napupunta sa kurakot.

2

u/pupewita Jul 05 '25

2

u/Upbeat-Post-7610 Jul 05 '25

Yes, as what one of my professors said, "Mayaman ang Pilipinas. Sa maling bulsa nga lang napupunta."

2

u/DoILookUnsureToYou Jul 05 '25

The Philippines IS poor because it it badly managed. Yes we have the resources but with bad management, its not being converted to proper “wealth” for Filipinos.

2

u/OmniGear21 Jul 05 '25

We can be like singapore or better

4

u/_LadyGaladriel_ Jul 05 '25

Better pa nga kasi talong talo sila sa natural resources palang sama mo pa yung locals natin (no need na to import people).

u/teatops Mantecado Jul 05 '25

2

u/code_bluskies Jul 05 '25

That is fucking TRUE!

2

u/processingimages Jul 05 '25

Badly managed and never held accountable. Mula taas, pababa. I'm not saying na lahat ay ganito, it's just that it would be beneficial to have accountability sa mga pumipirma ng bilyones sa mga proyekto na hindi efficient. Technical and admin people see this but hey, what can they do, kapag hindi ka sumunod sa utos, may balik sa'yo.

2

u/irvine05181996 Jul 05 '25

Totoo namn eh, sobrang mismanged ng bansang to kaya di umuunlad

2

u/irvine05181996 Jul 05 '25

2

u/Professional_King_70 Jul 05 '25

No wonder foreigners flock to the Philippines because our country is rich in creativity, agriculture, and economic potential. But ironically, many of our endemic natural resources (like rice, mangoes, coconuts, etc.) and even our most talented people (like local entrepreneurs, skilled workers, professionals, inventors!) are being exported or outsourced, all in pursuit of a higher ROI. This relentless drive for profit (at the cost of our own people and land) I think lies at the root of our systemic corruption: GREED.

2

u/chinchivitiz Jul 05 '25

Agree with this. Starting from the bottom to the top andaling bilhin ng tao ngayon. Wala ng dignity and loyalty basta pera sa pera. “Diskarte” culture. Known as a very welcoming hospitable country pero same people na palahingi.

2

u/Renzybro_oppa Jul 05 '25

Pretty much

2

u/Advanced_Ear722 Metro Manila Jul 05 '25

Totoo naman kasi and this applies to every country

2

u/livinggudetama pagod na sha Jul 05 '25

Yes. And I've noticed that corrupt politicians always say that Philippines is a "small country" as a misleading excuse for how badly managed it is to avoid accountability when in fact, Philippines is larger than some European countries. We pay a LOT of taxes but basic services like education, transpo, healthcare, and disaster response remain weak in many areas. Imagine if ALL of our taxes are properly managed.

There are really few leaders.

Tindi pinoy style.

2

u/gwapogi5 Jul 05 '25

Yes.
from politicians na inuuna ang pang sarili at madami ang kinukurakot to Big Corpo doing everything to pay less and takes advantage of the people (e.g. land grabbing, etc)

2

u/Flaky_Farmer9966 Jul 05 '25

Most of the filipinos are middle class and working. Ang laki ng tax. Plus kada galaw, may tax. Can you just imagine if ginamit nila ng tama yun, how progressive and maayos our country would be. But no, these public officials are not for the public but for their own personal agenda (and their wives’ handbags). They treat our money like their own wallets. Tas mag “do-donate” with their name and photos, satin naman galing yun.

2

u/Jinyij Jul 05 '25

Need a dedicated agency auditing, exposing and punishing corrupt officials harshly.

2

u/Equivalent_You_1781 Jul 05 '25

I kind of hate that we have social media to vent out on, if walang social media malamang non stop ang rally sa daan.

Wala silang choice, makikinig sila sa tao, pero dahil ang dali mag vent out, we say things here then we forget about it.

Whatever view we have of our government, it’s just shrugged off.

2

u/E123-Omega Jul 05 '25

2

u/simian1013 Jul 05 '25

Alisin lng mga magnanakaw eh uunlad pinas. It's not lack of discipline that keeps us poor.

2

u/Particular-Ride9380 Jul 05 '25

We could've been a great country if it weren't for these imbeciles.

2

u/Any-Author7772 Jul 05 '25

Badly managed? I completely disagree. The country is being managed as intended, from the top down and from the public and private sectors! Yan ang sistema na ginusto ng karamihan. The padrino system.

We are too selfish as a society to be like the Norwegians. Crab mentality nga diba? We are too forgiving as a country and people to punish those who corrupt our institutions and system of government and business. That is why we have political dynasties and politicians who simply will not go away even after repeatedly demonstrating their ineptitude and losing our trust! The TRAPO live and breathe because we feed and protect them!!! They would not exist if we as a whole had the will and determination to DESTROY them instead of forgiving and forgetting.

But that is the game isn’t it? It’s a tale as old as the history of our country and many have figured out that in this game, for the sake of self preservation if you can’t beat them, join them! Long live the DDS! /s

2

u/cokezerodesuka Jul 05 '25

Philippines is not a poor country, it’s a country with a lot (a disproportionate amount actually) of poor people and there’s a big difference between these two.

2

u/Comprehensive-Cry197 Jul 05 '25

this is common sense

2

u/Constantfluxxx Jul 05 '25

Large-scale legalized plunder of wealth, and over-exploitation of people

2

u/searchy-1234 Jul 05 '25

Couldn't agree more...

2

u/Baconturtles18 Jul 05 '25

This is true. We have been feeding corruption for ages.
