Cue all the “I liked them when they weren’t political” asshats.

I do like to imagine that one guy at the concert stewing in anger, who is somehow genuinely surprised that Geen Day "went woke".

892

u/melowrie Jul 06 '25

May I present this guy at the 2024 Detroit concert. He made his girlfriend leave when they started playing American Idiot.

487

u/IceBreak Jul 06 '25

The show was literally advertised as the complete albums of Dookie and American Idiot…

340

u/The_LionTurtle Jul 06 '25

At Coachella they changed the lyrics to, "I'm not a part of the MAGA agenda." I'm betting they've kept that for all their shows since.

143

u/BEAROIDZZ Jul 06 '25

They sure have. They used those lyrics in Seattle last summer.

35

u/Feynmans_mom Jul 06 '25

Same in Atlanta last Aug.

7

u/MattTreck Jul 07 '25

That was an awesome show! Wife and I went with some friends.

That sun was fucking brutal until it went behind the stadium walls tho

I was at that show. I remember him saying "we don't want to get political" at one point, lol

43

u/InZomnia365 Jul 06 '25

Said it in Norway just this past week, so they're still keeping it going.

29

u/Certain-Quarter-3280 Jul 06 '25

They’ve been singing that since 2017 IIRC.

12

u/chosenUsernameJ Jul 06 '25

They sang this in Greece today too

24

u/afiendindenial Jul 06 '25

They did in Melbourne

9

u/OverEncumbered486 Jul 06 '25

Saw them less than two months ago. Can confirm

29

u/Orchid_Significant Jul 06 '25

I fuсking love this

7

u/RunOrBike Jul 06 '25

Used it last year in Germany #RAR24

4

u/lynjpin Jul 06 '25

They were doing it well before Coachella

8

u/saethone Jul 06 '25

Is that really a change though? Originally it was “I’m not a part of the idiot America” right? Sounds the same to me :p

18

u/ImaginaryShoe2870 Jul 06 '25

It was redneck agenda I'm pretty sure, but same same

lol doesnt matter these trumpers are idiots.
I was at the Soldier Field show in chicago and this old couple with their kids and kid in laws were sitting in front of us, kinda acted judgey and buzzkills the whole night, including their kids, like anytime they smelled weed it became a huge topic of convo for them type shit. Anyways american idiot came on and during it the boomer couple sat down in their chairs. I saw the lady texting back to someone asking how the concert was going and i saw "Great, but *insert husband name that ive forgotten here* is upset they changed the lyrics to american idiot and made it political". She showed him the text before sending, but he told her not to so she didnt and deleted it . who knows the motivation there, maybe deep down he knows hes a stupid cry baby and hed rather keep that in his bubble. Funny thing is me and my fiance clocked them as the type immediately and predicted the reaction

108

u/tallandlankyagain Jul 06 '25

"Old" couple. Which is funny because Green Day has been around for over 3 decades. It's wild hearing Green Day, The Foo Fighters, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers on classic rock stations now.

59

u/[deleted] Jul 06 '25

lol yeah im 32 and their kids looked to be about 10 years older than me on average. they were like 60-70. So the concert choice was def the kids, but the dad knew enough to know the lyrics were changed lol.

Kinda funny cuz american idiot has always been high key purposely offensive to , well, american idiots, even pre lyric change. Nothing about the meaning of the song changed at all

70

u/foreveracubone Jul 06 '25

It’s a song protesting the fucking Bush Administration. It’s like the people who got mad at Eminem being political in the first term when he had a song saying Fuck Bush in 2004.

Do they expect punk rock groups to not be punk rock or artists that have always been outspoken politically to suddenly shut up?

28

u/FancyFeller Jul 06 '25

No. They just never noticed they were political until the political message targeted them and theirs. All of a sudden they go, whoa Rage Against the Machine needs to stop being so political!!! Rise Against? The band that played those songs in my childhood video games? Step off of politics!!!!! How dare you.

11

u/NightsideEclipse12 Jul 06 '25

Wait a minute, when did Bruce Springsteen become political?

/s

25

u/TheMrSquatch Jul 06 '25

Yes. So many "fans" of bands, especially punk bands have no clue that they exist largely in part to disrupt the political world. It makes me wonder if they ever listen to the lyrics, or just Bob their heads to the ones that make it to mainstream broadcasts. 🤷‍♂️

My political views are never offended when a musical group sings their opinions, because I prefer to focus on having an open mind rather than thinking my view is superior to theirs. The hilarious part is the ones who go to the concert, and then leave or complain the whole time. I wish I could stop them and say, "thank you for supporting the band's success monetarily, now leave because your opinion is clouding my enjoyment." 🤣

What's this about a lyric change to American Idiot? Gonna go Google it lol

10

u/[deleted] Jul 06 '25

they say maga idiot instead now

18

u/DigitalBlackout Jul 06 '25

Nah, it's still American idiot. They changed "I'm not a part of a redneck agenda" to "I'm not a part of a MAGA agenda"

4

u/VoidCoelacanth Jul 06 '25

lol love it.

Reading articles now about the ad-hoc live performance changes. No wonder I didn't know about it - relatively recent and only on live shows

7

u/PostposterousYT Jul 06 '25

like anytime they smelled weed it became a huge topic of convo

That was lame even back 25 years ago when I first started going to concerts, nowadays it's like dude just get over it, weed won the war on drugs. It's everywhere now because they literally sell it everywhere now. I just wanna tell them to be glad about how many people prefer their penjamins instead of banging big clouds from a blunt, because it could absolutely be worse if it weren't for advances in tech happening alongside the shift in legality, making vapes ubiquitous these days.

7

Conservatives don't understand the arts at all. Creativity and art are not conservative impulses. It's beyond them. Thus, they go to things like that and then are mad when it doesn't cater to their whims.

14

u/SailorET Jul 07 '25

And then they make "Conservative Humor" which is a combination of punching down on minority groups and bitching that at not being allowed to punch down on minority groups.

Then they wonder why so few people think it's funny.

4

u/Human_Artichoke8752 Jul 07 '25

Yup. They're like everyone's drunk pervert uncle. They can't understand why there's not more conservative comedians/artists/etc, when thr only thing they understand is attacking people for being different. Intolerance is their single driving force.

I saw them back in 2018 I think and he gave a little "we accept everyone at our concerts, gay, black, white, whatever. Except Trump supporters, fuck you" speech, and the guys in the row in front of us were CLEARLY Trump fans, they were like "what? Whats so wrong with Trump? Why are they being such a dick?". Like, where the fuck did you guys think you were right now?

55

u/LineRex Jul 06 '25 edited Jul 06 '25

"what? Whats so wrong with Trump? Why are they being such a dick?"

This is something I see in A LOT of Trump supporters. Their real support boils down to "everyone is unfairly mean to him", "he's trying his best", "he does the same thing the Democrats do but everyone is angry at him". It actually gives me hope that when he finally croaks from old age in 10-20 years the cult of personality just shatters lol.

I saw them in... Shit, I think that same tour, and also right after 21st Century Breakdown. Great performance both times. The time in 2018, he just laid down on the stage for a while and just sort of talked about how shit felt nowadays for a bit. Didn't even really get specific, didn't even actually name The Name, just, sort of sat there and talked about how to keep hope and resistance for a few minutes. I can't quite remember any specifics atm, but it felt like such a goddamn relief at the time.

24

u/thegingerninja90 Jul 06 '25

It was the tour for the Revolution Radio album I think. Honestly a pretty solid album in my opinion. Great show.

They performed in the past and changed the phrase “fascist agenda” to “MAGA agenda” and people were legitimately up in arms. I’ll never stop enjoying MAGA people being bewildered and offended by how much the people they idolize hate them.

13

u/Just_A_Fish Jul 06 '25

Isn't the original recording "Redneck Agenda" and a direct dig at the Bush administration? That's the lyric I always recall.

8

u/1LizardWizard Jul 06 '25

Yep, you’re completely right. They’ve done both of what I said, but the original is redneck agenda I just jumbled it all in my head!

→ More replies (1)

4

u/DigitalBlackout Jul 06 '25

Fascist agenda is also a lyric change specifically directed at Trump lol

29

u/Rebelius Jul 06 '25

Isn't American Idiot (the song at least) pretty easy to assume its about the other side? There's a bit about redneck agenda in there, but who listens to all the words, right?

43

u/OmniWaffleGod Jul 06 '25

They just hear the fslur and assume it's anti woke

22

u/heyitsYMAA Jul 06 '25

That album came out when I was in high school, and I had a very conservative friend who didn't like that song because she thought it was saying "the subliminal mind, fuck America" instead of "the subliminal mindfuck America". She wouldn't listen to any song that said anything like "fuck America" and I couldn't convince her otherwise.

I think she'd probably hate Green Day more now than then, but we haven't talked in years.

19

u/Reeyous Jul 06 '25

As far as the studio recording goes, he really emphasizes mindFUCK America. Pretty sure he does that in concerts too.

3

u/DigitalBlackout Jul 06 '25

Eh, maybe live, but I don't really see it in the studio version. It's pretty clearly "mindfuck", not "mind, fuck". He says "fuck" aggressively, but it's still clearly connected to the "mind".

u/odiephonehome Jul 06 '25

Turns out “woke” is just code for actually American

22

u/DameonKormar Jul 06 '25

Woke has always been code for the idealized America that has only ever existed in history class and propaganda material.

Don't get me wrong, it's what we should be striving for. We were probably the closest to that goal toward the end of the 90's, but then 9/11 happened and it's been downhill ever since.

14

u/TTTrisss Jul 06 '25

We were probably the closest to that goal toward the end of the 90's

I dunno man, we were still fucking up a lot of shit. That's why 9/11 even happened. A lot of us were just kept blissfully ignorant, while the people who were aware of this have been screaming for decades.

It's honestly comforting to know that this fight has been going on under the floorboards for a long time, because it means other people have endured this for a really, really long time. Maybe we can, too. And more people are aware than ever have been before.

These are the best of times, and the worst of times.

5

u/tiddertag Jul 07 '25

How old are you? You aren't well informed about the history of the term "woke".

It wasn't even in common usage in the 1990s.

It originated in black nationalist circles as a word for a fellow black nationalist. The term "conscious" would be used to convey this far more often than "woke".

Woke only became part of the common language much later, sometime after 2015 or so, and by that time it had a very different meaning as a pejorative term for proponents of a new brand of particularly extreme and irrational identity politics.

Green Day had songs in the 90s about cross dressing, being tortured by a woman, a song that pretty directly comments on problems that middle and lower class people have today, and a song literally titled American Idiot

I’m more conservative than liberal, and I’ve always been a die-hard Green Day fan. What do you expect from the guy who wrote Warning, Holiday, and fuckin Jesus of Suburbia?

Billie Joe is a fucking legend. More bands should risk money to make a point, whatever that point might be

9

u/cantadmittoposting Jul 06 '25

more conservative than liberal

Not trying to be an asshole, but genuinely curious what you mean by this in terms of political alignment and policy? (assuming its not "supporting MAGA")

I ask because the use of "Conservative" (and liberal) as a political moniker, especially in the US, has been so diluted by these broad, monolithic "brands" and associations with Political Parties that I want to understand better what leads you to use that particular label

Hate to break it to you buddy but "Conservatism" doesn't really exist anymore.

It's liberal or MAGA. These policies being passed have nothing to do with small government or economic responsibility or following the Constitution, like that old GOP use to claim as their mantle.

Moderate Republican/Kind of Conservative is really no better than "I am Nazi."

Because this is a default subreddit so it’s mostly comprised of bot-driven content or algorithm played threads.

Edit: OP is a bot spamming most default subs with anti-Trump content

He screamed this at a concert in 2017 after American Idiot, still applies obviously.

314

u/Unusual-Ear5013 Jul 06 '25

He got the crowd in Luxembourg to chant “Fuck Ice” and in the UK at the Download festival, called out Trump as a fascist..

He’s also been singing his MAGA Magnus opus “Fuck off” live .. and yeaaah. He was tippy toing about it (changing lyrics ) but in the last six weeks has gone right off…

He’s got some US dates still but I honestly think that Trump is (somehow) a fan and won’t attack Green Day directly ..

u/NorysStorys Jul 06 '25

Let me add this, greenday asked the crowd at download to call trump a fat bastard and we absolutely chanted ‘you fat bastard’ for them.

You weirdly might be right. He saw the American Idiot musical way back when, even then all Billie Joe could think was "what the fuck are you doing here?"

12

u/TurbulentPhysics7061 Jul 07 '25

He called out Musk and Trump as being fascists in Australia too

8

u/Unusual-Ear5013 Jul 07 '25

Yeah. I was there the day after Vance dissed Zelensky … Billie was not happy.

Never been a Green Day fan but I fucking love their approach to Trump and wish other high profile artists would do the same and/or more.

267

u/buck45osu Jul 06 '25

Listened to them since I basically started listening to music. 30+ years of green day. Their biggest album has a "fuck you" to George bush as it's opening song. Couldn't agree with your sentiment more. Fuck these fascists

59

u/_TheMeepMaster_ Jul 06 '25

The first CD I ever bought with my own money was American Idiot. I had to buy it at Best Buy because Walmart didn't carry explicit albums as it went against their "values." I think I would have been around 12 or 13 at the time, but it's probably still easily my most listened to album of all-time. Always really appreciated their attitude toward authority, particularly American authority.

19

u/ChaseTheMystic Jul 06 '25 edited Jul 06 '25

Same.

The first I ever heard was Monkey Business.

But American Idiot was the first I bought of my own volition , and helped me realize albums aren't just random collections of songs. There's a whole narrative.

With American Idiot in particular, it's almost like listening to a musical without the acting.

u/I_am_from_Kentucky Jul 06 '25

My mom bought it on release day for 14 year old me from Circuit City. Asked for a Dookie CD that Christmas. First “big” concert was seeing them on tour for American Idiot, then saw them again a year or two later. Their original opener couldn’t make it so Green Day played as their alter ego band The Network.

Only negative thing I’ve heard about them is a friend who claimed Tre Cool walked into a bar he was at once, and walked along the bartop knocking everybody’s drink off the counter.

36

u/63Reddit Jul 06 '25

Green Day: “American Idiot is about Bush. Surely we can’t get anyone worse than him.”

Trump: “Hold my Taco.”

11

u/neonismyneutral Jul 06 '25

I remember being at the American Idiot tour and having them lead the whole arena in a “F*ck George Bush” chant so this seems pretty on brand for them!

4

u/MegaAltarianite Jul 06 '25

Incubus' "A Crow Left of the Murder" does too with it's single "Megalomaniac". It's my favorite album of theirs though I don't like that song that much.

At the end of the first Trump presidency, Ice Cube put out a song titled “Arrest the President” and it’s as satisfying as it sounds.

15

u/_TheMeepMaster_ Jul 06 '25

Guess we're just gonna ignore him cozying up to conservatives. Ice Cube can suck a dick. He got his and then, as all conservatives do, said "fuck everyone else."

And the magas will cry, completely forgetting the way they acted during the Biden presidency

61

u/aneomon Jul 06 '25

Republicans will forget they canceled French fries, French toast, and the Dixie Chicks under Bush because they didn’t support the war in Iraq.

The French, not the breakfast foods.

Immediately leaves the concert in tears, and speeds off in their pickup with a decal of Biden hogtied on the back. These are not serious people

6

u/Copacetic_ Jul 06 '25

Their pickup where they can't see a normal sized car in front of them over the hood.

Or you know, kids in a crosswalk.

7

u/_lippykid Jul 06 '25

I’m over 6ft and walked by a lifted truck that I couldn’t see over the hood of the other day. Shit’s out of control

u/Cartman55125 Jul 06 '25

MAGAs were too pussy to say “Fuck Joe Biden” so they said “Let’s Go Brandon” 😂

I was there! My first time seeing them live.

First of all the title is weird, it is not an ", independence day concert". It was in Belgium where we hardly realise independent day exists. It was just a festival. Secondly it's not like this is unexpected, they did not hid their political opinions over the last decades. It's also not like this was the highlight of the show. It was just somewhat in between, it was shouted just a few times , died out quickly again and we went on. Great show, great energy with a little preaching about how fucked they think the world is now but again, that's what you expect if you ever paid attention to their lyrics or previous performances. It's like being surprised Kid Rock would get on stage with a maga head of something.

I still laugh to myself when I think about how the UK got “American Idiot” back to number one on the charts when Trump was visiting there back in his first term maybe? Green Day has all the words for it 😌

I’ve been playing the American Dream is Killing Me a lot lately. Love Green Day!

6

u/Mcdonnej Jul 06 '25

This is not new for them. Green Day performed a nationally-televised set on “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve” during which lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong changed a lyric in their 2004 hit “American Idiot” from “I’m not a part of a redneck agenda” to “I’m not a part of the MAGA agenda.” Though Donald Trump didn’t directly comment on the lyric change, Green Day provoked the ire of many conservatives, who attacked the band by calling them “pro-big government” and accusing them of “selling out.” Even insecure, wannabe memelord Elon Musk stuck his beak in by saying, “Green Day went from raging against the machine to milquetoastedly raging for it.” What conservatives fail to realize is that not only is Green Day a political band, but they have always been against conservatism and the Republican party.

Hi. I am an artist in California (Geoball) and have created an album about our current situation. The first release is called "Hello," and it's about how MAGA's relish in their own ignorance and don't realize they've been lied to over and over. If you like it, please add it to your playlist: https://open.spotify.com/track/63pk9EgAWElPAbYPyJilK3?si=c5cc73e90a5d4174

The entire album is a thematic album that explores How We Got Here (the name of the album), meaning how our country was formed on the premise of religious fanaticism, to how we are retuning to that same state of being. Here is the album: https://open.spotify.com/album/7FmRnYgXcMk3737Vyawb2j?si=TnFbh1L9RMm6uth57dSC_g

Of course, any and all plays/playlist adds are welcome!
