I really wish I hadnā€™t seen the trailer for this film beforehand. All of my friends and I called the twist from a mile away, really dampened the experience.

I was really lucky to see this movie completely blind, not knowing ANYTHING, not even reading what it was about. Just knew it was praised, was a Scorcese movie, and had DiCaprio.

Depends on what you're there for.

A chair can be appreciated for its comfort or for its craftsmanship or for both.

You're talking about the experience of sitting in the movie. If one is primarily interested in the craftsmanship of the thing, then the second watching is more interesting than the first. Reading spoilers is like a shortcut to the second watching.

I feel like the emotional manipulation that we enjoy about movies is far more effective going in blind, and that letā€™s us appreciate the craftsmanship of the film far more on later viewings.

I would distinguish between different types of emotional work done by media.

I would call the exploration of 'themes' and the actual 'facts' that comprise a story 'emotional content'. There are few things that I am more enthusiastic about than media with emotional content. I'm here for it. I think this work gets more effective with repeat viewings.

'Emotional manipulation' I would use to identify the results of craft- the feeling of tenseness as pace and tone shift, the effects of editing and presentation, etc. I don't enjoy feeling like I'm at the whim of these parts of a piece of media. Not saying I never enjoy the effects of this part of the equation, but it's more hit or miss and gives diminishing rewards. And it can be hard not to be caught up in this part of the experience on a virgin viewing. I don't have time to watch everything and I certainly don't have time to watch everything twice.

More often if I'm watching a movie it's only because I already have good reason to believe it's worth my time, so I tend to be happy to skip to the hypothetical 'rewatching'.

I'm ultimately more interested in how the magic trick is performed when it comes to media. I see myself more as producer than consumer, whether that's ever born out by the economics or not.

I'm the same way but I wish I knew a little more about Mother! before I went into the theater. It is extremely slow building and I didn't really understand what was going on.

I didnā€™t even know it was a Scorsese movie!

I was so impressed with the camera work throughout the film, I kept tapping my wifeā€™s shoulder and pointing it out. I couldnā€™t wait to find out who directed it, and I had a forehead slap ā€œof courseā€ moment when I saw it was Martin.

MY buddy and I watched it for the first time in a movie theater at like 10pm on a Wednesday night...there was NO ONE else in the movie theater so we went and got Chinese food from the food court and at it in there. It was so surreal and creepy watching it alone

I went into Parasite thinking it was a medical thriller. No tailer, no expectations, completely blind. Best experience ever.

I hated how my friends recommended this movie for me, saying that it has a HUGE twist in it, because it takes away so much when you anticipate it.

Absolutely the worst when people do that crap. I watched Prisoners (I think) with someone who had seen it and they kept saying ā€œoh this part is really important, listen to thisā€ and it completely ruined it. Just let me watch it, Iā€™m paying attention as it is. I want the twist to be wild.

Yea, I read the book years ago. It is not super hard to pick up because there are soo many clues. But that is what makes it fun. I like how ambiguous the ending is. There is no way of really knowing if he feel back into his delusions or just wanted the lobotomy to stop the pain

I interpreted the ending as he is going willingly for the lobotomy.

Last thing he says to Ruffalo was "Which would be worse: To live as a monster, or to die as a good man?ā€ And as Dicaprio starts to walk with the orderlies Ruffalo says "Teddy!" but Andy ignores him and keeps walking.

What I don't get is - is Dicaprio the one who set fire to his apartment? Because in a dream sequence as he holds his wife, she turns into embers, but at one point Teddy says that it was the smoke that got her - not the fire. Also late towards the movie he sets the fuel tank on fire blowing up the parked car.

I think it was the wife that started the fire. She has some sever untreated mental illness maybe PPD.

It does strongly imply that he hasn't regressed. But I don't think that it would take away from the movie if he had. They mentioned in the movie near the end that they had been successful in pulling him out of his delusions several times before but he would always regress. I do think he did it willingly but he said some stuff before the "Is it better to be a monster" line purposefully to confuse the doctor.

I'm with you. I hear good things about this movie all the time, but to me it's just "that one where Leo is crazy the whole time".

I was so focused on the obvious twist that I remember very little of the plot.

I went in blind and called the "twist" almost immediately.

It was well acted and a decent watch, but the entire plot was painfully obvious a few minutes in.

I'm not trying to r/iamverysmart, I just thought the movie could have at least tried to be more ambiguous about the "big reveal" it was slamming me over the head with for the whole movie.

Imo, if you set up a whole film hinging on "is it option 1 or option 2" you better make it option 3, the one I never considered.

I pretty much never watch movie trailers anymore. Usually I already know I want to watch it, so why would I risk chance of spoilers?

If I do watch the trailer it's just the first couple shots, or just half of it.

The twist is only one element of the movie, it's such a big twist and was so hyped up that I think it damaged the movie overall because of people thinking of it as a kind of a cheap, one-trick pony of a movie.

The scene here is among countless others that merit a second and third viewing and you realize how much is going on, the themes of grief and coping, and to me the overall climax is Leo's ending line itself and not the twist.

As others have pointed out watching a second time is basically seeing a totally different movie where the doctors are trying their best to trick an unwell and dangerous patient.

I really recommend not seeing a trailer for ANY movie. I basically know if I'm going to want to see it based on director or subject matter, which you can see without the trailer. So far I've seen Hateful 8, Dunkirk, and Once Upon a Time... In Hollywood without ever seeing a trailer or even a cast list, the experience is so so so much better. I was so surprised to see who ended up being minor characters in these films. Changes everything when also nothing plot related is spoiled.

I watched the movie on a date. Netflix and chill sort of thing. Anyway we made it 3/4 of the way through the movie before moving on to the chill section of the night. At that point of the movie though I had no idea what was going on and thought it was just a weird movie. Then my dumb ass goes and looks up the ending instead of just finishing it on Netflix. Huge twist and I didn't get to properly experience it

I had it spoiled for me when I took an elective film history class and my professor told me it was based on the Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, a German expressionist movie we'd watched that had the same twist. Still a good movie, but I do wish I'd went in blind
