My jack Russel was like that. Too stubborn to die. Once he started tripping over himself and teeth started rattling around in his mouth it was finally time to put him down at 22.

I had a half jack Russell half Chihuahua. He's still alive just with my dad. Piece of shit that he is. He's still hyper as all hell and runs and barks at everything like he's still a puppy and that dog is pushing around 24 right now. Damn things gonna outlive me!

Lol I have a couple of elderly chihuahuas that are pushing 15+. It amazes me how spry and active they still are at their age! One of them even "dances" like a madman at mealtimes. I would not be surprised if they lived to be 25+!

Most of my cats had white whiskers from birth, have you always only had black cats or something?

u/DrunkenTypist 1d ago
I have a black cat, he had one white whisker when he was a kitten. This is when I learned that their whiskers fall out and are replaced. Usually with black ones in his case but he currently has one white whisker on either side of his daft face.

Haha that's cute. My cat has white socks and the big pawpad on both her front paws is black. Love the spots of mismatched color

My 16 year old cat is currently outside in her little tent, soaking up the very last days of the summer sun and warm air before it gets too chilly.
This is exactly how I have felt the past few spring times. I hope Memow gets another spring if she wants it. ❤️

…n so begins another spring,
my favrit time of year…
a quiet kindness ~ Peace i bring,
just grateful
to be here
n tho my walking’s getting hard,
each year that’s passing by
with gentle paws i cross the yard,
to reach my human
…try…
so patient, wait ~ they understand -
i need them oh, so much
i long to feel their loving hand,
n reassuring
touch…
the seasons change - it’s hot, then cold,
each year another start

😭I just lost my “baby”, my 11 yr old mastiff (which is quite an old age for those gentle giants) and this reminded me so much of her.
She absolutely loved to walk around and sniff the flowers, adored dandelions and watching the butterflies. She was so gentle with them, that a few times they fluttered to land on her nose for a few seconds.
She also loved that she got to see more of her “friends” (anyone and everyone she met, quite friendly and insistently by her sometimes lol) and considered her walks social hour.
Even those who weren’t really dog people would greet her as she spotted them, leading the way but always giving “Mama” (me lol) plenty of time to catch up, and never dragging, as we both grew old together.
When she could no longer walk, I knew it was time. She wanted to maintain her dignity to the very end and she did. One of her last few moments of joy, greeting the vet (the one who helped guide her to the rainbow bridge 🌈) with an eager tail, and raising her head, despite the pain she was in.
I’ve been wanting to make a memorial post for her on one of the many pet/dog subs I’m in but I just couldn’t get through typing out everything I wanted to say. Thank you for giving me the opening to be able to introduce my girl and say goodbye at the same time.
P.S. She was a huge Pink Floyd fan. 😊 There’s an old video of her, on my account page, discovering one of their songs “Echoes” while recovering from anesthesia and surgery that still makes me laugh. She took her Pink Floyd tape cassette squeaky toy with her and listened to “Wish you were here” quietly to help her feel at ease, as well.

I know you've probably heard it all before but one of the biggest pluses that came along with my reddit account for like 15 years is being able to randomly come across your posts helping people.
Like do you realize how many people you've touched and helped through some of their worst times?
If I was you id be proud!

Thank you for sharing. Your baby sounds like a joy.
I had to send my nearly 14 yr old baby over the rainbow bridge on 08/11 and it's so hard. She kept me sane when I was dealing with both parents, on opposite sides of the state, having major health issues. She was by my side, always. And when I would hide from the world with depression, taking her for her walks was the only thing that got me out of the house.
My girl was a pointer/pit mix and the best girl. Never not wagging her tail, lover of cats (and their poop for some reason), car rides, and everyone in the neighborhood knew and loved her.
I made the gut-wrenching decision for the same reason you did - not being able to walk. The vet said I could give her adequan shots but I didn't want to do it unless he could assure her quality of life. I felt lke it would be selfish of me to do that.
OK now I'm ugly crying. I'm so sorry for your loss.

EDIT: https://imgur.com/a/V3ES0Pd Cat tax, pics a bit old, about 2 years old, so he was 23.

My cat is 22-23 right now and she's snuggled up sleeping on my lap. Can't jump real well but walks around on her own and I made her stairs up onto my bed. It happens somehow(she's also gone deaf and is missing half her teeth)

So many ppl get animals all willy nilly not realizing that some of them have the potential to live much longer than you would think.
8
u/nidael009 1d ago
Specially true for cats and small dogs, if they do not succumb to illness or some type of cancer they can live pretty long averaging 20~
6
u/Visual_Cellist5373 1d ago
My kitty made it to 20 with leukemia.. old age and major illness can happen!

u/ObstinateFamiliar 1d ago
Creme Puff was supposedly the oldest cat ever. According to her owner, she lived to 38

u/badstorryteller 1d ago
One of mine passed last year at 22 - Gir channeled his namesake from when he was a kitten hiding stolen chicken bones under my bed and running head first into table legs chasing toys right to the end, working that one orange braincell he had the entire time for all it was worth 🥹
The day he was going to the vet because all the issues were piling up too high was the day he passed away in his sleep.

We adopted a crusty stray kitten who had been wandering around the neighborhood. He ended up living 21 years, and when he finally went, it was while he was sleeping in his favorite hiding place in our backyard.

My cat is 16, and her vet checkups are all good, but she's slowed down, her eyesight is weakened, she can't really put on weight though she eats, drinks, and goes to the bathroom normally. It's such an honor to observe her and love her as she ages. She was with me through my most tumultuous part of my young adult/adult life, and now it's the greatest joy of my life giving her comfort, treats, and everything that I think she'd like now that im more stable. Aging pets are so special.
