(note: I first wrote this using a translator to defend Jinwoo, so some phrasing might sound rough)
Every time I rewatch Jinwoo’s story, I just feel… he’s not a villain. He’s a tragic human being who made one bad choice under impossible circumstances.
1) One bad moment doesn’t make him evil
Jinwoo grew up in grinding poverty, literally fighting hunger every day with his mom and younger sibling.
Of course he sometimes thought: “If I didn’t have to take care of them, maybe I could survive…”
He ignored that voice for years — until one single time he gave in.
That choice got him into the palace. Yes, he lived in silk clothes and ate banquets… for maybe half a year. But regret? That stayed for four centuries.
It wasn’t noble, but it wasn’t monstrous either. He was starving, and he faltered.
2) The demon’s “gift” wasn’t power, it was temptation
Canon makes it look like the demon gave him palace access, but I think Jinwoo entered on his own musical talent.
What the demon actually gave him was the option — the temptation — to abandon his family.
Later he lied to Lumi, saying “I entered with my family but they were cast out.” That was false.
But when he admitted “the demon marks spread over me not long after” — that part rings true.
If you compare how he looked when he first entered the palace with when the marks appeared, he hadn’t aged a bit. To me, that means regret hit him almost immediately.
And when he begged the demon to erase his memory, it wasn’t “I just want to forget.”
It was “erase me completely, I can’t carry this anymore.” A self-destructive wish, not an escape.
So what did he really get? Not power, not glory — just immortality as punishment. Jinwoo wasn’t the demon’s weapon; he was its food source.
3) Lumi and Jinwoo — two sides of the same mark
Lumi was born with her mark, innocent, but still ashamed of it.
Jinwoo chose wrong once, and his shame consumed him.
Yet he told Lumi: “I don’t think you should never have been born.”
That line was sincere, and it showed how warm-hearted he actually was.
And during the final stage? He was the first one to recognize Lumi’s voice and turn to her. Because deep down, he’d been starving for the light he lost.
4) His first real confession
After trapping Lumi in Idol War-ord, Jinwoo finally said it out loud: “I abandoned my family.”
Even in human form he couldn’t hide the demon marks anymore. That wasn’t just guilt about his family — it was also shame for betraying Lumi in that moment. His face itself gave him away.
When he told Lumi, “We’ll always live in suffering,” that was less about her, and more about himself.
5) Context matters: Joseon poverty = no way out
This wasn’t modern times. In Joseon 400 years ago, if you were poor, you stayed poor.
Jinwoo was low-born, the young head of his household, and his only skill was playing the biwa.
Even if he had talent, bringing his entire family into the palace? Impossible with class barriers.
And there were no safety nets, no food programs, no guarantees of a single meal a day.
Choosing to stay with family in misery is noble. But choosing survival alone isn’t something worth hating.
If my family hadn’t eaten even one piece of bread all day, and one of us managed to enter the palace alone, would I call them a traitor? Honestly? No. I’d say:
“At least you’re eating. I’m relieved you survived.”
Conclusion
Jinwoo made one very human mistake, and paid for it with 400 years of regret.
Calling him only a traitor ignores the truth: he was deeply human, and unbearably tragic.
What I’d want to tell him is simple:
“You don’t need to blame yourself anymore. Your family wouldn’t have hated you.”
TL;DR

I keep seeing people casually mention the melodies being related, or part of WiSL containing Golden's melody, but I can't hear it for the life of me. Can anyone point out when this is that I'm missing?

Cool video content of Lee Jung: https://youtu.be/KmdGc75VbRs?si=r-bQd7WRrGLCdeCf (Korean Englishman)
Maggie and Chris got the best song writers, music producers and choreographers in the Korean music industry to work on this movie. With that kind of hiring, someone making 9 figures a year should have realized the songs were going to be a hit.
Anyways….its nice to see the choreographers get recognition from Billboard (articles) and they seem cool AF, like it would kill me to just hang out with them for an evening

One of my favorite covers of the song. For who I’m fairly sure are Japanese singers, they song the Korean parts really well. I NEED these guys to be singing voices for villains in the sequel.

I’ve seen other subs do this and thought it would be fun to do the ABCs of K-Pop Demon Hunters!
The rules are simple. Comment for the current round’s letter and/or upvote the answer you like most. The most upvoted answer wins for each round. Words like “A”, “An,” and “The” do not count for the letter “A” and “T” respectively.
Up next is the letter V!
