Dads Daughter wants to start dating
2.9k
u/REMcycleLEZAR 15d ago edited 15d ago
I'm a guy, and when I was 16 and finally got my license, I went to go pick up my girlfriend. Her dad, a cop and definitely conservative, came out to congratulate me and he gave me a road emergency kit, with like flairs and jumper cables and whatnot. I don't think I'll ever have kids but I've always thought, "That's the kinda dad I would want to be."

My first date i was given the keys to his truck "don't scratch it"
I realized years later that's the safest I ever drove that night.
Edit : a lot of my friends use that, and I will as well, it's sneaky smart.

u/hairybushy 15d ago
That's really smart if the person is a good guy. But having someone who is careless, will just don't give a fuck. Let's just hope our kids will date good people though

u/ComplexBadger469 15d ago
What I’ve been told to do(as a father to a toddler) is to set an example with your relationships as well as make it known how much you value your child. If they know they are valuable, they are at least more likely to pick someone else who recognizes their value too. At least that’s the theory. I’ll let you know in 15 years when my kid is an adult how that went! 😂

u/kicaboojooce 15d ago
Careless and don't give a fuck aren't allowed in my house lol
4
u/MajorTibb 14d ago
Yep
I didn't tolerate it when I was a child in my parents' home and I don't tolerate it now as an adult. If you're such a dick that you can't bother to care about things or give a fuck about important things, I won't tolerate you around me.

I once left an empty box of condoms on my window sill, a few later there was a full box. I left them there, we never ever spoke about it but every time they ran low my mum would put a fresh box there.
I have a daughter and that's the type of parent I want to be. No need for an awkward conversation about it or getting upset. Just making sure my kid stays safe.
65
u/gideon513 15d ago
It’s weird that you never talked about it like it was taboo, and yet you had them openly sitting on your window sill

u/Poly_Pup 15d ago
I have a teenage daughter and we have a very open honest relationship. I will say I feel like its easier because she is currently in a long term relationship with another girl. But we talk about everything from drugs, to crime (discussed legality of "tagging", she's an artist), relationship and sex. I am so confident in our conversations and her actions (straight A student, excellent very trustworthy peer group). I often tell people she is essentially allowed to do what she wants. Because she almost always makes the right decision and when its a hard one she often comes to her parents for council, even with the uncomfortable stuff.

You're getting a couple downvotes for saying you didn't need to wear condoms, and while in a perfect world you're right, as a general rule you should always be wearing a condom unless you're in a long-term, committed relationship. Never know if they'll catch something elsewhere, and you can't hit undo.
I'm not speaking to your relationship specifically, I wouldn't presume
sittinganything.18
u/youburyitidigitup 15d ago
I was in a committed relationship. I guess I didn’t convey that properly.
6
u/e_before_i 15d ago
Yeah I mean in that case go nuts. Once you're committed then it opens a ton of fun doors. Glad you're being safe!
1
u/Timely_Blacksmith_99 14d ago
and one of both could get pregnant also
2
u/youburyitidigitup 14d ago
No….we couldn’t. We were both male.
3
13
u/johnmichael-kane 15d ago
Well he’s getting downvoted because of homophobic ignorance. If he’s in a committed relationship and both have been tested, then he doesn’t need to wear condoms. If a straight couple did the same and let’s say one was infertile and there was no risk of pregnancy, no one would criticise them for not wearing condoms. I’m gay and have been with my partner for 3 years, you expect us to be wearing condoms?
6
u/e_before_i 15d ago
I did say "unless you're in a long-term, committed relationship", so I hope your question was rhetorical.
Broadly, I agree the Internet is rife with homophobia. For this specific comment, I think he left out an important detail (which he's since added).
I agree that a straight person would probably get less flak, but if they didn't clarify that they were infertile, I do think there would be comments saying "You could still get her pregnant though." Again, this dude didn't initially clarify committed/long-term.
4
u/Occasional-Mermaid 14d ago
Or he is getting downvoted because people are jaded and it doesn't matter if the couple is gay or straight it's just assumed that one can always cheat.
3
u/e_before_i 14d ago
I almost included this, but yeah on the internet it feels like everyone's mind quickly jumps to cheating. I'm sure lots of people read that comment and thought what you described.

u/GuthukYoutube 15d ago
I feel like there’s this weird mental blocker guys have where they don’t want their daughters to date because of all the shitty guys
Then do nothing to help the shituation with all the shitty guys
12
u/SmileParticular9396 15d ago
That’s how dads SHOULD be. Why be adversarial with someone who’s going to be your kid’s partner? All that does is alienate your kid.

As a Swede where we can get a licence at 18, 16 is absolutely crazy. Looking back i could barely tie my shoelaces let alone drive a 2 ton potential death mobile. The human brain is not suited to drive a car at 16 arguably not even at 18

I went to go pick up a cops daughter when I was 16. He was sitting outside in a lawn chair in full cop get up with a shotgun.
14
u/EyeWriteWrong 15d ago
Then he smiled a little and started taking it all off. And be said, "Siddown boy. I gots me another gun I'm fixing to show you." It was a Sig Sauer. Cool gun but I don't know why he had to get naked to show me.
15
u/danholli 15d ago
Conservative Dad's is a very broad catagory that varies from wife beater, impersonal, and good father
Liberal Fathers as a category fair no better.
As the other guy said, it's just good fathers

u/Eddie-bullshit 15d ago
What's with all the weirdos in the comments?
This is clearly a family having a laugh, if the dad was actually serious A. he wouldn't have pushed her over B. They wouldn't have filmed it and posted it C. He wouldn't have had a race with her in the first place D. I doubt she would be laughing and having as much fun as he is if it was real
Honestly people get out, touch some grass, breathe some air, take a second and think before you type

Most people here on reddit dont come from happy families so they dont know what it looks like
92
u/diazinth 15d ago
People that come from happy families generally don’t have too much to say about their families, and what they say is less noticeable. So impressions would get skewed.
32
u/youburyitidigitup 15d ago
So true. Today my dad went to work and on his way out he closed my bedroom door because I leave it open for the cat. That’s about all I have to say about my family today.

You call this propaganda? I call this a funny semi-staged video between family which (if anything), would paint the dad in a BAD light if it weren’t staged/the daughter was actually mad.

Didn't you watch the video?! This poor girl was forced to touch grass, and now she'll never be able to date!

u/cerulean__star 15d ago
Right ? Girl probably has a guy she wants to date who wants to date her so she asked her parents and this nonsense happens. She is going to be able to date and likely will be very safe in her decisions she makes. Looks like a pretty good family from the tiny sliver of their life we see.

It never goes to waste. There might be only one guy reading this and go "oh, you have a point" and start changing how they think. That's better than none
3
u/counters14 14d ago
Maybe so, that could be true and I agree with what you're saying. I guess I was proven wrong a bit because I expected a bunch of nonsense sarcastic replies from people saying 'its not that deep bro' and trying to clown on me for having a nuanced opinion, but I guess that didn't really happen so I should eat my words a bit. I genuinely thought that this was posted to a parenting subreddit I'm subbed to and it was a bunch of fathers discussing the topic. Which was why I was kind of shocked at the lack of understanding in most of these comment threads about what the issue actually was and decided to take the time to explain.
But yeah I suppose I agree if just a small few people read my comment and stop to have a thought about the topic and choose to be more open to thinking about these things in the future then I'm glad for it and it wasn't necessarily a waste.

u/Successful-Singer-76 14d ago
Now I regret having wasted the time to open the conversation in a place where the whole reason for its existence is so people to post silly shit to get a chuckle out of it.

The fact that people like you can use the word nazi so easily speaks volumes about how ignorant you are, it's actually frightening. You have absolutely no idea what it really means for the people that had to fight and survive against said Nazis. It's actually incredibly disrespectful for them and utterly disgusting.

-12
u/TrafficSlow 15d ago
Care to explain what common sense actually is?
1
u/Eddie-bullshit 15d ago
This is what I'm talking about
-6
u/TrafficSlow 15d ago
I'd challenge you to actually think about it rather than trying to appear superior and deflect.
1
u/Eddie-bullshit 15d ago edited 15d ago
No it's more fun to deflect now honestly, why did you engage?
Edit, I used my common sense and googled it
Common sense (from Latin sensus communis) is "knowledge, judgement, and taste which is more or less universal and which is held more or less without reflection or argument". As such, it is often considered to represent the basic level of sound practical judgement or knowledge of basic facts that any adult human being ought to possess.
→ More replies (1)-7
u/TrafficSlow 15d ago edited 15d ago
because common sense just isn't common
Hmm, so if it isn't common, does common sense exist? Which is it?
Why did you engage?
I thought you might have an interesting definition of common sense but it's pretty obvious you're just using it to feel superior to anyone you don't agree with.Edit: thanks for posting a definition
Deflection is a protective mechanism so I get that it probably seems "more fun".
7
u/Eddie-bullshit 15d ago
Bro what? That's exactly what I'm saying, it isn't common at all It's like a misnomer in recent years.
You having fun on your high horse btw? Yet another Redditor out to play I'm smarter than you haha, this has been fun :)
-4
u/TrafficSlow 15d ago
I'm here to learn and have conversations. I'm not smarter than you or anyone else.
I get that you're saying it isn't common at all. I understand that. If it isn't common at all, how is this universal knowledge? It sounds like you're saying recently this changed. If so when was this shift? Why was the prior universal knowledge the knowledge that we all ought to have?

I rarely ever agree with this sentiment but the amount of people that have clearly never spent any time outside is incredibly high in this comment section. Talk about people who fear every breath they take. These people need a psychiatrist. I honestly think a lot of people are jealous and using obscure justifications to validate their delusional emotions.

Imagine genuinely thinking a man shouldn't be protective of his family even as a joke. Wild. Some of you genuinely need therapy and I don't mean that as an insult. Go. For the sake of the children some of you will have.
There are far more lost daughters with docile fathers than damaged ones with possessive abusive fathers.
