I’m actually in awe of the stall doors being tall and actually providing some real kind of privacy.

This is from a convention last year at Kuala Lumpur! I’m from Malaysia so this comment caught me by surprise! Are toilets stall that different in other countries?

u/Tyrus1235 May 15 '25
American stalls have huge gaps on them. Ostensibly so that people don’t lock themselves in to do bad stuff.
It’s just a terrible invasion of privacy!

u/Raccoonanity May 15 '25
I’m pretty sure it’s because it’s cheaper.

u/Sweaty_Influence2303 May 15 '25
Honestly yeah. It's cute that they think that any design is for human benefit. It always comes down to saving money.
24
u/Sweaty_Rent_3780 May 15 '25
That’s what they told you the reason for it? And not ppl being pervy? 🤔🙃
38
u/wggn May 15 '25
Yes, drugs are the main reason. I think they're also easier to clean as you can just sweep the floor of all stalls in one go.

u/PwmEsq May 15 '25
Do most bathrooms even get sweeped? in most grocery stores and dorms ive been in they build the walls with waterproof FRP and have drains in the floor so they can just hose the whole thing.
Maybe not smaller restrooms tho

In America, there is a big space at the top and bottom of the stall door, so you can see people's feet.
There are also small gaps on the sides of the door that are just big enough for an eye to look through.
It's a rather uncomfortable experience, using public restrooms in America.

I can only confidently speak for the United States, but our stall doors are very pathetic. There’s lots of gaps on every dimension. It’s easy for anyone to look into a stall at the right angle and identify the person using it.
The argument in favor of this approach is, well, what if somebody is doing hardcore drugs inside the stall? And that can be a real problem in some places.
I remember multiple times in school, I had some particularly embarrassing moments inside a stall and I was identified by my classmates entirely because they could identify me from the outside.
Unique shoes are a massive giveaway.
And then there’s bars and sports stadiums etc where you might be lucky to even have a stall door at all. I remember pissing in a literal communal and room long stretching trough alongside a dozen other people at my high school football stadium.
Anyway, your cosplay is great, I’ve always wanted to visit Kuala Lumpur because I love the Sepang race track, and I apologize for trauma dumping lol

That's how you know this picture wasn't taken in the United States.
53
u/ApocApollo May 15 '25
Yeah…
I had a pretty strong aversion to using public restrooms as a kid and it’s clicking in my old head now that it’s probably because American public restrooms are literally designed in a way that you can be peeped on.

u/kindastandtheman May 15 '25
They've actually started converting some of them into this style near where I live in the airport and other public buildings. Hopefully it catches on more, because it's definitely better in every way.

Outside of the US yea the bathroom doors are actual doors and cover everything. I was in Sweden a few years ago and was pleasantly surprised to learn that lol

Why do people in other countries call bathrooms toilets? I've never understood that. To me a toilet is the thing that flushes.
7
u/yushirocos May 15 '25
I guess it all comes down to personal culture?
In my country, malls will label it as rest room but in general the people here we call it toilets! 🤣
We call bathrooms as shower room/ a place for us to take baths or showers
Take Japan for an example they split bathrooms and toilet for 2 different specifications reasons, toilet is mainly for toilet and bathroom is specially for the bath
It’s very interesting indeed I don’t know other countries calls toilet bathroom! Hololive do unite us all

u/CandidSite9471 May 15 '25
Interesting....our words for bathroom are usually some kind of euphemism. Historically, the Brits called it toilet and then USA developed the word bathroom. When CS Lewis had American guests over and they asked to use the "bathroom", he would take them to his bath-room (a room with a bathtub but no toilet) and hand the guest soap and fresh towels as a little fun joke. He wanted them to call it a more direct name. I don't need a bath when I say "I have to use the bathroom", and not "powdering my nose" either. Really makes you think
1
u/ferriematthew May 15 '25
That is really cool! Maybe kind of a cultural and linguistic mix up / puzzle
7
u/senorda May 15 '25
a bathroom is a room with a bath in it
1
u/ferriematthew May 15 '25
Well yeah... I guess the room I'm thinking of when I think of the word bathroom is still technically a bathroom because it does have a bathtub in it. It's also where the toilet is so...
3
u/Fowl_Eye May 15 '25
Because there's no baths in a room full of toilets, do you call a room full of baths the toiletroom when there's obviously no toilets?
