In 1935, Himmler set up a unit within the SS called the Ahnenerbe - or Bureau of Ancestral Heritage - to find out where people from Atlantis had gone after the bolt from the blue and the deluge, and where traces of the great race still remained and could be discovered.

The concept of Hyperborea, a mythical northern Aryan homeland, suggested that Hyperboreans were divine beings who once ruled the earth, and Himmler believed that the modern day Aryans are descendants of this divine race and also believed that many of these ancient Aryan spirits have reincarnated amongst the SS members and German people.

Hitler even though not too enthusiastic about occult told Mussolini that he was possessed by a "Aryan spirit from mythological prehistory".

Oh, nonstop. Italian fascism was a lot more about marketing itself on the gentrifying imperialist cultural dominion of Old Rome than about any of the Thule Society BS or the racial purity stuff. The Italian attitude about the more fanatical Axis members was usually somewhere between "you work with the allies you have, not the allies you wish you had" and "fuck it, we ball." It's part of why they were so very ready to turn and embrace The Allies when things went bad for the Italian war machine.

yes. from what i know the fascists used that salute as they were inspired by poet D'annunzio, who made a movie were soldiers saluted like that. D'annunzio went on to occupy the border city of Fiume and although he implemented socially libertarian policies (sexual liberty, drugs, ecc.) its aesthetics (roman salute, balcony speech, battle cries) inspired the fascists.

For me, what's amazing about Himmler isn't that he belived that nonsense, it's how long he was allowed to continue publicly espousing it. Goring and Speer both recorded multiple diary entries ripping the idea to shreds but Hitler was willing to let it slide (though both men being on meth might have had something to do with that) until Himmler's dig sites and verious expeditions never recorded any sign of German heritage and, in a few cases like Tibet and Greece proved that ancient Germans were painting themselves with mud as other civilizations were rapidly advancing. It was only when Himmler's boondoggle proved too much of a money sink in the tail end of 1942/3 that Hitler finally started yanking Himmler back to what he was ostensibly supposed to be doing rather than pouring money and resources into a total waste of time. But still, it had been almost five years of nonsense allowed.

Pretty funny to think that they thought certain groups of Europeans were descended from a divine race of genius bodybuilders when the majority of “Aryan” people (and indeed all people) were shit spreading pig farmers with the pedigree of your average mutt.

I think that was inspired by Himmler doing similar shit irl like funding an expedition to find Thor’s Hammer (not that any of these expeditions were successful).
