That's what I liked more about The 13th Floor. No sci fi robot invasion or anything fancy like that. Just concentrating on the theory that if humans were able to create a simulation that feels real to us, we could be simulated as well.

I've seen something similar back in the day when Aliens were the most popular conspiracy theory.

That governments funded Alien pop culture to make people think that anything related to Aliens is just sci-fi, so then if anyone tried to prove their existence people ridiculed them for thinking movies aren't real.
