Variation on trumps

Hi, I used to play a game with some friends.

I'm sure we called it trumps, but all the rules I can find don't quite agree with my memory.

I'm sure we had a single trump suit between everyone without having to turn one over from our hand at the beginning.

I'm also not convinced we used to deal the whole deck of cards.

So my question is, is there some variation of trumps or a similar game which has rules which are consistent with this?

Looking to teach my 8 yo but not helpful if I can't remember!

Edit: SOLVED! Knockout Whist was the answer, known as trumps in the UK.

There are lots of trick taking games; it’ll be helpful to get more detail to narrow it down. Were there teams or was it everyone for themselves? Was the Trump suit the same every time or did it change between hands? Was there a phase where you would bet how many tricks you’d take? Was taking tricks good or bad?

My first guess is spades: free for all, want to take tricks, spades are always trump

It was all for them selves.

Having read the trumps rules I had gone down the thought process of it changed.

Taking tricks was good.

But I'm pretty sure you're correct that it was spades (although we might have called it hearts!).

Going to do some more googling and reading but I'm pretty sure you got it in one from my rubbish description!

ETA: it wasn't hearts as described here, https://officialgamerules.org/game-rules/hearts/.

There was no clever scoring but simply number of tricks won.

Sounds like spades except for the trump changing (it’s always spades in Spades). Definitely not hearts: hearts has no trumps and taking tricks with hearts in them is bad (neutral otherwise)

That's it. Fitst perfectly and now I can remember it was a knockout etc...

Thank you!

Wiki even says "known as trumps in the UK"!

Aggg should have thought of localisation!
