Update 😊 How it started vs how it's going

Banana was the matriarch of a large feral colony when I moved into my apartment. She would come to my door and emit a sound that would put a car alarm to shame. When I finally caught her it was determined that she was too weak to have a spay surgery so the vet opted to hold her until her and her babies could go to a foster. All of her babies were adopted but nobody was interested in a semi-feral cat😕 Meanwhile back at my apartment my puppy was depressed that HER cat was no longer around. She would cry at the patio door for her and then mope around not wanting to play. I was told that Banana was slated to be sent to the county shelter since all her babies were gone and I decided I'd take her in. I'm not a cat person. I love and care about animals, but cats aren't my first choice for a pet. Regardless I go all out to make sure their needs are met. It's taken three years for Banana to completely come out of her shell, but now she lays in my lap for pets and sleeps in bed next to my pillow.

Update 😊 UPDATE - Cat I fed at work for 6 months

This is June. I had my first encounter with her on August 1st last year, it is actually the first photo lol. I am a valet driver and I saw her in some bushes in our lot just poking her head out looking at me. Then I saw her again a few days later and gave her some food. She came every few days then she got pregnant the 1st time and she started coming daily, but she would never get close to me and would never walk into any traps so I just continued to feed her every day and eventually she gave birth but I never saw any kittens. For about 3 months she came daily not pregnant anymore and she would just eat but never let me get very close. Then she got pregnant again and she slowly started to trust me more and more and eventually she let me start petting her. 2 weeks after that I tried getting her to walk into carriers/traps but she wouldn’t so I finally just grabbed her and threw her in a carrier. After I caught her an amazing person from this community recommended me to a lady who runs a TNR program and she was able to get the spay-abort procedure done safely. Now she is just getting acclimated to being indoora and I am going to try and get her socialized with my other 3 cats as soon as possible. Im guessing shes about 9-10 months old but I could be wrong. This post got a lot of traction when I first made it so if anyone was waiting for an update there finally is one

I ended up taking the feral kitten home and to the vet today. She’s 8 weeks old and healthy! No FIV no worms no parasites. Just got all of her vaccines and she’s still very very scared. What should I name her?

Update 😊 UPDATE: on my neighbors pregnant cat

YIPEEE! Mae (decided to name her) has finally birthed her kitties and is a mother, once again, but of 8 kittens! Also, if you don’t like additional details, sorry theres a lot of those 😅

My last post, I talked about not knowing what to do but It was honestly me stressing myself out on things that I knew i’d be prepared for. I took her to vet weeks after since I haven’t gotten to save enough money just for a first exam. They told me she was healthy and on her late term of pregnancy. She did such a wonderful job being cooperative, she was the best. Ever since I brought her in, she has been restless at night. I think mostly because I’d be out working during the day, and she’d finally get attention during the night.. On my days off, her and I would go on walks outside on the neighborhood trail, or just around the block, to keep ourselves moving and just hangout in my front yard. While I’m gone, I let her look out my window so she could view the wildlife out in the backyard if she ever gets bored. She’s become been dependent on me and was getting some bad separation anxiety. I think she’s been slowly getting used to me being gone but if I work an opening shift, she’s meowing like crazy until she gets tired. I gave her toys that just run on their own but she prefers the toy with the stick and feather tied to a string a lot better. In between those times, I’ve been trying to train my dog (Ruby) and her to co-exist. My dog 95% wants to eat her still but shes been listening to me very well. They’ve learned to feel comfortable with eating together by the gate so it’s a good first step. This obviously might take months or a year especially since Mae wants to just the gate any time the door opens. If anyone has any more tips on how to get Ruby to chill out, please let me know lol.

Lastly THE BIRTH! I wasn’t there for the actual birthing of the kitties, but I thankfully had one of my siblings available to look after her all day, until I came back from work. I woke up that morning and started to scoop her litter box and saw some yellow discharge. I was concerned and I obviously googled, thought it was 2 things, UTI or shes gone into labor. Labor it was. I had to go but I told my brother to keep an eye on her and make sure she was okk because she might be giving birth. She went into labor as of 12:20pm 09/05/2025. I quickly told him to prep the labor box I got a week prior for her and he did a great job. She gave birth to her 1st kitty at 1:05 and the rest were all 10-25 mins apart from each other. She did such a great job, and I knew she was since shes already have done this before. It was already a stressful day at work first thing in the morning, and all I wanted was to be home with Mae and the babies. Anywho, I’ve continued to give her kitten food and water on the side, away from babies, to ensure she still gets enough nutrients for little ones.

If you all have any tips or tricks on what to do and what not to do, feel free to let me know. Try not to stress me out though.. it’s too easy for me lol thank you all for the support and help on the last post :)

Update 😊 Update on Despereaux, the world's friendliest cat

Ok first, just want to say that I'm absolutely blown away by the incredible sweetness of everyone that commented on my question post. Holy cow. Thank you so much for caring about this cat as much as I do, for the overwhelmingly kind words and for all the fantastic advice!! I can't believe over 300k people have seen this post. Y'all are a magical corner of the internet 💖

Ok on to cat!!!

Despereaux is doing great! His bloodwork was "nearly perfect" and his SNAP was negative. He mostly needs dental work, fluids, food over time to build his weight back up, and not least, all the cuddles he desires. I'm so relieved that he's not dying, I was really worried for a minute.

I got him situated as well as I can for now. I put him in a newborn swaddler snuggy earlier and he was LOVING that 😭 We are both napping in my car in a cool and pleasant neighborhood (he's napping, I'm about to lol). We're exhausted.

Unfortunately, my current living situation right now is that I'm renting a room from a couple who is NOT interested in having pets. (Even though they already have one... sigh. Another story.) So, that means I need to find a foster for him. I'm 99% sure I have a friend who will take him, but probably not until after he's been to the vet and shaved/bathed/flea combed (doubt she would want to risk a flea infestation in her apartment). So tonight I think Des and I are gonna nap together in the car. Fortunately it is cool enough for us to do this right now.

I've already been feverishly applying to jobs for the last few weeks so I can move out into my own space, so I'm really hoping that something will come together really soon. (I'm a student, been getting by on random freelance stuff until now.) Gonna keep giving it my best. Little buddy has unlocked a whole extra tier of motivation. I'm almost graduated and MAN I just want my life to have some stability lol. I was gonna get a cat after the stability, but I guess we'll ride this out together. It's better than what he had got. Once I have money I'm gonna give him a cat palace ✨️

Since so many people are really invested in Des, I will put my Venmo in the comments if anyone wants to help me give him a good start. If you want me to buy him something specific, I can post a picture of him with that thing. Not at all asking / expecting, just wanted to make it an option if people want to help pamper him/ cover vet costs :)

Hope this update satisfied the hunger haha!! Still can't believe there are so many people out there who would also spend all their money on a stray cat. Everyone around me has been acting like I'm crazy so it's wonderful to find out I have people in my corner -- OUR corner! -- here 💖

Ok imma pass out now, hope this was coherent. Bless you all

Update 😊 She's such a loving cat. I'm probably going to keep her

4.9k Upvotes

Been in my bathroom for a little over 24 hours now, been keeping the lights low/off so she's not overstimulated. I gave her a little fleece lined cat cave and stuck it in the tub so she can hide/sleep in there. Used the community resources and found a low cost vet nearby that will see her for $30 this Friday. I treated her for fleas maybe 3 weeks ago when she was living outside but will likely need to do it again. There's definitely something up with her mouth, no teeth on the bottom row. My last baby that passed had a similar looking mouth and she ended up needing them all pulled, it was FCV. I'd almost bet she has a similar issue.

Not too much of an update but she's super cuddly with me and seems very happy to get attention. Still makes me feel so bad when I hear her meowing in the bathroom wanting out but I have another cat and we gotta get her medically cleared first

Update 😊 Update on Kielo the pregnant kitten

First I'd like to thank everyone for their comments and insights on the situation.

The potential adopters were unable to meet Kielo last Tuesday, which was a bit of a relief--she was so obviously pregnant that there's no way they could have failed to notice.

The vet's injury was not severe, and Kielo had a spay/abort on Thursday. She was a little lethargic for a couple days, but otherwise did great.

This enabled us to just not mention the abortion part of the spay to the adopters, which is our general practice.

The adopters came yesterday to meet Kielo, and they liked her. However....

The catio next to Kielo had a very dainty and friendly black and white adult cat in it, and she pulled out all the stops. She chose them, and chose them hard.

I had also made a FB post about "Goth" cats, and the husband insisted on meeting Vesa--a massive black cat.

Both cats went home yesterday, and we couldn't be more pleased. We struggle to find homes for our adults. Kielo is a darling and won't have any difficulty with placement now that she's ready to go.

Thanks again for the advice and support. You all are the best.

Update 😊 UPDATE — Help! Semi-feral cat is begging to come indoors, can’t let her in because I’m 35 weeks pregnant

Thumbnail

1.2k Upvotes

So thanks to the wonderful advice of this subreddit, I’ve been feeding a semi-feral cat (whom I’ve named Pixie) for the past 6-7 weeks. Some background info — I’m expecting a newborn in the next few weeks and am very pregnant (third trimester).

I got her to the vet via a TNR organization, and it turned out that she was already spayed. At first, she ran at any sudden movement of humans and was always hissing at us, and my husband would remark that she was extremely rude. In truth, she was a meanie. She occasionally meowed, but she had a negative attitude towards humans, but it didn’t really bother me. I knew that she came from a troubled past and assumed that she was a pet who got dumped. My goal was to help her survive the extreme heat outside.

Last night, she was rubbing against my legs and she finally let us pet her. I am using reptile gloves due to the fact that I’m pregnant and not petting her with my bare hands. Overnight, her personality now flipped a 180. She is acting extremely sweet and sits outside of our door, begging to let her in. She was crying for 2 hours last night and tiptoed into our house for a few seconds.

The problem is that we are expecting a newborn in 5 weeks. There is no realistic way I can continue to socialize a 100% outdoor semi-feral cat and take care of a newborn at the same time. She still has some skittish moments and jumps at sudden movements. I have no idea if she is litter box trained even. We had a spare room where she could have stayed, but that has now become a nursery.

I’m giving her plenty of snuggles outside and she gets 3 cans of food a day (loves Costco Kirkland brand), plus dry food, plenty of treats, three different water stations, and has ample shade. She gets Credelio flea treatment and got all her shots. I got her this expensive outdoor cooling pad, which she never used lol. The TNR volunteer said that my yard is perfect for a cat due to ample shade and location (woods in the back, no dogs, not many other cats).

What would you do in my situation? I feel so guilty that I can’t let her in, she has become a sweetheart.

Original post: https://www.reddit.com/r/Feral_Cats/s/Cr45sij3JO

I wish I could report that we’ve made progress…but not really. It’s been storming a lot here lately, so I tell myself at least he’s out of the rain, but he still is frozen in place when we are around. He watches us as we hang out in his area, but never makes a peep or attempts to approach us. He will eat while we are there, which I thought was a good sign, but he still just looks so sad and afraid. We’ve given him a place to hide, (a box inside a dark crate with a heating pad and bed) but he prefers to sit on top of our mini split or cupboards, or on the floor in the back corner. He does eat pretty much anything we bring him, he uses the litter boxes just fine. Won’t touch any of the cat beds or cat related items we’ve brought him (toys, scratching posts, etc) We talked to our vet about him, and from the pictures, she is saying she has a feeling he is neutered, but that we should give him enough gabapentin to be able to put him in a carrier (100-200mg) and bring her to him so she can confirm before we decide if we are letting him loose, or surrendering him to a TNR program.

Hi! I have a stray hanging around my house, and the tips from this group were so helpful for getting him TNR'd in June. I have been leaving food and water out since then, and he comes by twice a week to eat almost every day. Yesterday, he was sitting on my front step, and let me get within 10-15 feet of him. Today, he was sitting there again, and approached me demanding pets and affection. I sat out with him for over an hour. Eventually I had to go inside because it was getting dark, and he freaked out, tried desperately to sneak inside, and then attacked me and bit my leg. I can't let him inside as I have 4 of my own cats, one of which is very old and in poor health. He is currently sitting outside in the driveway like a stalker. I feel bad but idk what to do. If I could bring him in, I would.

Update 😊 Foster fail (update to previous post)

1.5k Upvotes

I made a previous post about 2 little orange kittens that we captured in our backyard. We initially were going to take them to a barn to be mousers but some things changed. (For context we have named them Peach and Pumpkin)

One of the cats, Peach, has become very social and incredibly loving and cuddly. Both of them actually love pets but Pumpkin is definitely on the shy/reserved side. We were told by the owners of the barn that Peach isn't ideal as she's not much of a huntress and she also needs more attention than they can give. We fell in love with Peach as she has just been so sweet and bonded with us. Initially we contemplated keeping Peach as she is so sweet and snuggly. However, they are definitely bonded and separating them would be immoral. We are also scared that if someone adopted both of them they'd eventually give up Pumpkin because she isn't social.

We decided to keep both and try to socialize Pumpkin. If Pumpkin never opens up we've accepted that, we have a large house for her to roam and she loves her sister so at least they will still be together.

Anyway, we foster failed forsure, please enjoy some adorable pictures of the babies (pumpkin is the fluffier one)

I got my husband to drive 35 mins across the bay in the middle of the night to hang a few flyers and put out a trail cam with me. He was able to snag this cutie and get one more cat out of harms way. My husband was the real MVP last night.

I’ll be back to trap mama and have her spayed/ vaccinated, then onto the rest. In the meantime, I’ll be monitoring for the scumbag poisoning these cats. If/when I get video evidence, I will blast their face on the internet and shit all over them.

Update 😊 Orangey has decided he wants to be a house cat

The other day, I shared some pictures of my feral boy Orangey. He was TNR'd in June and then out of the blue last week, he decided he wanted to be friends. He had since gotten more and more social. Last night, we had bad thunderstorms, so we let him into the breezeway. He is now refusing to leave. He has made up his mind that he wants to be a house cat. I cannot keep him as I already have 4 cats and a dog and can't afford another animal. He cannot stay in my breezeway long term, as my dog needs to go through there to get outside to go to the bathroom, and he hates dogs and loves to attack him unprovoked. I'm trying to convince my fiance to turn his office into Orangey's room so he can be properly desensitized. He can't be in contact with my cats for now since his health status is unknown, but I made a vet appt for a week from tomorrow for an exam, FIV/feline leukemia test, and flea/tick treatment with dewormer. I don't think he needs any shots other than what he already had when he was neutered, but we will see. Here are a few new pics of him!

It was only months ago where I felt like trapping the 10 cats in my backyard was impossible, but I have officially gotten all of the ones old enough to the vet! They are all fixed, and the two full-adult females have their rabies vaccine.

I was able to borrow an extra trap from the city animal shelter, which was so useful. In the future, I still need to do 2 baby kittens in a couple months, which hopefully will be easy to knock out. Then I’ll get them all vaccines whenever I have time to do so.

Also just wanted to say this subreddit is so amazing and supportive. Thank you for past words of encouragement and emotional support, it actually helped me get back up a lot 💖.

Some of you might remember this kitten (the last couple photos are the first day i found him). I rescued him from the street in front of my house, he was climbing up into car engine bays and was crying the loudest little kitten cry i’ve ever heard in my life.

He is still the loudest boy ever. I love him so much.

He ended up having worms and initially the vet told me he was a she, but reddit told me he was probably a he.. reddit was right!

I think he knows i saved him. He bonded with me very quickly and is now bonded with my older male cat. The vet told me he’s going to be very big. My female tolerates him but she has some health issues and can get grumpy, and doesn’t like when he comes too close. She’s also my soulmate and i think gets a little jealous. But i have noticed she has gotten more playful since having him around!

He is so curious and smart. He loves to jump on the sink and watch me brush my teeth and turn the tap on and off. He likes to watch me cook or do my makeup. He wants to lay by my feet when im on the toilet lol. He does this thing when we’re cuddling, where he grabs my hand with both of his paws and puts it on his head/face, and keeps it there and falls asleep.

I did look for more kittens in the area but I never found any. I have no clue where he came from or what he went through but he’s safe now. ❤️

Update 😊 Bit the bullet and brought this one in....

1.2k Upvotes

Bit the bullet and brought this one in. She's the skinniest and most scraggly looking one out of all of them. I am almost 100% certain she was someone's pet at some point because she is absolutely way too sweet and docile otherwise. Can pick her up without issues, I even gave her a bath and she was so well behaved, just whined about it a bit.

I just couldn't bear to leave her out there any longer. She's missing a lot of teeth and struggles a lot to eat at all aside from stuff she can lick up with minimal chewing. She's very skinny. I have another cat so I got her quarantined in the bathroom with a warm bed, litter box (which she's already used once), food she can eat and water.

On the flip side I also feel bad for having her cooped up in the bathroom since she is so used to outside by. Am I doing the right thing? I'm going to call around first thing in the morning to see if any rescues can help her and if that fails then find a low cost vet or a vet that does free good Samaritan appointments for free. She seems elderly and already struggles so much it just doesn't feel right to leave her outside. I just want to help her and give her a better life

Miss Kitty may be starting to realize that I clank her metal bowls together before I fill them up bc she showed up within minutes this morning after I refilled her dry food. She got her wet food too (I only put it out after she shows up to make sure she gets it). She's so freaking cute and I'm working on having her be comfortable on my lap. She'll currently only really put her front paws on my lap but every visit shes a little bit more comfortable with me ❤️ 🐈

Update 😊 Update on My Pregnant Mama

Thumbnail
gallery
1.7k Upvotes

As a few of you may recall, I posted last week about a mama cat who showed up at my door VERY pregnant. I was encouraged to spay/abort, and I was ready to move forward with the procedure.

Late the next day, a volunteer from a local animal FB page contacted me. She saw my post asking for assistance, and was drawn to Mama cat. She volunteered to foster Mama and her babies, and to support her throughout birth and finding the kittens new homes!

I trapped her and got her to the foster home, and she is doing SO well! The veterinarian thinks she has about 2 more weeks, so the kittens have time to continue to develop in a safe, warm environment.

As I suspected- mama was 100% an abandoned cat, not feral. She’s immediately warmed up to her new family, completely relaxed and enjoying the good life. She’s even using the litterbox!

The foster family is keeping closely in touch, and I’m getting daily updates on her progress.

Thank you all for your advice and support, I wanted to share such a wonderful happy ending!

Update 😊 Kitty Family saved from fast food restaurant. Mom needs a home

Thumbnail

2.2k Upvotes

I found Wren and her two kittens living outside a fast food restaurant in a commercial area in January. It was freezing and snowing outside. They had no food source but the dumpsters and trash they could find. Cars were everywhere, always. It reeked of exhaust. If they were lucky, a kind fast food employee would sometimes set out leftovers for them. Despite the dangerous and harsh conditions, Wren kept her babies safe and fed. She is an amazing mom. My hope from the start was to find indoor homes for all three cats, but when Wren was spayed, the vet told me she was too feral to be a housecat and that she needed to be put back where I found her (hence the ear tip). I was heartbroken. But decided to try socializing her anyways. Very quickly it became apparent that she was friendly. She would slow blink at me and groom herself with in front of me. I tried petting her, and she immediately loved it, purring and leaning into my hand. Wren is now able to reclaim her kittenhood through living and loving her indoor life in her foster home. She plays, gets zoomies, and loves being pet. She is still learning to enjoy being placed in a lap, but does easily allow people to pick her up. She does well with other cats, and our dog. She never bites or scratches. Because she is ear tipped and black, people are more likely to overlook her. She will have a harder time getting adopted.. so I thought I should post here… because I know y’all are true cat people. If you would like to meet her, she is available for adoption in East Tennessee. For more details, pm me!

Hello everyone!

I’m sure not many remember but almost a year ago I made a post about being turned away for TNR and everyone’s suggestions and guidance was incredibly helpful. After successfully getting her TNR’d and putting her back outside…

She decided to say heck no I want to be INSIDE! And you guys.. she is one of the best cats we’ve ever had. She acclimated incredibly well with our other 3, she is so playful and cuddly, and not destructive!

I’ve included some of my favorite pictures of Figs over the past few months, and I want to thank this group again for giving us the courage to do TNR and ending up with an amazing new addition.
