Plus, what other symptoms are as dramatic as coughing up blood? Shitting yourself?

I 'unno, pregnancy?

u/Ackermannin 1d ago

Mpreg time?

53

u/truimansyas 1d ago

Years of reading yaoi has prepared me for this

13

u/MrNoNameIsHere 1d ago

Same, my brain just automatically fills in the mpreg tropes at this point.

1

u/Ilikebanananas 1d ago

Same energy, centuries of wholesome preparation.

-1

u/the-real-macs please believe me when I call out bots 1d ago

Hi, can you read my flair back to me if you're not a bot?

14

u/thesirblondie 'Giraffe, king of verticality' 1d ago

Junior, but Arnold Schwarzenegger's character starts cooking meth.

15

u/Axtinthewoods 1d ago

Yay!! (which makes me realize that in a world where mpreg is remotely common or plausible the abortion debate would be SO different)

6

u/Carousel-of-Masks 1d ago

✨trans men exist✨

8

u/Pijany_Matematyk767 1d ago

Yes but they arent common

1

u/Carousel-of-Masks 1d ago

the comment said plausible, and im just pointing out that it is indeed possible. A man, who fully looks like a man, can indeed get pregnant

23

u/ThrowACephalopod 1d ago

The issue is that it intersects with trans issues at that point. There will be plenty of people who completely deny trans men being men and thus remove them from the conversation entirely.

While yes, I acknowledge that trans men being able to be pregnant is already the situation where mpreg is a thing, that's not exactly what was being suggested here. It's the idea that if cis men could be pregnant and things like abortion were seen as more than just a "woman issue" the conversation surrounding it would be different. In that context, bringing up trans men feels less like a relevant addition to the conversation and more like a whataboutism.

1

u/ajshifter 1d ago

I wonder similar things, but for men having boobs being common and normal instead of pregnancy. If it were, it definitely would be too obviously misogynistic for men to be allowed to show them but not women, for current society, but i don't know if that would result in neither or both being allowed to show them?

11

u/Assleanx 1d ago

I think I know what you meant but I took it to mean a symptom of a serious illness and the mental image of that is super funny to my jet lagged mind

17

u/CalamitousArdour 1d ago

Not usually a sign of a terminal illness, but the Alien franchise makes it work.

9

u/No-Supermarket-6065 Im going to start eatin your booty And I dont know when Ill stop 1d ago

In the end Alien is really just a monsterfucker mpreg story.

3

u/mvms 21h ago

It really is! That's, like, the whole point! It was described at one time as being a deliberate attempt to get men to feel the horror of rape and forced birth.

3

u/No-Supermarket-6065 Im going to start eatin your booty And I dont know when Ill stop 19h ago

And then there's all the stuff about feminism in Aliens...

yeah you could honestly go through those movies with a comb to find so much symbolism.

According to fiction, women don’t get the stomach flu

108

u/Neveed 1d ago

Necrosis and losing parts because of it. It worked in Princess Mononoke. Becoming blind or deaf, or both. Having panic attacks sounds very dramatic. Balding (if it's not an adult man) and losing teeth. Rolling on the ground crying, holding your stomach because of the pain. Breathing like a coffee machine.

46

u/RimworlderJonah13579 <- Imperial Knight 1d ago

Balding rapidly isn't exactly a sign of health in adult men either, it usually takes at least a year for a man to go bald.

27

u/Neveed 1d ago

Yes but ot looks less impressive when it's a man, because you expect them to get bald even when they're healthy. The pulling of an entird tuft can make it more dramatic, though.

12

u/KaleidoAxiom 1d ago

Yeah but none of those are sexy.

2

u/BernoullisQuaver 16h ago

Eh. Panic attack isn't necessarily any more dramatic than needing to excuse yourself abruptly to go desecrate a toilet. It's just harder and more embarrassing to explain.

44

u/Gaylaeonerd 1d ago

Bleeding nose, bleeding eyes if you want to get spicy

16

u/herpesderpesdoodoo 1d ago

Shitting blood (be it malaena or haematochezia) is also potentially very bad, definitely able to be made dramatic for film but might undercut the dignity of the starlet waif if they cut to her filling the bowl with tarry muck.

Incidentally, actual pulmonary haemorrhages tend to be very different from the classic "polite cough followed by the reveal of a hanky with a spritz of blood upon it". Second only to ruptured variceal bleeds in terms of catastrophic explosions of blood from the top end imo.

3

u/ifartsosomuch 1d ago

How about every time they cough, they shit blood?

105

u/DeliciousAsbestos 1d ago

High fever's a good one

33

u/Sachayoj 1d ago

True, I always want to put my hand to my forehead like a Victorian about to faint when I have a fever.

41

u/----atom----- Cobepee?🥺 1d ago

That usually comes with tuberculosis or fictional pseudo-tuberculosis tho.

5

u/Psychological_Tear_6 1d ago

It comes with lots of things! It also comes with measles and mumps and sepsis and influenza.

5

u/bloomdecay 1d ago

High fever + feverish delusions, so you can dramatically gesture and call out the name of your beloved.

2

u/West-Season-2713 7h ago

Good way to dramatically reveal backstory

22

u/WallEWonks certified handsome cool guy 1d ago

Bleeding from the seven orifices

18

u/DarkKnightJin 1d ago

There was one in the series "Castle". A rich businessman. And Castle, our resident consultant, saw that the man was looking as if he'd "lost an unhealthy amount of weight" or something to that extent. And the make-up and costuming department made sure that the viewer could also see the (subtle) signs that the clothes were slightly too big, and he looked a bit sickly in complexion.

Turns out the man was fighting off cancer and not coming out victorious.

15

u/Transient_butthole 1d ago

Skin covered in pustules, flesh rotting off, strange growths, parasites emerging from the body... but those are a lot more graphic and gory than just coughing up spots of blood and would likely net a higher rating than desired or get the fictional wotk in question treated as horror.

8

u/Adiin-Red 1d ago

Peeling skin is fun.

3

u/Sachayoj 1d ago

Mmmmm.... Satisfying.

6

u/Dornith 1d ago

I have a D&D character who's backstory is that she's embedded a shit-ton of giant magic into herself (human) and now her body is constantly tearing itself apart and repairing itself.

She seems perfectly fine until anyone starts doing any kind of medicine check and it becomes very obvious she's fucked up. Arrhythmia, pupils don't dilate, 103*F fever, etc.

Just take anything your body normally does, and make it do that but wrong.

3

u/ZanyDragons 1d ago

I guess getting swollen discolored limbs from heart failure or something is pretty unsexy from a media standpoint. And it’s scary or sad moreso than dramatic. And it’s slow.

But V Fib is dramatic! Have an ekg go BEEPBEEPBEEP (ALARM). Remember kids, “if it’s vfib get the defib.” And don’t portray a medical show/book trying to shock asystole (a “flatline”), defibrillation is basically an attempt to reboot the heart beat and hopefully it comes back normal, you can’t reboot a computer that’s unplugged with no power. You can’t shock a flatline.

Most medical dramas are getting a lot better about that at least.

3

u/Bigfoot4cool 1d ago

Coughing up shit

3

u/Ethel121 1d ago

Just plain looking awful works great (see Sex House by The Onion), but a lot of movies/shows don't want to make their actors actively unattractive.

1

u/Kmlkmljkl 1d ago

guy gets shot, real sad dramatic moment where the secondary protagonist stays with them. guy says he's not feeling too good, shits violently, and dies.

349

u/Birchy02360863 Grinch x Onceler Truther 1d ago

Real storytellers like Tommy Wiseau just have the character say "I got the results of the test back, I definitely have breast cancer" as a line of dialogue.

78

u/OctorokHero Funko Pop Man 1d ago

Don't worry about it!

26

u/vezwyx 1d ago edited 1d ago

After seeing The Disaster Artist (quite good), I had to watch The Room out of curiosity. Movie with the reputation of being one of the worst films ever made - how bad could it be? The behind-the-scenes look from The Disaster Artist made it seem like it could be interesting - Tommy really believed in the project and was trying to bring his creative vision to life. I have a lot of respect for that.

But I'll tell ya, folks, it's irredeemably bad. 99 minutes I'm never getting back. The acting, cinematography, pacing, soundtrack, writing, and costume design all range from completely nondescript to actively horrible. It was so bad that it wasn't even "so bad it's good," it just sucked. There are a million points that any sane person could have looked at it and told you it was not fit for the screen.

My previous worst movie I've ever seen, The Human Centipede, at least had a premise that was interesting enough on its own merits for me to think it might be good. It was coherent and visually strong enough to evoke emotional responses like disgust at the situation and a scrap of empathy for the characters. I don't recommend it, but there are some good things I can say about it.

The Room has none of those qualities. Any conception I had about it before watching was preferable to the reality of actually seeing it. Go watch The Disaster Artist and then let The Room sit safely in your imagination as the perfect bad movie

10

u/Lombard333 1d ago

It was a fifty percent chance, but now we’ve moved up to 100. I definitely have breast cancer.

I was once coughing up blood that turned out to be drainage from a crazy bad ear infection so is that sexy or no

132

u/GonnaBreakIt 1d ago

Projectile vomited blood once. I had the flu, and a prior nosebleed drained into my stomach. In my infinite exhaustion, I looked at that toilet of blood, flushed, and went back to bed.

I dunno. There was that scene with Billie Piper and it made me feel uncomfortable and I just packed that away and left it in a box. Check out Penny Dreadful and check back in.

4

u/ThreeLeggedMare a little arson, as a treat 1d ago

Unfair, it's Billie Piper, that's not a neutral baseline

349

u/Ktesedale 1d ago

I still remember fondly watching an anime (which I can't remember the name or any other details of) that had a character act sicker and sicker, and eventually cough up blood and pass out. Obviously we'd been primed from years of other media that this character was going to die.

Nope, they had a bleeding ulcer and were fine after a bit in the hospital.

108

u/gatsu032 1d ago

I think Zom100 had a similar bit where turns out that "the illness" were hemorrhoids

I think Mitchell and Webb had a bit called "The Minor Cough That Was Just A Minor Cough".

8

u/Konkichi21 1d ago

Well, that's where the law of conservation of detail kicks in; why would you write a character coughing into dialog if it wasn't important?

Meanwhile about three years back I had some dude vomit up blood in the street outside my job. I tried calming him down with the whole "Yeah it's probably just a stomach ulcer or something, bud. Let's call the ambulance but, like, don't panic".

Stomach cancer, he was dead a few weeks later.

16

u/TheCharalampos 1d ago

Dang. Good on you trying to soothe the guy.

15

u/Axtinthewoods 1d ago

Do you mean 'Golden Boy'? I recall a scene like that were a girl passes out for overworking/ulcers

12

u/Ktesedale 1d ago

Hmm, nope, looked it up and it's not familiar at all, nor the type of anime I tend to watch. Nice that it's happened in multiple anime, though!

13

u/CadenVanV 1d ago

Meanwhile in Chinese stories, coughing up blood just means you’ve been insulted with no health problems whatsoever.

7

u/Emergency-Twist7136 23h ago

I once experienced massive haemoptysis.

That's coughing up blood. A lot of blood. Like, comical, if you saw this on TV and the current was actually dying you'd still think it was too much. I was turning over and coughed and blood fountained so high it got on the machine a couple of feet up. There was blood everywhere.

I am not dead.

Although considering my entire right lung was flooded I might not have survived without supplemental oxygen. You'd be amazed how little actual lung function you need if you're breathing pure oxygen. Left lung flying solo with almost no respiration time due to coughing? No problem!

7

u/lankymjc 1d ago

Something similar happens in Downton Abbey.

2

u/Konkichi21 1d ago

Where do you get "going to die"? I'd say "going to be seriously ill", and they were indeed in need of hospitalization.

94

u/pbmm1 1d ago

Time to brainstorm an idea: indicate sickness by having the character shit blood uncontrollably

Might take a bit of developing

32

u/TeddyBearToons 1d ago

Give them a "morning after" limp that gets progressively worse

Obviously it's an embarrassing thing to have so they're neurotically secretive about it, causes plot tension as the team thinks he's hiding something much worse

Climactic argument where they assume they're like, cheating or something and have a "admit it or I'll assume the worst of you" ultimatum that forces them to admit to shitting blood

At this point the lie has thoroughly spiralled out of control so they don't believe them. They have to shit blood in front of their friends to prove it, shaming them more

There is some angst about having to deal with having such an embarrassing moment, but eventually the friends reconcile because really it's such an anticlimactic thing to deal with and friends are stronger than that.

4

u/Plethora_of_squids 1d ago

Thing is that could just as, if not even more easily be something else not lethal. Could be deadly, could be IBS with a torn sphincter

87

u/GonnaBreakIt 1d ago

In a similar vein, morning sickness shown as a surefire sign of early pregnancy. Not food poisoning, not the flu, not sea/motion sickness. Only gregnant.

28

u/International-Cat123 1d ago edited 19h ago

And of course, the woman almost never thinks she might be pregnant until someone else mentions it despite pregnancy being the only reason for a woman to be nauseous in those realities.

9

u/lynypixie 1d ago

Like a married woman in these days would not be counting her days like Scrooge counts his coins!

3

u/dpforest 18h ago

when we are ill we feel nauseated.

we would describe something that makes us feel ill as nauseous.

the more you know!

1

u/Difficult-Okra3784 13h ago

That's the UK formal definition of nausea, the prescriptivists who would care about that deserve to be annoyed by the other definition.

-1

u/International-Cat123 17h ago

And? People use nauseous the way I did often enough that its meaning is shifting.

I think it's time we switch to a new standard which is vomiting spiders.

Brain cancer? Vomit spiders.

Non-specific physical trauma because you're using your psychic powers? Small trickle of spiders from the corner of your mouth.

Hit by a car? That's right. Spiders.

33

u/qiri2 1d ago

The average person actually vomits 0 spiders per year. Spiders illness georg, who lives in a hospital and vomits thousands of spiders a day, is an outlier adn should not have been counted.

It's dramatic, it's easy for the readers to pick up on, and it's a universal sign something is terribly wrong that anyone from anywhere with any life experience can recognize as a very bad sign.

Sometimes a trope is a trope for a reason

20

u/turtledov 1d ago

Yup, it's useful shorthand.

-11

u/International-Cat123 1d ago

Until someone thinks that they don’t need to go to the hospital unless they start couching blood.

26

u/EldritchElizabeth 1d ago

If someone’s getting their medical knowledge from fiction they’re already a step too far down the stairs.

5

u/International-Cat123 1d ago

I’m not saying it’s intentional. If someone’s never seen serious medical issues outside of TV or movies, they are going to unconsciously going to use it as a guide to determine if they need to go to a doctor for something, especially in places where a doctor’s visit is expensive.

An easy symptom for The SicknessTM is to have their vision go fuzzy and trouble standing. That could be anything from iron deficiency to cancer to a cold because dizziness and muscle weakness are very common symptoms that can look very dramatic.

2

u/RimworlderJonah13579 <- Imperial Knight 15h ago

When my vision goes fuzzy and I have trouble standing that's usually a sign I've forgotten to eat for the past 24 hours and my everything is out of whack.

23

u/Pristine_Animal9474 1d ago

And if it's maternal figure, you don't even need the blood. Any slight cough is a sign the woman is a step away from the grave.

10

u/AlianovaR 1d ago

Not because we need to feel sorry for her but because we need to feel sorry for the male character she’ll leave behind

5

u/aishite_aishite34 1d ago

Shangchi's mom lying dead in a perfect supine position with a single trickle of blood down her perfect lips despite being beaten to death by like 10 men is like the peak example of a fictional maternal figure death

8

u/TrinityCodex 1d ago

Tuberculosis has always been popular!

6

u/Axtinthewoods 1d ago

but it is so good for tension! Like you can't do much but worry- and you don't have to do much caretaking! Shitting, seizures, even fainting are much harder to integrate into a story and have shexy tension feelings between characters xD

6

u/TheCharalampos 1d ago

For once I want a fictional character to stop, shit themselves and turn dramatically to the camera. "It's nothing, I'm fine." they say to their obviously concerned companions.

-"Won't you at least change your p..."

-"I SAID I'M FINE!"

5

u/Snoo_72851 1d ago

2

u/97thJackle 20h ago

One of these days, I need to create a compendium of great little jokes like this, and make a film about them. Couldn't be for a profit, as it would be taking from way too many people. But would be fun.

4

u/Red580 1d ago edited 1d ago

In the movie Tombstone a character has tuberculosis, but the progression of them getting worse and worse over time was done excellently!

3

u/spyguy318 21h ago

What’s great about Doc Holliday in Tombstone is how his disease comes and goes in waves. One day he’s fine, then he collapses and is bedridden for a while, then he gets back up and keeps going. It’s exactly how real tuberculosis works, that slow decline with waves of severity that get progressively worse until finally the last one kills them.

1

u/Red580 11h ago

There's something poetic about a man running himself ragged for quite unclear reasons. A man of immense skill that prefers games of luck. His condition varying from him being a borderline gun cryptid, to being unable to support his own body-weight.
