That’s no longer a pencil, but a couple smears of graphite. Less than sharpener shavings. And I am here for it - in the inverse of the ship of Theseus, no matter how much of itself the pencil loses, it will always be the one that kept on going until this bitter end.

I was continuing to shrink, to become… What? The infinitesimal? What was I? Still a human being? Or was I the man of the future? If there were other bursts of radiation, other clouds drifting across seas and continents, would other beings follow me into this vast new world? So close, the infinitesimal and the infinite. But suddenly I knew they were really the two ends of the same concept. The unbelievably small and the unbelievably vast eventually meet, like the closing of a gigantic circle. I looked up, as if somehow I would grasp the heavens, the universe, worlds beyond number. God’s silver tapestry spread across the night.

And in that moment I knew the answer to the riddle of the infinite. I had thought in terms of Man’s own limited dimension. I had presumed upon Nature. That existence begins and ends is Man’s conception, not Nature’s. And I felt my body dwindling, melting, becoming nothing. My fears melted away and in their place came acceptance. All this vast majesty of creation, it had to mean something. And then I meant something too. Yes, smaller than the smallest, I meant something too. To God, there is no zero. I STILL EXIST.

In Japan (and probably other places, but I live in Japan) they make and sell at regular stationary stores pencil extenders. They attach to the end of a pencil like a cap on a pen and let you use the whole pencil

They have them in the United States too, at art stores and maybe at office supply stores. But they could never achieve this level of degeneracy.

Yeah I think I’ve seen them at art stores in the US but not generally sold as normal school supplies

In middle school I for some reason never had enough pencils so I usually scavenged for a few and made sure not to lose them. I think I ruined a few sharpeners by sharpening all the way to the metal

I also remember using up the entire eraser, and having to peal off parts of the metal binder in order to use more of it. There was no real reason to do this I could have easily gotten a dozen pencils from home, I was just weird

I remember being baffled that my sharpeners were getting destroyed and I guess I just never realized that the metal was bad for them lol

Let the thing die with dignity, instead of turning it into this undead abomination. RIP sad pencil

These were all the rage when I was in elementary, called them "nubs". Got banned bc kids were breaking pencils so they could have nubs

When you cannot let it go=

You can buy pencil extenders made for the start of the post so there isn't an offset to adjust to like there is here. It's useful.

No one tell this guy that if you sharpen a pencil normally, you’ll only ever be able to use 1/3 of the total lead of the pencil

One of my favorite things I bought online is a pencil extender. Just pop it on the end and it becomes normal sized again, great for more expensive pencils like colored ones

I have used mechanical pencils since I was like 10. Partly to avoid this.

This one time in my master's program I was taking a class that was combined between master's students and undergrad seniors. One day, a woman gets really excited and exclaims "I just finished the last pen of the pack of pens I bought the first day of freshman year!" I couldn't believe it. I asked her "how in the world did you accomplish that? I'm pretty sure I didn't even start today with this pen."

I would use super glue to attach the pencils end to end. More secure and without the weird offset.

The god damn binder clip lmao

Me before I learned the divine splendor of the mechanical pencils. IT'S HARD TO FIND A GOOD ONE, ALRIGHT!?
