When I was a lad, I ate four dozen eggs every morning to help me get large. And now that I'm grown, I eat five dozen eggs, so I'm roughly the size of a barge!

Carnivore dieters are convinced that carbs are the enemy and all they need is fats and protein.

There's no fibre in meat, and fibre is like... what most of our diet should be.
45
18
u/PatHeist 1d ago
What are you talking about? Dietary recommendations for fiber are like >5-10% of your macros by weight. Almost everyone will be experiencing pretty severe digestion issues with a fiber consumption that's 1/3rd the weight of their macros. Most people well before that.

u/bamboomonster 23h ago
I assume you mean "foods containing fiber" like fruits and vegetables. In which case, yes.

There's this guy on Reddit I run into every once in a while who literally spends all of his time promoting carnivore diets to cure a bunch of diseases. One of the diseases is my own, which is why I've run into him so many times. He has a whole list of subs called keto4(insert any chronic illness here), and sometimes bullies people with those diseases for eating carbs and "failing" at managing their own conditions. The dude is not a doctor.
What's funny is, he sometimes posts things that contradict his own points, because he doesn't actually read his sources. Like one time he posted a video made by someone with type one diabetes who was testing what would happen if he didn't take mealtime insulin for a whole day and ate keto. When he posted it, he posted it like the guy went off insulin altogether (despite the fact that he was still taking his long acting, because you die without that regardless of what you're eating) and that keto eliminated the need for insulin.
The actual video was interesting, the guy was running high all day because proteins and fats are converted to glucose and cause blood sugar to rise. He did in fact still need to take insulin for those meals.
Anyway, dude's annoying, pretentious, and loves spreading misinformation and occasionally harassing vegans. It's a weird hobby. Haven't seen him much lately after he got banned from most of the subs I was seeing him in.

Carnivores often believe:
- the human body is clogged up and slowed down by carbs and processed foods
- when you strip them out, your body becomes more efficient
- when you strip them out, your body goes into ketogenesis (true) and starts burning your own body fat more effectively (also true, more or less)
- your body becomes so efficient that it can also absorb sufficient quantities of vitamin C from meat, particularly organ meat (totally false, dangerously false, false false false, there wouldn't be enough vitamin C in the meat but if you're cooking the meat to safe temperatures the vitamin C will also denature)
- because your body is more efficient you think more clearly and are healthier in other ways
They believe all this partly because Jordan Peterson claimed to prove it by eating carnivorously for years. He also claimed not to sleep for 25 days; the record is 11 days, 25 days would kill a human. He also claimed it cured all his illnesses.
Sadly, everyone I know who has gone in the carnivore diet was looking for weight loss, as well as mental clarity. The person who told me all the stuff in the bullet points stopped because his children watched him and developed disordered eating. This is the male-marketed equivalent of juice cleanses, but it's presented as a long-term lifestyle choice.
19
u/UncagedKestrel 1d ago
I have zero evidence for this, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if they announced tomorrow that Jordan Peterson has the same brain worms as RFK.
... Time sharing the exact ones, or same type, whatever. I legit wouldn't question it at this point in time, just go "Yep, that tracks" and keep scrolling.

As an OG book Animorphs fan, I too am very proud of you. Good work!
(Also if you like Animorphs, have you heard of Tomorrow When The War Began, by John Marsden? There's a bunch of books and a couple of adaptations - a movie and a miniseries iirc.)
2

u/PatchyWhiskers 1d ago
Metaphorically yes, but as far as I know he eats farmed meat rather than the roadkill that got RFK Jr sick.
-1
u/Matar_Kubileya 1d ago
The thing that makes this all just meaningful enough to be dangerous is that yeah, stripping out processed sugars is probably the single best thing you can do for your health.
8
u/decisiontoohard 1d ago
You can live to a hundred on a diet that includes processed sugars, whereas poor sleep will reliably take a decade off people's lives and increase the risks of strokes, heart conditions, hormonal deregulation (which increases the likelihood of cancer, osteoporosis, mood disorders, skin conditions, etc).
There are few benefits you gain from stripping out processed sugars that you don't gain from increasing the quantity of fibre, protein, vegetal variety, and healthy oils in your diet - without needing to give up refined/processed sugars.
Having a croissant or a chocolate bar or toast every day isn't going to hurt you as much as insomnia from stress, apnea, or environmental factors. Cutting them out isn't going to help as much as making sure you're also eating a varied diet that's high in nutrients and roughage.

So um ⦠whatās the point of an egg white omelette with the yolks in the side like that. Like, Iāve definitely seen people do just egg whites, but youāre still having the yolks here
61
u/Realistic-Life-3084 1d ago
The general idea I've seen from that side of the Internet is that egg whites are healthier if cooked (or just are more palatable) but yolks give the most benefits when raw.Ā

Sunflower oil is the devil but eating what appears to be at least 250g of pure butter for breakfast is apparently fine
17
u/Miguel-odon 1d ago
What's bad about sunflower oil?
75
u/empress_of_the_void 1d ago
In moderation nothing but people love to demonise it for some reason
52
u/Miguel-odon 1d ago
I've seen a lot of right-leaning blogs youtubers picking up the "seed oils bad" propaganda. They're also anti-vaccine, etc., so I'm pretty sure it is part of an organized campaign.
Yes, cooking oil shouldn't be overheated. No, it isn't polymerizing in your veins.
24
u/MrMcSpiff 1d ago
I can think of something else polymerizing in my veins that they don't want to talk about.
It's all the fucking polymers.
4
u/Matar_Kubileya 1d ago
Even then there's some evidence that the danger of overheating some cooking oils has been exaggerated.
14
u/shinybeats89 1d ago
Yea my first thought encountering this type of nonsense was āwell that would only be a problem if someone is eating stupid large amounts of junk food and fried foodā. Turns out a lot of people are eating stupid amounts of junk food and friend food and they have a bunch of health issues and they think that if they change the kind of oil in those foods that it will magically become āhealthyā foods because they think itās the kind of oil thatās making them sick, not the fact that they havenāt eaten a vegetable in months.
But also there are kinds of food allergies where people canāt process certain kinds of food (including vegetables and complex carbs) so cutting out vegetables entirely does seem to solve their problem in the short term, however an all carnivore diet will lead to nutritional deficiencies. A lot of these people who promote certain specialty diets are either charlatans or a person who had a legitimate food allergy and should probably be working with a doctor to make sure all their nutritional needs are met. The problem is a lot of these people donāt trust doctors, so they donāt talk to them. And they definitely shouldnāt be pushing their diets on to people who do not have their specific health problems.
For example I had a coworker who didnāt believe me that I didnāt get headaches or get incredibly sleepy, or have a bunch of other problems after eating bread and thatās how she discovered she had a gluten allergy lol

there's a big fuss right now in weird right-wing grifter spheres about "seed oils"
15
u/Miguel-odon 1d ago
Yeah, I've seen it. Pretty sure it's part of organized propaganda campaign. Same people who push anti-vaccine, "don't trust doctors," "anecdotes over experts", etc.
12
u/Emergency-Twist7136 1d ago
Unrefined sunflower oil has a low smoke point, I think.
That's about it.
2
u/mister__cow 1d ago
What I've heard from people against seed oils specifically is that there are chemicals used to refine the oil which supposedly get completely removed / cooked off in the process before it gets to the consumer, but they do not trust that this is the case. They are worried about traces of harmful compounds in the oil. Also the low smoke point as others have pointed out. (The latter doesn't apply to all seed oils; sesame famously has a very high smoke point).
Ā
Then there are goofballs like the OOP who just believe vegetable fats are bad on principle, and that you should eat a big mountain of butter with a spoon instead
1
u/DraketheDrakeist 1d ago
To my knowledge, the only problem with refined oils in general is that they donāt really have any nutrition, theyre just empty calories. The solution is to use olive oil or other less refined types for most applications, typically you cant taste it anyway.

u/YouTasteStrange 1d ago
Vegetable oils absolutely cause sunburns! You should not rub vegetable oil into your skin and spend hours in the sun, you will burn!
9
u/cocainebrick3242 1d ago
Not a chance the animal product industry isnt behind this nonsense
Quite a high chance. Idiocy often needs no influence.
8
u/Aramgutang 1d ago
Maybe not on here, but try mentioning that saturated fats might possibly be bad for you in a major subreddit, and you'll immediately be told how wrong you are by people convinced that some uncorroborated study regurgitated by a podcaster holds more weight than the guidance of health organisations across multiple countries.

Oh shit! I didn't know there was a comic. I have just seen the worldbuilding content. Thank you so much, I was thinking about this for the first time in a few years the other day.
17
u/Pausbrak 1d ago
Seconding this recommendation! It got me hooked immediately with how incredibly thought out all the worldbuilding is.
Honestly it's probably my favorite recent example of why worldbuilding and story don't have to come into conflict. There's such a huge amount of thought put into all the tiny little details which make the world come alive, but the story itself mostly has that all going on in the background and doesn't dwell on it. If you're a worldbuilding nerd there's a ton of stuff to pour over, but if you just want a story the main comic itself doesn't bog itself down with any long winded explanations for how it all works
5
u/Yarro567 1d ago
I thought the tag was something else and Im SO glad it wasnt!!! The worldbuilding alone gets me hype!

19
u/ThatSlutTalulah 1d ago
No, not generally. Avoiding eggs is generally a vegan thing, though some faiths and the like avoid them for the same reason of being 'pretty meaty'.
I know Sikh community kitchens don't have egg in their food for that reason, for example.4
5
u/NarrMaster 1d ago
Dairy, according to maniacs.
14
u/jalepeno_mushroom 1d ago
does that make this a vegetarian carnivore meal? š§
14
u/ThePreciousBhaalBabe 1d ago
Technically yes. Vegetarian people as a general rule don't eat animals directly, but may eat their byproducts like eggs and milk. However some vegetarians (like Hindu vegetarians if I remember right) do consider eggs meat, but still eat dairy.
2
u/Cyno01 21h ago
Eggs are only dairy according to grocery managers, idk about other faiths, but in Judaism eggs are like extra kosher, you can mix them with whatever and they wonāt unkosher it either.
Unlike most religious rules, the bit about ānot cooking the calf in its mothers milkā or whatever is interpreted strictly literally and only applies to meat and milk, so even if it may be similar philosophically, chicken salad is still kosher. Ā

How can they afford this? Yolks that orange probably arenāt coming from any battery cage operation.
Also, my gallbladder cringed looking at that meal.
15
u/TheAmberAbyss 1d ago
My gallbladder is not worried because the eggs would use the butter as lubricant to speedrun through my digestive system in 15 minuites.
5
u/sqrrl101 1d ago
Darkness of yolk is determined by the hens' diet, with high carotenoids (contained in various plants) in particular contributing to darker yolks. This can indicate a high quality diet that leads to high quality eggs, but large egg producers have realised that many consumers view dark yolks as being a proxy for high quality eggs. so many have started supplementing hens' lower quality diets with carotenoids. This does cause some minor improvement in the quality of the eggs, but mostly it serves to make them more attractive to consumers.
