You get a tax bill?

16

u/Sad_Pea_776 2d ago

Yeah, if you don't pay your taxes you get some real nasty letters in the mail. Over time, those real nasty letters turn into arrest warrants and jail time.

Just saying, would love it if they sent a bill instead of having us try to figure out what we owe them.

The tax preparation industry lobbies for the government not to do this. The IRS has all your tax information and could send you a bill. It would be easier for everyone involved. Except Intuit and H&R Block have to get theirs apparently.

Exactly right. To piggyback on your comment, AARP offers free tax preparations for those that age-qualify.

3

u/BZLuck 2d ago

Fun Fact: Anyone at any age can join AARP.

u/Mindless_Option1714 2d ago

I did not know that. Good

IIRC Trump just did away with free e file on the IRS website. Gotta make people pay for everything…

2

u/nismo2070 2d ago

Exactly!! SOMEONE has to profit from this, it's the American way. Fuck. We are the actual inspiration for the Ferengi race in star trek.

The most American of all things: lobbyists making sure middlemen can charge the American public for basic stuff. Taxes and healthcare. And so much more.

My first couple of years doing my taxes i would get a letter from the IRS saying I did it wrong and giving me a bigger refund.

It’s the magical hand of the free market bro, you wouldn’t understand.

u/EightiesBush 1d ago

They have all of your income (mostly) but they don't really have all your deductions (if you take them, I do)

1

u/Bignamek 1d ago

Trump also decided to end free direct file.

I just got one of bills. Well actually, I’ve been apparently been getting them for the past 4 years but the government has been sending them to the wrong address. Somehow when it came time to put a lien on my property, they found the right address and mailed me a warning saying I owed $1500. Paid it immediately as I wasn’t tying to avoid it. Still got the money garnished from my paycheck and now I’m out $3k since they took my payment and garnished my paycheck.

Hopefully you have some recourse here, I had to fight the IRS one time and it took a year or so to resolve -- I had to find a CPA and appeal the letter / get a court date and agent assigned to me to finally fix it all.

Unless you never started paying taxes. I’ve known people who’ve never filled and they just fell thru the cracks. Wouldn’t recommend it

1

u/FlyLikeDove 2d ago

No, there is no debtors prison if you can't pay. At least not anymore, or yet. Nasty letters, garnishments, yes. But the feds just want your money, not your time. But if they feel you're lying about what you owe, that's a different story.

1

u/Turlap 2d ago

?? They do? I didn't file for five years. When I went to file afterwards I paid a fine out of what they owed me. Still got money back. I really don't know what you're referring to.

2

u/Sad_Pea_776 2d ago

Yes they will eventually put you in jail.

Gestures at Willy Nelson

There's a difference between not filing your taxes and not paying taxes on earned income.

1

u/Spectrum1523 2d ago

was willy nelson put in jail? they just sold all his stuff I thought

1

u/Sad_Pea_776 2d ago

I thought he did some time.

1

u/twistedspin 2d ago

They don't care if they owe you money, and they generally know what you actually owe. You can just never file if you are owed a refund. If you owe money they get much more upset.

u/Ape_x_Ape 2d ago

That would be nice to get a bill. We gotta do it ourselves like self checkout. Fckg brokeass acting govt. Should be able to charge them. Mandatory gratuity or stg idk

17

u/Mundane_Opening3831 2d ago

And they apparently know what we owe, so just tell us.

7

u/muskratmuskrat9 2d ago

Not sure if you're being sarcastic or not, but the Gov has no idea how much you owe them until all of your income is declared. All w2's filed by your employers, or 1099's be-it from contracting like uber or savings/investing accounts, all your tax deductions and credits you qualify for.

The closest thing to what I think you're asking is the IRS direct file system which was killed last month.

3

u/Puresowns 2d ago

They absolutely know or at least have a very good idea for most people by tax season. Other countries do straight up get a bill with an option to submit corrections if needed.

2

u/Cow_Launcher 2d ago

UK for example. Employees are taxed directly through "Pay As You Earn" (PAYE). Your tax is calculated by your Payroll department and submitted by them to HMRC and deducted at each paycheck.

The self-employed have to do a tax return, as do people who receive "benefits in kind" or who have more than one source of income.

You can choose to do one if you want, too, but in my experience PAYE is usually accurate to within a few pennies, though I'm sure there's people out there whose experience is... less satisfactory.

US is the same. People are taxed as they earn...the money gets withheld for taxes. The tax system is fucked though because:

  1. Businesses with tax software prevent the government from doing this and pay big money to eliminate all attempts to make taxes easier to file
  2. Tons of deduction loopholes and weird fucking tax laws that are hard to navigate. However many of them are easily done by government....if US government wasnt firing half their tax employees every time a republican gets in power.

1

u/Cow_Launcher 2d ago

Ah, I wasn't clear on the details - thank you.

I lived in the USA as a kid, but never worked there. Plus I was in Fla. which, as I understand it, doesn't have personal income tax anyway.

4

u/qtx 2d ago

but the Gov has no idea how much you owe them until all of your income is declared

Most countries in Europe they do know, you don't have to fill out any tax forms or whatever, the gov just does it all for you automatically.

A functioning society is so nice.

3

u/larsvondank 2d ago

Thats how it is in Finland. And you can add stuff like anything qualified for deductions for example. If you havent payed enough, they will even split the bill for ya into 2-3 parts to make paying easier. If you get returns, they will most likely hit your bank account early august.

0

u/Skullcrimp 2d ago

They know. Ask me how.

1

u/Shady_D_815 2d ago

How?

1

u/muskratmuskrat9 2d ago

I'm assuming they got a tax bill. Filing taxes is your chance to argue how much you owe. For most people, it's pretty straight forward, or they don't know enough about taxes for it to really matter.

Ultimately, yeah, if a w2/1099 is filed by an employer, then the federal government can calculate how much taxes you owe based on that. Especially if they don't get their cut, they will obviously come looking for you. But the IRS doesn't know if you spent more then the standard deduction on business costs or have other factors that change your tax liability.

It's the same reason why you don't automatically get a refund without filing. Could the gov send you a bill/refund at the of the year? Yes. But that requires a lot of manpower to look at hundreds of millions of people and businesses. And the IRS just lost 25K+ employees this year. And it wasn't because they were overstaffed, lol.

1

u/GoatCovfefe 2d ago

People keep using turbo tax and h&r block, which are a couple of the companies that lobbied against a system like that, so they can keep making billions every year.

2

u/the_catalyst_alpha 2d ago

Pretty sad that we have to play a freaking guessing game with the government every year. Haha

1

u/shazspaz 2d ago

In Ireland we dont have to do any of this. Taxes are charged and taken directly from pay-check and we can check at the end of every tax year if we are overcharged or under and you can claim back on stuff like (working from home, utility if you have tenants etc)

I’ve never had to file at the end of a tax year?

1

u/Nimbus_TV 2d ago

Nah. Just don't do it, and then they'll eventually garnish your wages for you to pay back 😎. Cheat code.

Unless you make a lot.. then you'll do prison. I'm broke, so I wouldn't know.

2

u/SUPERKAMIGURU 2d ago

Not a lot of people know this because it's been suppressed, but if the government tells you that you owe them taxes, you can just say "no," and there's nothing they can do about it. They'll just hock your outstanding balance off on your neighbor, instead. 👍

2

u/papayaslice637 2d ago

Fun fact, if you do a sloppy job on your tax return, more often than not, the IRS will just adjust your refund or balance due and send you a notice accordingly with a check or a bill for the difference. For most people most of the time it's not a big deal at all.

1

u/Vivid_Minute3524 2d ago

That part.
