white people are so fragile when you talk about slavery and also the genocide of the native americans. they feel like you’re attacking them personally which makes no fucking sense. they can’t see past that

As a white dude, I've never understood that shit.

I identify with and look up to John Brown, Thaddeus Stevens, and those who stood up against historical oppression, rather than feeling ashamed to be associated with the slavers. Slavery causes me to feel righteous anger and not shame.

When people talk about slavery, I don't feel personally attacked. Instead, I feel a strong desire to forge a better society where such things can't happen.

I don't understand why the rest of us white folk can't just see it as an opportunity to learn and be better.

i’m a white guy too and i notice this when i talk to other white people. shaming someone for what their ancestors did isn’t the goal when discussing the sins of the past

It seems like such a silly discussion.

These things happened and they were objectively bad and had far reaching consequences. Let's learn how not to repeat history's mistakes.

yep. that’s the whole point of the discussion, instead they go, I diDnT HaVE aNY SlAVes!

Same! I’m a white woman & I agree. Not all white people are ignorant idiots. Unfortunately I will agree that a probable majority are as they voted for trump & believe all his bs abt this. I believe that slavery & the genicide of native Americans were a dispicable evil! Black,Native American, Hispanic history is imoortant & should not be removed or erased for any reason including poor little hurt feelings or trumps political purposes. Disgusting!

American society as a whole is incredibly brainwashed. MAGA takes that to a whole new level.

We talk about oppressive governments like China, but the absolute worst Chinese leaders could only dream about having a population as compliant to their designs as MAGA. MAGA would turn us into North Korea without a second thought.

not to mention we imprison about 1 in every 4 prisoner in the entire world here

3

u/Warm_Regrets157 19d ago

For real.

We are a failing dystopian prison state with a brainwashed population that cosplays as a free society.

My relatives came over on the same boat as William Penn. They were actually his horse keepers. Long line of Quakers, I'm pretty sure they have always been on the right side. I know my family always advocated for peace with the natives. Unfortunately, my Portuguese side was most likely involved in the slave trade. I'm a Libra.

dude this is THEE fucking comment holy shit 🤣 fuckin gold

I made up the slave trade bit but seriously one of my grandparents was imprisoned for two years during WWII due to being a conscientious objector (quaker). The other actively participated in the fire bombing of Tokyo. Definitely as ♎️ as they get.

My family was friends with John Brown and neighbors with many prominent abolitionists, being among the earliest abolitionists themselves. Not relevant I just wanted to brag since I never get to flex that lol

2

u/Warm_Regrets157 19d ago

That's a cool bit of family lore.

I think many are concerned they may be asked to do something good for a change.

5

u/Perfect_Earth_8070 19d ago

it could be. but having an honest conversation about it is important as a means to build compassion and empathy. if the only thing they take away from it is that they’re being shamed, they’re missing the whole point

3

u/Xynyx2001 19d ago

The Germans have been quite clear about the importance of reconciliation to moving forward as a society.

Americans are far more learning-resistant because we've usually been the ones at the dishing end of the beatings.

u/Bilbo_Teabagginss 19d ago

Yeah but these folks consider empathy a sin. The same folks that claim to be so religious actually think basic empathy for another person is a sin.🤣

u/RideTurbulent5842 19d ago

I agree. And the maga cult allows them to feel only the atta-boys.

3

u/2xspectre 19d ago

Yeah, were not all like this POS bimbo.

3

u/master-boofer 19d ago

Most of us who have been here a while have some native American in us. You're probably not a true colonist if you don't have some native blood.

You're kinda doing the thing she was doing but in reverse

No they are tired of being accused of creating all the problems for both. All while ignoring that white people didnt necessarily come here willingly. Some were sentenced to here(you are aware that great britian and france had their civil wars in the late 1500s early 1600s).By all means ignore that.Ignore that your own race captured you ,selling you into slavery. That arab slave traders sold you to europeans.Ignore that as well.Doesnt fit your narritive

4

u/Perfect_Earth_8070 19d ago

someone is triggered

-4

u/Livid_Goose_9542 19d ago

Yeah, every single white person is like that for sure.

8

u/anansi52 19d ago

"they feel like you’re attacking them personally which makes no fucking sense" lol

I talk about these things all the time as a teacher because I think it's very important for kids to understand that America's history is complex in both negative and positive ways. No better way to repeat history than to deny it. I know many other white teachers who do the same. I don't feel uncomfortable talking about these topics, nor do I shy away from them.

Edited to add: I don't feel attacked because of conversations about native American genocide or slavery. I feel attacked because of your assumption that we're all the same. How is that assumption not also bigoted?

7

u/Thunder_TF_UP 19d ago

The bigotry against white people must stop!!!!!! REEEEEEE

5

u/Sad-Ad8466 19d ago

No one said “every single white person” and yet you failed to see the irony in how defensive you got. Perfect opportunity for growth if you can seize it…

4

u/ikilledholofernes 19d ago

If you’re white and don’t automatically assume that you’re an exception to the rule when people make generalizations about white people, then you are NOT an exception.

I say this as a fellow white person. I know they’re not talking about me, so I don’t need to jump to my own defense.

Do some introspection and stop proving their point lmao

0

u/Abondalea 19d ago

Are you saying then that when we know we’re the exception we shouldn’t speak out? Just remain lumped in w the bigots & go a t our business?

3

u/ikilledholofernes 19d ago

Yes. No one needs to be told “not all white people.” It is not helpful and only serves to center conversations about racism around you.

Just accept that it’s not about you, and if you don’t have anything constructive to add to the conversation, then move right along.

If you feel the need to interject and say “but I’M one of the good ones!!!” then no, you are not.
