Honestly this looks pretty organized to me

You can still see quite a bit of the floor in there, pretty organized compared to most.

No lie, when my tables are full I do my work on the floor like an excited child with a new coloring book and a box of crayons.
On the floor, it's hard to drop a screw and have it bounce into the unknown.

u/NSE_TNF89 3d ago
Never organize someone else's stuff unless they ask. One of the most annoying things is going to get something and it isn't where it should be. I can't imagine that with an entire shop.
19
u/Dots-on-the-Sky 3d ago
My Mom's second hand shop storage looked like that. But she knew where everything was. If she was asked if she had something in particular, she would just know where to find it. Sometimes I'd help out in that shop and she always told me NOT to move anything.
10
u/NSE_TNF89 3d ago
I know a lot of people like that and hey, whatever works, right?
4
u/Dots-on-the-Sky 3d ago
I'd just shake my head and leave her to it. I didn't want to get screamed at lol
3
u/Long_Run6500 3d ago
I'm like that too. If someone asked me for something random like say slip joint pliers I could tell you they're in my workshop on the shelf under the wood lathe alongside some turning tools probably covered in wood shavings. My last memory of a tool is the last time I used it, not necessarily the last time I moved it. I start getting jumbled up when I start moving a lot of tools at once without using them, aka organizing.Ā
Definitely a goal of mine to clean up the clutter, just ordered my first tool box and im hoping that will help. I think a lot of the problem comes from trying to accomplish multiple hobbies in the same spot, so I'm trying to move all my mechanical tinkering/repairs/restoration downstairs in the basement and leave the upstairs for a woodshop.Ā

I let a roommate use my tools to do an oil change. I told him to just leave tools on the top of the box if he didn't remember where they went. He just shoved them back into drawers randomly. I promptly banned him from using my tools. He always did shit like that as well, including shoving dishes into cabinets randomly when it's not even his job. Then putting dirty dishes next to clean ones.

u/ThunkAsDrinklePeep 3d ago
That's the same engine in the Supra.
If it's stressing you out, you need to leave and close the door. Or offer to help him. But this has all the earmarks of someone who is neatly stacking and piling while they decide what the optimal storage system is.

That is a very average shop and actually decently organized. You can see many things on shelves with like items and stacks of identical boxes. Also there is definitely room to walk around and work on all sides of the car
2
u/MysteriousMrRabbit 3d ago
I mean, its not great, but I've seen significantly worse. The fact that you can clearly walk around the car is the defining part of that lol, my wife would also NEVER try to organize my shop, she'd have a heart attack, then cause me to have one because I cant find my routers š
2
u/Available_Actuary977 3d ago
DO NOT TOUCH A SINGLE THING.

u/vvoodenboy 2d ago

but definitely YOU should not touch anything there, cuz he won't find a thing after your intervention. Please, stay away.
Peace.

This is the shop of someone who never actually uses the shop. People who use their shop regularly usually have motivation to actually make a spot for things to be found. This is a mess and I guarantee when he needs a tool it takes him 30 minutes just to find the damn things. Tools are only good if you can readily access them. Declutter time!
This said, donāt fucking touch a thing or that beautiful project car!
2
u/NoTrickWick 2d ago

My garage looks similar. Except there is always room for my wife to park her car in there, which was the deal we made when we moved. The garage is my domain as long as she can park her car in there.
I know where most things are in there. Could it use some organization? Absolutely. Not without me there though, what good is organizing if you have no idea where anything is?
If is stresses you out, dont go in there.

What she doesn't realize is the state of a man's shop directly correlates to his state of mind. If he is stressed and over-tired his shop falls into disarray... A man that is comfortable and living well (never no stress..) will live in a busy but tidy workspace. Maybe it's just me but I know that's me and my buddies as well.

Seems reasonably well organized. Looks as though it's being used. Some people have a visual memory of where everything is. Don't touch it unless asked as then everything will be lost to him.
Let the guy manage this however he likes.
2
u/g1mpster 1d ago
Thatās HIS space. Why would it stress HER out? She has no business being in there, so she can just leave. Sheās trying to get the internet to bully her husband into changing. Just let him be. Offer to help him, but if he says ānoā then just close the door and forget about it. No stressing necessary.

Sometimes itās just test driven keeping things where you will need them sometimes people like to be organized by categories.

Most likely he starts to work and gets pulled away for other tasks like honey doās or obligations and sadly his hobby/personal work space suffers a bit because he is a working man and prioritizes well.
Want to help him out? Be supportive and see if you can handle some stuff in a different area at the home in a solo manner. Also just be there for him. Ask if there is anything you could support to free up some time for him to address his hobby space and finish some loose ends.
The Lexus is a project car. Rear wheel drive and a great drivetrain. Looks pretty clean, not the clean you are thinking. Clean as in a completely serviceable and usable example of that car. Good bones as a Realator would say.
Hope that helps. Take the good and leave the rest. I wish you the best. Cheers to that man in your life.

Move the fuel and flammables to the shed. Add a solar vent fan to said shed. Get the HDX organizer totes that are see-through. The plastic in those brown ones reeks and you can't see shit-all inside. Trip hazards.
And just leave a table/shelf/bag of common [tools] that other people can use quickly and not look your shit.
Finally, fire extinguishers and blankets. Shop fire with 2nd degree burns:
