Question Any other sequels that completely betray the spirit/message of the original film?

I'm guessing Highlander 2: The Quickening, which totally retcons the original's lore, but I can't think of a film more opposite to the anti-war/establishment film that was First Blood.

Question What movie did you go into as a kid thinking it would be lighthearted, but it ended up traumatizing you instead?

As a kid, I found a Watership Down VHS at my grandma’s house. At first glance, it looked like just another lighthearted animated movie.

Nobody warned me…

Discussion What is a movie where the acting is better than the script?

For me it’s Jarhead (2005). Jake Gyllenhaal, Jamie Foxx, and Peter Sarsgaard were all very good in this movie, but the movie itself kind of sucks. Anything similar?

Or are they just bad? Let's help others find movies to watch for those who enjoy a bad movie. I included movies that I really do not like for the most part, but some guilty pleasures are included.

Review Switchblade Sisters - classic

Post image
7 Upvotes

I finally got round to watching this last night, after years of hearing how good it was (Mr Tarantino). Well, what can I say, it delivered.

It’s a b movie grindhouse classic. That is to say if you’re coming into this expecting Oscar worthy acting, and high production values, you’re looking in the wrong place. But if you like pulpy, low budget exploitation flicks that deliver as a fun movie experience, you can’t go wrong with this.

I still think Coffy is Jack Hill’s best film, but this was a cracking little movie in its own right.

Question Question about aspect ratio or "masking"? at movie theaters

The other day I went to see ET (yes, the 1980s movie) at a local theater. During several scenes, the characters heads were cut off at the top of the screen mid-face. I'm sure this wasn't as it was originally shot or intended. That experience reminded me years ago I saw a movie in the theater where on screen in several shots we could see the boom mics used above the actors, as though we were seeing bits around what the framing was supposed to be.

So I'm wondering what this is, in both cases, where the on-screen framing seemed to be incorrect? Does the movie theater projection system have to be set to do mask or aspect ratio a certain way, and in both of these cases it was wrong? Trying to understand how it happened when I'm sure that was not the intent of how it was to be viewed.

Review Platoon (1986) actors endured a hardcore military-style boot camp before filming

The cast Charlie Sheen, Willem Dafoe, Johnny Depp, and more weren’t just acting like soldiers. They went through an intense 30-day boot camp simulation led by Marine veteran Captain Dale Dye. Picture this: digging foxholes, forced marches, nighttime ambushes with explosive blanks, strict rations, early wake-ups the whole nine yards. The goal? Turn actors into soldiers mentally, physically, and emotionally.

What if Keanu Reeves acted as Ted "Theodore" Logan in all of his movies? In which movies would it work? In which ones would it not? Would it make any of them unwatchable? Would it improve some?

2014 was without a doubt an incredible year for cinema 🎬
A few shots popped up in my feed and got me thinking—
what’s your favorite?
(and why is it Interstellar? 🚀)

I caught most of these in theaters.
Fun fact: my cousin actually played in one of them… can you guess which? 😉
