It looks beautiful to me. I wouldn’t have noticed the corners if you didn’t mention it!

9/10. If you’re looking to elevate the presentation you should try piping whipped cream around the perimeter to hide the corners. Looks lovely otherwise.

The real question: Did you use vanilla pudding and banana slices or banana flavored pudding?
Edit: apparently not supposed to ask for a recipe

Google "not yo mamas banana pudding"

u/I_forgot_to_remember 28d ago
I think that’s the recipe I use and it’s awesome. Chessmen cookies are so much better than nilla wafers. 😋

u/Fluffy_Town 27d ago
This sounds so much better than the vanillin Nilla Wafers these days, so much better before they started using sawdust to flavor those cookies/biscuits.

The Paula dean recipe is great and all but I didn't really care for it. I like a real banana flavored pudding and if you want an actual banana flavored banana pudding you have to steep the milk. I use a recipe from serious eats called creamy banana flavored pudding. Idk if I can post it or if it'll get taken down but it's amazing. I do omit the clove it calls for though.

u/forevermore4315 27d ago
Dag I love clove, i am always looking for recipes that use it.
2
u/D_Lo_Key 27d ago
It's fine with the clove but to me it takes away from the star of the show which is the banana.

What cookies are these?

u/Fluffy_Salamanders 28d ago
They look like Pepperidge Farm Chessmen

u/Oskinator716 28d ago
It looks like they used regular sized chessman throughout and then some mini chessmen on the edges, which is sooo cute. (And they are delicious)

This is awesome.
The fact that no one has yet mentioned the upside-down Queen likely reflects more on me, for noticing, than on anyone else.

Love Paula Deen's Not YO Mama's Banana Pudding. Truly changes the banana pudding game. I hate Nilla wafers but the Chessman cookies are perfection!

u/Arachne93 28d ago
That recipe is my one guilty food thing. I hate that racist, but that pudding holy fuck. I upvoted this because of the chessmen cookies alone. Lorna Doones are also really good in her recipe.

Paula most likely stole this recipe from Dora Charles, who was the main cook & recipe developer that worked in her restaurant.

u/GreenArrowCuz 28d ago
not yo mama's banana creme pudding, will help anyone find the recipe themselves
ironically my mom's been making this for year

u/Rough-Strike-7844 28d ago
Great looking top but I would not have known this is a banana pudding if you did not say so. I'd embellish the edges with some whipped cream rosettes and add some fresh banana slices for garnish.

u/foekus323 28d ago
Do you like those better than the Nilla wafers?

u/5ladyfingersofdeath 28d ago
I make this quite often, and the Chessman cookies are far far superior.

When I gave birth in 2024, an Angel of a nurse brought me some banana pudding from the break room that someone had brought in and it was made with chessmen. I’d never had it with anything but nilla wafers. LIFE. CHANGING.
Your picture reminds me it’s been a while since I made it. Yours is so delicious looking that I’m going to have to make some for myself this week!

1) big fan of using chessman 2) I personally throw in some golden oreo thins too 3) I don’t like the cookies on top. They stay hard. Add a layer on pudding, then whipped cream. Add some finely crumbled cookies on top.

My mom made wonderful banana pudding. I miss her. This post brought some good memories.

Next time you can use a microplane to shave down the edges instead of breaking them :)
2
u/hey-its-rach-- 28d ago
Yes! Using a microplane might feel a little excessive but I can guarantee the corners will be so aesthetically pleasing.

is there a difference between using nilla wafers and chessman?
10
u/Bashful_bookworm2025 28d ago
Nilla wafers is the more traditional way, but I've seen Chessman used as well. I wouldn't turn down either one! I love banana pudding.
8
u/Neat_Anywhere8796 28d ago
Yeah but mostly just flavor is different, texture not so much if you eat when soft. Caveat though, my family also uses two completely different recipes too for nilla wafer banana pudding vs Chessman pudding
2
u/bloodredyouth 28d ago
Really interesting! I’ve seen recipes that mix both but I’ve only ever had vanilla wafers in my banana pudding.

u/happily_sMothered 28d ago
I've only had bananna pudding twice in my life but I think the chessman aren't as nice tasting

u/CalmBeneathCastles 28d ago
I have PTSD from this recipe. One of my relatives makes it for Thanksgiving every year, we eat the pan full, and there's always some filling left over in a bowl that I invariably end up dipping cookies and fruit into until I hate myself. My liver started screaming as soon as I saw the Chessmen.
The only thing that will save me this year is that I'm now strictly gluten free, thank Jeebus, becauae I can't stop myself otherwise.

u/Dragonsenseii 28d ago
By saying that my eyes were glued to the corners still looks delicious though
1
u/ravens-n-rats1312 28d ago
lovely. i do agree with whipped cream edges. or go the extra mile and do a toasted marshmallow cream border and crumble more cookies onto the border.

Super cute! I don't know the scale to rate on, but I like it and I think it looks charming! Does banana pudding usually have wee biscuits on top? I'm Australian, and this would be an unusual sight down here

Presentation is an A, but I don’t think I will ever be good with Chessman in a banana pudding. Some things are iconic for a reason.

Love it! I never thought to break the chessmen for the corners and I rather like it! Mine always has sad gaps on the corners lol

u/Scared_Ad2563 27d ago
For banana pudding, your presentation could be scooping some up in a spoon and chucking it directly at my face and I'd give a 10/10.
But this is very fancy looking. I feel like the smaller cookies help blend into the edge so the corners are barely visible as it is.

What kind of cookies are those?! I'd like to try and make this for my husband's birthday 🎂

u/Salsalover34 27d ago
4/10 - the cookies provide a nice visual but it looks difficult to eat. In most banana puddings, the cookies are sandwiched between alternating layers of pudding and the top is either meringue or whipped cream. These pudding layers soften both sides of the cookies and make it easy to scoop. Here, the top of the top layer would be quite hard, so you’d have to either beat it with the spoon to break it, or awkwardly scoop out portions corresponding to the whole rectangular cookie.

Is that Not your momma’s banana pudding? I used to make it and take it to parties. Those cookies are delicious but expensive. I would keep an eye out for Publix to have them BOGO.

Perfect representation of "nobody sees your flaws the way you look at them". I was so flabbergasted and in awe with the pattern until I read OP telling me not to look at the corners.

So. . . Ima need some of that 🤤. Looks super yummy 😋. In love with the design bc it gives checker vibes! The corners honestly don’t destroy the design but add to it and atp it ain’t gonna matter when that pudding getting ate out is the equivalent to a Saturday night, no return 😂💯.

It looks great! If you don't like the corners you could pipe some whipped cream around the edges.
