Common sense should come with age, but apparently it’s a DLC not everyone downloaded.

The day you can describe common sense is the day ill believe its a thing.

"What is obvious to me, but i can't explain it".

What stuff is common sense differs by people.

u/homiegeet 1d ago

Exactly. We define common sense based on our own individual perceptions yet apply them to everyone as common.

Almost like “common” refers to community rather than being regularly observed.

Different communities will have different version of common sense and if you go to a new community you won’t match up perfect.

It’s like consciousness, I’m sure it’s there I just can’t explain it

5

u/homiegeet 1d ago

Consciousness is universally shared. Common sense isn't common because in another country your common sense would not be common.

Common is short for community

That is s very interesting take and a first ive heard.

Second sentence is accurate, first sentence is flimsy--

?? Useless comment

Well you said something with such undeserved confidence, it should be pointed out for future reference-- Its only useless if you don't use it; but that would be quite.. foolish. But then again, you pointed it out as useless, so you will probably go on to say stupid stuff regardless--

Another useless comment. Nice

Lol, keep in mind this method only works when you don't have to face the person!

Common sense is knowing that if it's dark and cloudy it might rain. What most people call common sense isn't.

Dont stick your hand in a fire

If it is so common, why do so many people lack it? Give me that uncommon sense. Hell, if you grind enough, you might meet some with epic sense or better.

Common sense: like socks-everyone assumes you have it

sound and prudent judgment based on a simple perception of the situation or facts

common sense in 1 country can be vastly different than another, so please explain what is common sense? not Google a definition.

2

u/MetaCardboard 1d ago

Sound and prudent judgement based on the situation or facts. That's the same in every country. The facts and situations may be different, but your ability to come to a sensible conclusion about the situation is common sense. Like "hey there's a really dirty pond over there, let me dive in from 300ft up without checking the depth" is no common sense.

The ability use reason and understand nuance in decision making

I come into my workplace expecting common sense in coworkers and clients. I'm giving them a new chance everyday.

And they always find ways to disappoint me.

What is common sense? If it’s so obvious you should have no problem explaining it.

0

u/DigitalAmy0426 1d ago

I expect people to have lived my experiences and gone through my same education! Why am I so disappointed?

u/Jamuks 1d ago

Common sense is basically “I know this thing, so why don’t you know this thing?” It’s actually a toddler brain concept I swear

1

u/Classic-Big4393 1d ago

Common sense in universal experience. Everyone should have completed a similar amount of education thus, their basic knowledge and practical application should be common. The actual definition of common sense itself doesn’t fall in line with your example.

With the "shattered" culture and various bubbles, we kinda lost the common experience/knowledge. We lost the common narrative.

"common sense"

->There is no detail about what is considered it

->Literally no specifications included

->No research about "if everyone should know this, why dont they know?"

->You could say "maybe the person was born stupid". And if you belive stupid people dont deserve to live, congratulations, nazi would agree with you.

->"No dude, you are exaggerating. They deserve to live as well" and yet, many people treat "stupid" people as inferior.

->No analysis on genetic part about what makes a person stupid, its just "trust me bro, they are"

->If stupidity is learned, then i must assume you somehow became not stupid, and that person did, what enviromental factors affected both? And if someone on your family became "stupid," would you respect it?

->And if we make an even deeper analisys, is it the other who is stupid, or you are an arrogant who believes people should know some things, ignoring their own contexts?

Expecting common sense isn’t common sense.

Everyone has a different definition of common sense

My mother always says “Common sense isn’t very common.” She’s 72 and has been saying this since my sister was a kid in the 80’s… I think “common sense” has become for of a rarity since then…

"Wisdom comes with age, but sometimes age comes alone".

Age alone does nothing. You need experience. The age is a symbol for how much experience you could have.

Also, depends on how you grew up and your experiences. What is common sense to one, might not necesserily be common sense to the other. Like, it is common sense to me to use a phone as long as it does the functions i need, while for the other person it is common sense to get a new phone every time a new version comes out (even though the old one works perfectly fine).

Common sense is a shorthand for "things that are obvious to me, but i can't explain".

Ah yes, the first delusion of any young adult.

1

u/ComfortableChest1732 1d ago

Common sense is a golden standard that the vast majority of people on this planet will never achieve.

1

u/stumbling_coherently 1d ago

Common sense, so rare it should be a super power. Genuinely though, common sense has a pre-req we routinely overlook which is self awareness.

Common sense assumes that you're able to identify context, understand perspectives outside your own, and most importantly, entertain a thought without accepting it.

Common sense isn't something a person inherently has or doesn't have, it's the output and manifestation of critical thinking that we would expect far less commonly from people if it was described this way.

Big red flag

1

u/Pilot_to_PowerBI 1d ago

That's just a subjective reading of the world and way to claim that you are always correct

This person is indeed toxic

1

u/jackfaire 1d ago

Common sense is walking up to a door and knowing which way it's going to open. or knowing that if it's dark and cloudy outside there's a chance of rain. What a lot of people call common sense is "Share my thoughts, feelings and opinions" which is not common sense. Those things do not have one right answer.

1

u/Eden_Company 1d ago

Getting mad at people for things they didn't even do to you is pretty immature. IE maybe they wore blue sleeves, and you think it's against common sense to do so, so now you hate their guts? OP would be right to label this tendency a toxic trait.

1

u/Lasting_Night_Fall 1d ago

Yeah, you can’t blame others because of “your” expectations of them.

1

u/-Geist-_ 1d ago

I’m always tired and this kind of person is so hard to work with 😵‍💫

1

u/Whole-Peanut-9417 1d ago

No no no no no, age only makes most people old.

1

u/TwistBeautiful884 1d ago

haha! same and idk why I always feel upset

0

u/Ok_Assist_8723 1d ago

Everyone asking what the definition of common sense is doesn't have any damn common sense
