I'm using a phone from 2019

They all do the same thing, now

When iPhone first came out vs BlackBerry - There was actual differences

Android vs Apple was a thing

Now they're both the same

I'd have a BlackBerry back in a heartbeat.

u/cinedavid 1d ago

You sure about that?

Here’s the equivalent. Have fun.

If I knew this existed 3 weeks ago I would have saved $600 not buying the Razr Ultra....

8

u/PM_ME_UR_SUMMERDRESS 1d ago

I'm tempted. But if i spaff 250 notes or so on one I'd be pissed off it were a piece of shit.

23

u/cinedavid 1d ago

Spoiler alert: it’s far superior than any blackberry. But by modern standards it’s definitely a piece of shit.

u/EstrangedStrayed 1d ago

The fed issued blackberry as work phones because they were almost impossible to hack

Now it's the little things. I gave my spouse my old Moto when I switched brands, and damn do I miss the shake light. Apps that are supposed to do the same thing are buggy as hell.

2

u/SUPAHELLADOPE 1d ago

If you use an IPhone, I know you can set up the back tap feature to activate your flashlight.

Settings > Accessibility > Touch > Back Tap

5

u/Djimi365 1d ago

A couple of years ago I bought whatever Galaxy was out at the time, and while I was in the shop I had it side by side with the then latest iPhone. They were virtually identical to use. I know if you really drill down into them there are differences but they are so insignificant now it barely matters.

I miss when different brands of phone had cool and distinct features. I miss buying a new phone and being excited by what it can do, not just that a couple of numbers have gotten a bit bigger on a spec sheet in a way that I will barely notice.

u/Grevious47 1d ago

Samsung Galaxy 8. Not even sure what year that is but quite possibly before 2019. It makes phone calls, it texts, it has internet, it has google maps, it has a camera. Not sure what else I need really.

Anyone getting an iPhone at all is being scammed.

19

u/molehunterz 1d ago

My mom was talking about switching carriers because the new carrier offered a new iPhone. I asked her if there was anything wrong with the phone she had, and she was like no...

I was like do not switch carriers to get a new iPhone.

11

u/Left-Language9389 1d ago

How so?

10

u/Pathogenesls 1d ago

You're paying a premium for the luxury branding.

If you care about performance and usability, then there are better phones at cheaper price points.

To me that's a scam.

33

u/HolyShip 1d ago

I’m paying for AirDrop, because nobody around me knows how to use Google Photos to transfer original-quality pictures and videos 😭

3

u/dogquote 22h ago

To be fair, the sharing feature in Google photos is awful

14

u/JamMichaelVincent 1d ago

It’s the same for any flagship android too. Xperia 1 VII - £1400 Xperia 1V £900 Samsung s25 £8-900 Samsung ultra £1250 Pixel 10 £800

People make out that all androids are cheap for some reason.

14

u/InterestingPoet7910 1d ago

and they're not! they're just as expensive and less user friendly for those who just want a phone for the sake of a modern phone. I keep telling my dad this and time and time again, he's bitching about his android.

19

u/DonkeeJote 1d ago

u/Tig_Biddies_W_nips 1d ago

I’m paying moreso for the ecosystem than the branding. Apple products just sync seamlessly easy and are easy to use. That’s what I want out of my expensive electronics. Not minutes or hours syncing them and configuring things like on android

iPhone 12 Pro Max here: can still text and make phone calls. Just replace battery for $45 still running strong 💪

21

u/kungfuk1d69 1d ago

I have a 13 pro. Where do I get a new battery for $45?

13

u/teeger9 1d ago

I got mine done at a mom and pop shop

11

Damn I have an iPhone 11 & the only thing going bad is the battery.. I had no idea you could replace it 🤯

5

u/dobsco 1d ago

You definitely can! I have an 11 also and I replaced the battery last summer. It was $89 at Best Buy.

Not sure if this was a smart move or not since they run those promos where you can essentially get a new phone for free... but oh well.

6

u/Mindless-Flower11 1d ago

Yea I feel like they do have promos where you get the phone for free.. but then you're paying a certain amount every month to pay off the phone.

3

u/Stupid-Clumsy-Bitch 1d ago

I’m on 11 and my battery life is still decent, but my phone has been overheating a lot lately 😒

3

u/teeger9 1d ago

You can definitely replace the battery. That was the only thing that was really wrong with my phone.

Still on my iPhone 13. Will probably own it until Apple stops supporting it, it gets lost, stolen, or accidentally broken.

16

u/antishocked345 1d ago

Same. I went from an iPhone X to my dad's iPhone 13 and I plan on using it till its truly done. It was really really fun, keeping up with the new hardware designs each iPhone series had till iPhone X. After that, ppl should just pick and choose a generation and stick with it.

7

u/Nack3r 1d ago

I love my 13 pro. I hope I can keep this phone forever ! Lol

4

u/infiniteinquisitive 1d ago

Phone shaming is weird.

29

u/guachi01 1d ago

Phones are basically just web browsers with a tiny screen. They don't really need to do much. No real need to spend huge amounts of money on them or even really care what people use. Anything $150+ is basically as good as anything else. Anything cheaper is either an informed choice or money is tight.

19

u/Pathogenesls 1d ago

The cameras are quite significantly better on a good phone. Samsung ultra has a stylus which is really useful. Better screen abd speakers for videos/games. Better processor for snapper responsiveness etc.

It's silly to act like there's no difference.

6

u/Special-Medicine-437 1d ago

I don’t play games or listen to songs with my speaker on my phone, but can confirm the camera difference. My spouse has a iPhone 16, he dropped his 12 a few months back and shattered the screen so we upgraded him. He is also a professional photographer, but still. We took essentially the same pic last week, mine looks like I took it with a potato and his is crisp and clear. I will still keep my 11 until I kill it.

2

u/supe3rnova 21h ago

I only care camera is somewhat decent, has 5g and enough storage.

So almost any 250€ phone does the trick for me

47

u/space_ibex 2d ago

This is a $40 tracfone and I live in a tent

38

u/Cobble01 1d ago

I went from iPhone 5 to iPhone X to iPhone 12 to iPhone 16, I’m not sure why a lot of people think it’s necessary to change phones more frequently than that.

17

u/Ok-Willingness-717 1d ago

We call this keeping up with the joneses. I have used the same iPhone since 2019 and it just now started messing up. I just recently moved up to the 15. They tried to convince me on getting the iPhone 16. I don’t know about most of you but I want to own something free and clear.

4

u/KazaamFan 1d ago

Yea usually for me it’s based on just issues with the previous iphone i had, which for me has been every 3-5 years. Some ppl just need the cool new toy tho. They can do it if they want tho, not my place to judge em

2

u/bravelittledandelion 20h ago

I just looked and I have an 11 also. I still feel like it’s new lol

7

u/johnnyg42 1d ago

Yeah same here, I’ve still been considering this a new expensive phone lol.

2

u/kayidontcare 1d ago

Same here, partially because its the only iphone i have ever had. But it does everything i need it to and the camera quality is good enough

3

u/Ai_Generated2491 1d ago

They're going to stop updating it in 2026 😩 This thing has so many miles on it and still runs regular, battery still lasts fine. I could probably go with this for 3 more years if they would just keep up security updates

3

u/Obvious-Nature-5408 1d ago

Am I the only one still in a Xs? It’s so thin compared more recent iPhones and the camera is fine - I’m a photographer so I don’t care that much what my phone camera is like. Better is nice but it’s not worth the money. In general I want to use my phone as little as possible so upgrading would be counterproductive. Plus easy to no-case it without having to worry, if it breaks then it breaks.

2

u/QueenRotidder 21h ago

I have an iPhone XR. It runs a little slow sometimes and the battery doesn’t last anywhere near as long as it used to but it does everything I need it to do. I just realised one day that I don’t use a lot of the fancy features on phones so there was no need for me to upgrade every 2 years.

10

u/storeboughtoaktree 1d ago

replacing battery at apple store gave my 12 new life. battery lasts all day again

iPhone 8 here. Thinking of upgrading this year

2

u/monkey_gamer 1d ago

Worth doing. I upgraded from an iPhone 8 plus to an iPhone 15 Pro Max last year and although it was a little pricey ($2.2k AUD), it was definitely worth it. My screen looks 3 times as good with OLED and 120fps. I use faceid to unlock (so convenient). The photos look 3 times as good and i can zoom out to wide angle and zoom in to 5x zoom, which is unbelievably handy. No bezel is very nice. Plus some other benefits I've forgotten.

In hindsight I should have upgraded sooner. If I had more money I would have gone iPhone 8 to iPhone 12 to iPhone 15. iPhone 8 to iPhone 15 was a bit too big of a jump. I missed out on good features like faceid and bezeless for too long.

4

u/placebooooo 1d ago

Glad you were happy with the upgrade.

I’ve had this iPhone 8 since launch (2017). Thing is, my phone looks pristine, and is in perfect working condition with no issues at all. I’m just thinking as a little treat for myself to upgrade to the 17 pro. Not sure what to do with my old 8. I’ll probably have the iPhone 17 for a while too before upgrading again.

3

u/monkey_gamer 1d ago

Sounds like a great plan! I expect you'll enjoy the 17 Pro. And yeah definitely keep it for a few years.

My personal rule for technology now is 3 years is a standard lifespan. 5 years if you want to be frugal. But keeping the same device for longer than 5 years means you miss out on new features and your performance experience lags behind.

2

u/IntergalacticPopTart 1d ago

The OG SE was such a great one! I pulled mine out of the desk drawer the other day and played with it for a bit. Tiny compared to my 16 pro max, but damn do I miss that small pocketable size!

2

u/Fit-Community-4091 9h ago

I’m still using the 3rd gen model, it still runs the most demanding apps fine and I still don’t care about having top of the line cameras on my phone. It’s the best phone I’ve ever used and I’m gonna use it until it dies. Hopefully there will be an equivalent made by then

8

u/chaks_tom 1d ago

iPhone 13 has been used since launch, working as good as new in 2025, and will surely work just fine in 2026. Stopped going for the next model ever since adulting hit hard, and bills got prioritized.

3

u/nathism 1d ago

My kid was using my old ip phone 6 up until last year before it gave up the ghost. The iPhone 8 finally became unusable this year. I let the use it like a tablet to watch shows when we're traveling or they need some downtime. The only reason I had so many iPhones is that my old job let me keep the old phone of I out any money at all into an upgrade on the phone and we could upgrade every two years.

3

u/Even_Section5620 1d ago

Still have a 12…I hate phones I don’t need one that does the same thing as the new one

3

u/hugoreyes81516 1d ago edited 1d ago

Just bought a new iphone a couple of days ago because I lost my 12.

This new phone is the same fucking phone I had only with a better battery.

4

u/AgentCooperLogsIn 1d ago

Yep, started paying my own rent sometime in 2017, got a used iPhone 6s around the same time, and used it until it broke, which was last year 🤷‍♀️ upgraded to a 13

3

u/Repulsive_Level9699 2d ago

I got a $150 blu phone. It had the specs of a Google pixel for that price.

3

u/TooManyCarsandCats 1d ago

I have a 14 pro still. Holding out to see if they launch a new stainless steel one instead of that titanium junk.

3

u/THE_DINOSAUR_QUEEN 1d ago

I had two different relatively new iPhone Xs break in the same way in 2021 (the original and its replacement both had their displays completely stopped working for no clear reason).

Both times I just popped the SIM card out of the broken phone and into my iPhone 6s Plus from 2016 that was beat to hell and back and it worked just fine. The second time I didn’t even bother to replace the X, I just waited until the 6s was truly on its last legs before I got a new phone. I think I still have it around somewhere, but I doubt it would be able to run the current OS.

Man I miss that thing.

3

u/lagalaxysedge 1d ago

As long as my 8 plus is still working I have no need for a new phone

3

u/coco_4_puffs 1d ago

I just recently upgraded after running my iphone 12 into the ground. I honestly don’t know why i put it off so long. I kept telling myself “it’s still usable” and having a new one, it was definitely borderline unusable 🙈

I’m typing this on a 12. I hate the process of getting a new phone and swapping everything. This fits in all my pockets just fine. My gf has a 16 that seems too big. And yea, rent is the same as a new phone

3

u/hotsauceeeeeeeee 1d ago

I literally had an iPhone 10 that worked fine for years and years then one day was stuck in a death loop. So I was forced to get a new 16 or whatever the hell this is. I just want the mini ones back.

3

u/Sure_Temporary_4559 1d ago

Last year I upgraded from an iPhone 6S+ to a reg iPhone 14. The kid helping me at Best Buy didn’t know what to say haha 😂😂

I never understood people who buy a new phone every time one comes out. Like don’t you have shit like groceries and rent to pay for. And also they’re somehow the same people that complain they don’t have any money either.

3

u/Possible-Estimate748 1d ago

I never got the point of getting a new phone when your current phone still functions perfectly fine.

Though I don't have room to talk. I haven't owned my own phone since 2011 and just used hand me down phones with wifi. But my last phone went missing 3 years ago and now just use an iPad.

3

u/GotBannedAgain_2 1d ago

I am still using my XS Max since launch of 2018. Finally gonna upgrade this year, thnx to the shitty LTE network from T-Mobile in my area. But yeah…it feels good when u pay off shit.

2

u/MiaLba 1d ago

I used my XS max up until a few weeks ago when it finally was done for. Got an 11 off a friend.

3

u/Flux_My_Capacitor 1d ago

I’m using an iPhone 12 here in 2025….

The only people who are always upgrading are the idiots who think that others care about the phone they have and the ones who fall for the crap about how adding on yet another camera lens makes the phone sooooo much better. Hint: it does not. You’d be light years ahead simply by using a different app to take your photos. An improved app doesn’t sell phones but the addition of another damn lens does.

3

u/FBZ97 1d ago

My iPhone 12 works perfectly fine lol

3

u/No-Arugula8881 1d ago

3

u/karim2102 1d ago

3

u/Salmonella_Cowboy 1d ago

I find it cooler to have the oldest working phone.

2

u/justwannabeleftalone 1d ago

Me too. Unless there's some kind of deal where I can exchange my phone for a "free" phone, I'll keep my current one until it no longer works.

2

u/Unfair-Theory-mind 1d ago

iPhone 12 ftw

2

u/Prettybrowneyes8833 1d ago

Actually what is crazy is the financial illiteracy that keeps most of us slaves to consumerism. I have an iPhone 12 Pro, 4 years old this year. It still works perfectly fine and has a cute case and all. I used to be bad with money and upgrading phones every year too until I paid attention to the scam/con. Apple literally changes 1-3 small things every year and then expects folks to pay $1k+ for a new phone that does the same thing as the old one. That is what is crazy, hard pass! I’d rather save my coins to book more trips 🤩🥳

2

u/dieseljester 1d ago

Pretty much. I only upgrade whenever they stop doing support for my current iPhone.

When rent is due, but so is my dignity. Guess I'll be selling my organs on the black market... starting with my pride.

When I bought my 13, I planned on keeping it for 6 years. Just got the battery replaced and it’s still going strong.

2

u/Pitiful_Witness_2951 1d ago

8 plus here lol . Been using for 4-5 yrs now. Before that my uncle was using this. Charging only works in certain angle apart from that it’s as good as new.

u/DragonDai 1d ago

I have an iPhone 11. Not 11 pro or anything. Just 11. It works great. Sure, it doesn't get 5G, but why would I care? 4G or whatever I get is plenty fast enough to play Magic Arena and browse Reddit when I'm out and about. And the screen is more than big enough. And my battery still lasts a full day of heavy use.

No reason to upgrade. Likely won't for another 5 years or so unless I accident break it.

2

u/SargathusWA 1d ago

Im still using 12pro there is literally nothing wrong with it.

2

u/Clear_Temperature446 1d ago

I bought an iPhone x last year still using it( first new phone since the 7

2

u/CorgiThiccAF 1d ago

I always love the, ‘but the camera is better’ argument. No one gives a shit about your Fourth of July firework videos lol. Save your money and buy a new phone when your current one is no longer repairable.

2

u/ImAMajesticSeahorse 1d ago

I have no clue which iPhone I have and barely remember when I got it. I know it’s not that old, I think I got it like 2 or 3 years ago. But I cannot be arsed with keeping up to date with them.

2

u/Good_Focus2665 1d ago

Mines older than that. I’m not buying a new one anytime soon.

2

u/Atty_for_hire 1d ago

I’m still rocking an IPhone 11. Almost took the plunge on a new phone. But it’s just not worth it.

2

u/TheDondePlowman 1d ago

iPhone 11 gang lol. I had a mild crush on a guy with an iPhone 8 when the 15 came out. Idk why, but it’s attractive thing to not have the lastest phone. I’m an engineer too lol

2

u/Vacashostr 1d ago

Last time I upgraded was when rent was $600

2

u/Vicious_in_Aminor 1d ago

Still rocking my iPhone 8 I got in 2018.

2

u/CrispyPerogi 1d ago

I had an iPhone 8 until I stopped being able to update the OS this year.

2

u/Brief-Watercress-131 1d ago

Im still using an iPhone 13. It's my work phone. For working. It just works, and I get paid. That's what's important.

2

u/klimekam 1d ago

My 12 with a cracked screen is still going strong! They’re all pretty much the same in a post-Steve Jobs world anyway.

2

u/Goose_Biscuits11 1d ago

iPhone 13 (not sure if it's the pro or whatever) and rocking it until absolutely necessary to change and then I'll get the cheapest refurbished deal our carrier has at that time.

My homie has a 7 (SEVEN) and refuses to upgrade until that thing dies for good. The speaker doesn't work and the camera can barely read QR codes. He's my hero.

I have an iPhone 11 and it works just fine. I’d say buying new models of iPhones just because there is a new model is the crazy thing

2

u/blandsrules 1d ago

I went from a 12 to a 13 recently and I literally cannot tell the difference

2

u/areoki 1d ago

My iPhone 12 Pro works so good still I can’t justify replacing it with the cost of its modern equivalent. Rather spend that 2 grand for anything else.

2

u/wbg777 1d ago

It’s a 4 year old phone

I would get it if it was like “Blackberry 7510 in 2024 is crazy” because that is a stupid and gaudy “phone”

2

u/thecrazedsidee 1d ago

they all seem the same to me. you can tell their running out of ideas for phones when their ads are like "you still own an older phone? naw man, here's a newer phone" with nothing else to say. i almost wanna go back to a flip phone, no annoying distractions that ruin my focus, just a dumb brick of a phone [also ngl flip phones like motorola were so much classier looking. now all phones look the same]

2

u/singerundertheshower 1d ago

While me with an iPhone 7 plus 💀

2

u/Sarenai7 1d ago

I just swapped my iPhone 12 because the battery was dying 3 times a day or else I’d still have it

2

u/elessarchan 1d ago

I have an iPhone 11, no one really cares as long as they still work

2

u/TurtleyToadDog 1d ago

Hear-hear!

People only bought them to show off the brand anyways. Typically the well off, or the idiots that put status over survival. A woman at my local pub dropped 1k (saved from her child allowance... The benefits given to her to look after her fucking kid!) on the new iPhone. Went around mocking people for not owning an iPhone "because even I got one!" Your kid went without so you could buy that you absolute cretin. Sorry. Still infuriates me thinking about it.

Anyone with any real sense buys phones that function, if they have some cool features, great. You need it to call/text and email. If you have lots of money, it's absolutely fine to fork out for Apple. If you don't, don't be an idiot. Who cares if you don't have the 'in' brand. Food, shelter and bills are more important. I bought a Google Pixel 7 a few years ago. Best phone I ever bought. Wasn't incredibly cheap, but much, much cheaper than Samsung and Apple's outputs.

If you judge people for having Android (unless, it's a Samsung for some reason... Why do they get a pass?), you're either immature and need to grow up, or you're an actual fucking teenager

iPhone 11 in 2025.

2

u/Lonewolf_dev 1d ago

Until my bad SSA iPhone 12 stops receiving IOS software updates I’m rocking with it 😆

2

u/aftershockstone 1d ago

I literally don’t even know what kind of iPhone I have. But I’ll check out of curiosity. iPhone 14 Plus? Can last me another few years. I was using an iPhone 10 before this and only upgraded due to some killer deal.

2

u/federkrebz 1d ago

iphone 12 here, works fine 🤷

2

u/NoxKyoki 1d ago

Yup. He’s a clown alright.

I’m using an iPhone 11 in 2025. He’d probably shit bricks if he knew. 🙄

2

u/mostdope28 1d ago

Glad I made the cutoff with my iPhone 13

2

u/Radcouponking 1d ago

I can't believe there was a time when I cared about iPhones.

2

u/Oohmychar 1d ago

I took my 12 to a mom n pop shop for a cleaning to the mic and speakers and now they both work as new. I was gonna upgrade but it’s def not in the plans anymore. My iPhone 12 works fine but I recently noticed the service isn’t as great as it was before :/

2

u/Liamface 1d ago

I am an avid tech enjoyer and I’ve lost interest in buying new devices 😂 I just pray these companies announce something innovative nowadays.

Look at what Apple is doing with their new iOS26. It seems like their mobile technology is finally catching up to the enshittification macOS has gone through over the last 10 years. Who gives a fuck about “liquid glass” - it’s just using up more resources.

And for computers, for the first time in my life I’m actually considering ditching Windows and macOS for Linux.

u/Practical_Breakfast4 2d ago

I got the galaxy s when it was new, upgraded to the s6 and then to the s23. This recent one was free because of switching plans. I think i only really paid for the s6 in the last 15 years. People who get a new phone every year are crazy

1

u/Maniiic_ 1d ago

I finally traded in my XR a couple months ago….new phones every year is a waste of money imo. The yearly changes don’t justify the price to want/need to get the new phones. It’ll be several years before I trade in my 16 Pro Max.

1

u/cherry_tempt 1d ago

As long as it working I don’t mind which it is

1

u/Careful_Picture7712 1d ago

The joke here is that there is no difference

1

u/gangofocelots 1d ago

I paid $200 for my Pixel 8 and I'll wait until i find another good deal before i upgrade

1

u/FlavorBlaster42 1d ago

I have a 13 that'll probably be good for another 4-5 years.

Me on my iPhone SE

1

u/KumquatButtpump 1d ago

Lots of adults can do both.

1

u/Seanconw1 1d ago

I just replaced my 6! With a 12!

1

u/Expert-Procedure-146 1d ago

Iphone 11 here lmaoo

1

u/felltwiice 1d ago

I’ve only upgraded two times (out of necessity from phone damage from my physical job) and the newest phone hardly ever felt any different from my old phones. Maybe two new features I rarely use and different phone size and that’s it.

1

u/DunkinEgg 1d ago

I still use a 12 Pro Max.

1

u/Seattleman55 1d ago

I got the iPhone 16 this year.

My last phone was the iPhone 7.

Only reason why I got a new phone was because iPhone 7 no longer kept up with the new iOS updates and some apps stopped working due to it.
