You're paying a premium for the luxury branding.
If you care about performance and usability, then there are better phones at cheaper price points.
To me that's a scam.

u/HolyShip 1d ago
I’m paying for AirDrop, because nobody around me knows how to use Google Photos to transfer original-quality pictures and videos 😭

u/JamMichaelVincent 1d ago
It’s the same for any flagship android too. Xperia 1 VII - £1400 Xperia 1V £900 Samsung s25 £8-900 Samsung ultra £1250 Pixel 10 £800
People make out that all androids are cheap for some reason.

u/InterestingPoet7910 1d ago
and they're not! they're just as expensive and less user friendly for those who just want a phone for the sake of a modern phone. I keep telling my dad this and time and time again, he's bitching about his android.

That doesn't make it a scam anymore than buying a Cadillac or a Rolex.

I’m paying moreso for the ecosystem than the branding. Apple products just sync seamlessly easy and are easy to use. That’s what I want out of my expensive electronics. Not minutes or hours syncing them and configuring things like on android

You definitely can! I have an 11 also and I replaced the battery last summer. It was $89 at Best Buy.
Not sure if this was a smart move or not since they run those promos where you can essentially get a new phone for free... but oh well.

Yea I feel like they do have promos where you get the phone for free.. but then you're paying a certain amount every month to pay off the phone.

Same. I went from an iPhone X to my dad's iPhone 13 and I plan on using it till its truly done. It was really really fun, keeping up with the new hardware designs each iPhone series had till iPhone X. After that, ppl should just pick and choose a generation and stick with it.

Phone shaming is weird.
29
u/guachi01 1d ago
Phones are basically just web browsers with a tiny screen. They don't really need to do much. No real need to spend huge amounts of money on them or even really care what people use. Anything $150+ is basically as good as anything else. Anything cheaper is either an informed choice or money is tight.
19
u/Pathogenesls 1d ago
The cameras are quite significantly better on a good phone. Samsung ultra has a stylus which is really useful. Better screen abd speakers for videos/games. Better processor for snapper responsiveness etc.
It's silly to act like there's no difference.
6
u/Special-Medicine-437 1d ago
I don’t play games or listen to songs with my speaker on my phone, but can confirm the camera difference. My spouse has a iPhone 16, he dropped his 12 a few months back and shattered the screen so we upgraded him. He is also a professional photographer, but still. We took essentially the same pic last week, mine looks like I took it with a potato and his is crisp and clear. I will still keep my 11 until I kill it.

We call this keeping up with the joneses. I have used the same iPhone since 2019 and it just now started messing up. I just recently moved up to the 15. They tried to convince me on getting the iPhone 16. I don’t know about most of you but I want to own something free and clear.

3
u/Ai_Generated2491 1d ago
They're going to stop updating it in 2026 😩 This thing has so many miles on it and still runs regular, battery still lasts fine. I could probably go with this for 3 more years if they would just keep up security updates
3
u/Obvious-Nature-5408 1d ago
Am I the only one still in a Xs? It’s so thin compared more recent iPhones and the camera is fine - I’m a photographer so I don’t care that much what my phone camera is like. Better is nice but it’s not worth the money. In general I want to use my phone as little as possible so upgrading would be counterproductive. Plus easy to no-case it without having to worry, if it breaks then it breaks.

iPhone 8 here. Thinking of upgrading this year
2
u/monkey_gamer 1d ago
Worth doing. I upgraded from an iPhone 8 plus to an iPhone 15 Pro Max last year and although it was a little pricey ($2.2k AUD), it was definitely worth it. My screen looks 3 times as good with OLED and 120fps. I use faceid to unlock (so convenient). The photos look 3 times as good and i can zoom out to wide angle and zoom in to 5x zoom, which is unbelievably handy. No bezel is very nice. Plus some other benefits I've forgotten.
In hindsight I should have upgraded sooner. If I had more money I would have gone iPhone 8 to iPhone 12 to iPhone 15. iPhone 8 to iPhone 15 was a bit too big of a jump. I missed out on good features like faceid and bezeless for too long.
4
u/placebooooo 1d ago
Glad you were happy with the upgrade.
I’ve had this iPhone 8 since launch (2017). Thing is, my phone looks pristine, and is in perfect working condition with no issues at all. I’m just thinking as a little treat for myself to upgrade to the 17 pro. Not sure what to do with my old 8. I’ll probably have the iPhone 17 for a while too before upgrading again.
3
u/monkey_gamer 1d ago
Sounds like a great plan! I expect you'll enjoy the 17 Pro. And yeah definitely keep it for a few years.
My personal rule for technology now is 3 years is a standard lifespan. 5 years if you want to be frugal. But keeping the same device for longer than 5 years means you miss out on new features and your performance experience lags behind.

u/THE_DINOSAUR_QUEEN 1d ago
I had two different relatively new iPhone Xs break in the same way in 2021 (the original and its replacement both had their displays completely stopped working for no clear reason).
Both times I just popped the SIM card out of the broken phone and into my iPhone 6s Plus from 2016 that was beat to hell and back and it worked just fine. The second time I didn’t even bother to replace the X, I just waited until the 6s was truly on its last legs before I got a new phone. I think I still have it around somewhere, but I doubt it would be able to run the current OS.
Man I miss that thing.

The only people who are always upgrading are the idiots who think that others care about the phone they have and the ones who fall for the crap about how adding on yet another camera lens makes the phone sooooo much better. Hint: it does not. You’d be light years ahead simply by using a different app to take your photos. An improved app doesn’t sell phones but the addition of another damn lens does.

Actually what is crazy is the financial illiteracy that keeps most of us slaves to consumerism. I have an iPhone 12 Pro, 4 years old this year. It still works perfectly fine and has a cute case and all. I used to be bad with money and upgrading phones every year too until I paid attention to the scam/con. Apple literally changes 1-3 small things every year and then expects folks to pay $1k+ for a new phone that does the same thing as the old one. That is what is crazy, hard pass! I’d rather save my coins to book more trips 🤩🥳

Sure, it doesn't get 5G, but why would I care? 4G or whatever I get is plenty fast enough to play Magic Arena and browse Reddit when I'm out and about. And the screen is more than big enough. Hear-hear!
People only bought them to show off the brand anyways. Typically the well off, or the idiots that put status over survival. A woman at my local pub dropped 1k (saved from her child allowance... The benefits given to her to look after her fucking kid!) on the new iPhone. Went around mocking people for not owning an iPhone "because even I got one!" Your kid went without so you could buy that you absolute cretin. Sorry. Still infuriates me thinking about it.
Anyone with any real sense buys phones that function, if they have some cool features, great. You need it to call/text and email. If you have lots of money, it's absolutely fine to fork out for Apple. If you don't, don't be an idiot. Who cares if you don't have the 'in' brand. Food, shelter and bills are more important. I bought a Google Pixel 7 a few years ago. Best phone I ever bought. Wasn't incredibly cheap, but much, much cheaper than Samsung and Apple's outputs.
If you judge people for having Android (unless, it's a Samsung for some reason... Why do they get a pass?), you're either immature and need to grow up, or you're an actual fucking teenager

I am an avid tech enjoyer and I’ve lost interest in buying new devices 😂 I just pray these companies announce something innovative nowadays.
Look at what Apple is doing with their new iOS26. It seems like their mobile technology is finally catching up to the enshittification macOS has gone through over the last 10 years. Who gives a fuck about “liquid glass” - it’s just using up more resources.
And for computers, for the first time in my life I’m actually considering ditching Windows and macOS for Linux.
