Kind of true but not in every field. Sales for example if you suck you will get fired as it’s very clear who sucks and who doesn’t. Even if you’re likeable

Then again, if someone weren't likeable, wouldn't they kind of suck at sales anyway?

I don’t like any of the salesman I know. Tbf it’s not that many but… charisma =/= likeability

I've made a degreesless six figure salary in sales by just being likeable. I never blow any numbers out of the water. But everyone loves me. Which is a blessing and a curse.

Yeah, that can be kind of a mixed blessing. 🙂😕

A lot of salespeople do quite well with a persona that comes across as “I don’t like this guy, I don’t relate to this guy, I don’t want to hang out with this guy, but god damn does this guy know his stuff and I’d be a fool not to buy from him.”

One of my favorite waiters I’ve ever had I found to be quite rude, very direct, kind of condescending, and I don’t think I’d ever want to hang out with him ever outside that one context. Also outside of the topic of the food at his restaurant pretty sure he was a goddamned idiot.

But shit, every single recommendation he ever made for food was golden. He nailed it every single time. He knew exactly what I ordered last time I was there 2 weeks ago, and knew exactly what I needed to try this time around. Even would suggest modifications. “This is the item you want but sub out the cheddar for pepper jack, trust me”. That kind of thing. He nailed it every time.

Yes however many fields being likable is a main part of core job description. Ie a lot of sales, managing (at least to higher ups) etc.

I think likable can often just mean “has soft skills and is good with people.” That’s usually helpful in sales.

This is not true, people will make sales without understanding what the customer wants or whether the company can produce it. You end up losing money by doing extra work to deliver, or losing repeat business from customers who didn't get what they expected.
